Missouri State University Undergraduate Admission Policy

Freshman Admission PolicyIf you are 22 years of age or younger, you will qualify for admission to Missouri State if you are (or will be) a high school graduate of an accredited high school and meet both the core-curriculum and selection-index requirements described below. If you have completed courses for college credit, you must also have at least a 2.00 grade point average on those courses. This policy also applies to home-schooled students. If you have or will have a GED, please contact the Office of Admissions for admission requirements.

Nontraditional Freshman Admission PolicyIf you are 22 years of age or older and have not attempted college credit after high school, you will qualify for admission once you have submitted an official high school transcript showing proof of graduation or a GED transcript showing test scores.

CoreCurriculumThe following high school core curriculum was established by the Missouri Department of Higher Education and is required of all students.

English: Four units, two of which must emphasize composition or writing. One unit may be speech or debate. Mathematics: Three units (algebra I or higher, to include algebra II). If algebra I is taken in eighth grade, three acceptable units of math must be completed in high school. SocialStudies: Three units (must include American history and at least one semester of government). Personal finance is NOT acceptable. Science: Three units, not including general science. One unit must be a laboratory course. VisualandPerformingArts: One unit (graduates of accredited Missouri high schools meet this through completion of the fine arts requirement for graduation). AcademicElectives: Three additional units of core electives selected from any combination of two or more of the above subject areas and/or foreign language. Computer science may also be used if it has a prerequisite of algebra I or higher. AdditionalElectives: Must bring total to 24 units (required of Missouri high school graduates. Missouri high school graduates must have one unit each of practical arts and physical education and one-half unit each of health education and personal finance).

For additional details and a list of acceptable courses, please contact your high school counselor or the Missouri State Office of Admissions or visit www.missouristate.edu/admissions/admpolicy.htm.

SelectionIndex If you meet the requirement for core curriculum, you will automatically qualify for admission if you meet the following scale. This scale is based on a selection index (sum of class-rank percentile and ACT percentile) of 108. To use this scale, you must know your high school class-rank percentile and/or your grade point average on a 4.00 scale, as well as your ACT composite score or SAT total (critical reading and math). Tocalculateyourclass-rankpercentile: Subtract your rank in class from the number of students in your class, then divide that number by the number of students in your class. For example, if you are ranked 24 in your class of 200, your class rank percentile is 88 [(200 - 24) ÷ 200 = 0.88 or 88th percentile]. Ifyourschooldoesnotgradeona4.00scale: Convert your GPA to a 4.00 equivalent by multiplying your GPA by four and dividing that number by the scale your school uses. For example, if you have a 10.50 GPA on a 12.00 scale, your converted GPA equivalent is 3.50 [(10.50 x 4) ÷ 12 = 3.50].

FreshmanAdmissionAlternativesAs a selective-admission institution, our objective is to admit students with demonstrated potential for academic success. We recognize that some students have potential for success not clearly evident through standard measures of class rank, grade point average and test scores. If you donotmeettherequirementslistedabove, please visit www.missouristate.edu/admissions/admissionalternatives.htm for information on our individual review option and other options available to you. Some of these options have additional deadlines. Missouri high school graduates who have completed the core curriculum but who do not meet the selection index requirement may be admitted for the summer session (beginning in early June) without going through the individual review option.

The Missouri State University system includes an openadmission campus in West Plains (about 100 miles southeast of Springfield). Students who do not qualify for admission to the Springfield campus may begin at the West Plains campus, which offers programs that enable students to transfer seamlessly to Springfield. For information on the West Plains campus, please visit www.wp.missouristate.edu or call 417-255-7955.

Transfer Admission PolicyYou will qualify for admission to Missouri State if you have completed 24 or more hours of transferable college credit after graduation from high school and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher. If you will have fewer than 24 hours of college credit, you must also meet the freshman admission requirements.

The University reserves the right to limit enrollment and to admit students on a space-available basis. Students are encouraged to apply early.

If you have any questions, please call the Office of Admissions at 417-836-5517 or 800-492-7900, access our website at www.missouristate.eduor write to: OfficeofAdmissions,MissouriStateUniversity,901S.NationalAve.,Springfield,MO65897.

STEP1: Using your class rank percentile and GPA, determine which will place you higher on this scale. For example, if your class rank percentile is 60 and your GPA is 3.30, you would use the line based on your GPA. If your school does not rank, your GPA will be used to determine your eligibility.

STEP2: Follow the line you identified in Step 1 across the scale to determine the minimum ACT or SAT score you must have. Using the same example from Step 1, a student with a class rank percentile of 60 and a GPA of 3.30 would need either an ACT composite of 19 or higher or an SAT total of 910 or higher.

Academic Majors and ProgramsListed below are the academic majors available at Missouri State University. Within some majors, areas of specialization (e.g., areas of emphasis, options, concentrations) are required. Please write your intended major and area of specialization (if known) in item 21. If you are like many students, you may still be deciding on your academic major. If so, please check the “undecided” box in item 21. Missouri State offers a number of resources and services to help students select a major.

Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to specific majors. Certain majors, such as business, communication, mass media, nursing, sports medicine and athletic training and teacher education, have specific admission requirements. For specific major requirements, please refer to the current Missouri State Undergraduate Catalog available online at www.missouristate.edu/catalog/.

Checklist for New StudentsAdmissionFreshmenm Take the ACT or SAT early. (We recommend taking the ACT test in April of your junior year.) If you take these tests more than once, we will use your

highest test score to determine your eligibility for admission.m We encourage you to apply for admission to Missouri State early in your senior year if possible. Please refer to semester application deadlines in the

instruction section in the Application Procedures found on page 2. m If you are still in high school: To expedite the admission process, we encourage you to take your completed application and application

fee to your counselor and request that they be mailed with your transcript. If your counselor prefers, however, you may send the application and fee separately.

Transfer Studentsm You may apply up to one year in advance if, at the time of application, you have already completed 24 or more hours of transferable credit with

at least a 2.00 grade point average. m Please ask the registrar at each college or university you have attended to send your official transcript directly to the Missouri State Office of

Admissions. If you are currently enrolled, please request that a current transcript be sent at the time of application. You also will need to have a final transcript sent upon completion of your coursework.

m If you have completed fewer than 24 hours of transferable credit at the time of application: Please request that your high school send your final transcript showing your graduation date, final class rank and grade point average.

m With your admission letter, you will receive an evaluation showing how your previous courses transfer to Missouri State.

All Studentsm A $35 nonrefundable application fee is required for all first-time applicants.m A transcript request form is available on our website at www.missouristate.edu/admissions/transcriptrequest.htm. m Once we have all of the items listed above, you should hear from us within three weeks. Please be sure to request needed information in a timely

fashion. You may check the status of your application online at www.missouristate.edu by following the path for “future students.” m After you are admitted, you will receive a brochure called Frequently Asked Questions. This will provide you with answers to the questions our incoming students ask the most. Topics include financial aid, housing, registration, fee payment, transfer credit, student employment, registering

your car and more.

Financial Aidm To be considered for federal financial aid, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This form is available from your

high school counselor or any college or university financial aid office, and it also is available on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. To receive full consideration, submit the FAFSA in time for it to be received by the financial aid processor no later than March 31. If you apply after March 31, you will still be considered for many of the basic aid programs (e.g. Stafford loans and Pell grants); however, there will be certain programs (e.g. college work study and Perkins loans) for which you will not be considered. The Missouri State FAFSA school code number is 002503.

m Missouri State offers a number of scholarships. Most of our scholarships for freshmen are granted on the basis of high school class rank or grade point average and performance on the ACT or SAT. Some departments have specialized scholarships. Scholarships for transfer students are also available.m Our website at www.missouristate.edu/financialaid contains extensive information about federal and state financial aid programs and our

scholarship program.

Residence Life (Housing)m Shortly after you are admitted, you should receive information from the Department of Residence Life and Services about the residence halls and

apartments on campus and about the housing application process. m Your priority date for determining the building to which you will be assigned is the date of your admission to Missouri State. The earlier you are

admitted, the more options you will have when the Department of Residence Life and Services begins to make building assignments.

Orientation and Registrationm Following your admission, you will receive information regarding orientation and registration opportunities for new students. If you are a freshman,

you will receive an invitation to participate in a Student Orientation, Advisement and Registration program, also known as SOAR. SOAR programs for the fall semester are scheduled for June, July and August. SOAR programs for the spring and summer semesters are held just prior to the opening of the semester. If you are a transfer student, you will receive information on special registration options available for your semester of admission.

Campus Visitsm We welcome you to visit our campus. Please call the Office of Admissions at 800-492-7900 or 417-836-6614 (a direct line to our campus-visit desk), or

go online to www.missouristate.edu/visit/, and we will be glad to arrange your visit, including an escorted campus tour and appointments with faculty and admissions staff. We encourage you to call or set your appointment online 10 to 14 days in advance of your visit if possible. You may also take a virtual tour of campus at www.missouristate.edu/tour/.
