Circular economy and efficiency: the watchwords for Pollutec 2018

The 40-year milestone may sometimes be a little hard to swallow for human beings, but it nonetheless remains an age that combines maturity and dynamism. The prime of life, they say. The same goes for Pollutec, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, showing the way and driving the market at an accelerated pace towards a voluntary and pragmatic ecological transition, coupling dynamism and creativity with greater maturity in its approaches. The 2018 event is thus primarily driven by two movements: a broad definition of the concept of circular economy (across all sectors) and a wide panoply of technologies to assist in a shift towards efficient processes and effective working methods. In other words, following on from previous years, Pollutec continues its transformation into a trade show of practical solutions and organisational thinking, with a greater focus on optimised resource management, leveraging solutions that help us consume less and better (efficiency) and to develop a collaborative systemic vision promoting circular transactions, not to mention the use of technologies and techniques to maintain existing resources (a vital prerequisite) and health.

First International Summit for Cities and Regions committed to the circular economy

Cities are responsible for 75% of natural resources consumption, 50% of global waste production and 70% of greenhouse gases. This means they have a leading role to play in encouraging and supporting the circular economy in the full sense of the word, in other words in optimising resource use and reducing the environmental impacts. But moving towards the circular economy involves rethinking the ways we design, produce and consume. How are cities and regions doing this concretely and what are the results? What are the priorities according to the country or the region of the world concerned? What initiatives can be replicated? This is the whole purpose of this international summit for cities and regions organised by Pollutec and the Métropole de Lyon on Wednesday 28 November.

Also to be noted: visits to four exemplary sites in the region (Carré de Soie, Quartier Saint Jean, Parc Blandant and Vallée de la

Chimie) are proposed the day before (27 November) for international participants at the Summit.

Digital technologies and Environment Artificial intelligence, data processing, ITC, blockchain, cyber-security, collaborative tools, virtual or augmented reality, etc. The whole range of digital technologies is increasingly present in solutions dedicated to the environment or climate. As well as the energy efficiency sector, all green growth sectors are concerned and this is demonstrated by the innovations that the exhibitors have declared. Digital technology plays an integral role in the water sector, notably in the management of networks and instrumentation. It is also increasingly present in the air sector both in metrology devices and in the treatment systems. Finally, it is omnipresent in the waste sector (collection, recycling, sorting), in site and soil management and in risk prevention. The two interdisciplinary focus events at Pollutec - sustainable cities and sustainable industry - are also affected, with intelligence and connected integrated at all levels (e.g.: urban mobility, process efficiency, etc.). Eco-innovation more than ever promotedIn this anniversary year, Pollutec is more than ever confirming its place as the world capital of environmental innovation. Pollutec is the only event to focus over four days on so many technologies, organisational methods, emerging themes and new approaches in all sectors of the environment. To highlight this innovating dynamic, the organisers are further strengthening the event with new dedicated spaces, sustained promotion of start-ups and the extension of the Innovation Showcase in partnership with PEXE. This means some 200 innovations will be presented during the 2018 edition.

As always, innovation is present across the entire exhibition area: on individual stands and in collective pavilions (regional and international). Of the 156 innovating solutions validated and published on the Pollutec site on 31 October, many concern the traditional sectors of the trade show: water, waste, recovery, air, energy, energy efficiency, soils, risks and Instrumentation - Metrology – Analysis. But others also reveal new developments. For example, certain innovations relate to the circular economy in its broad sense (extending the life of equipment, closed-circuit water system).

Another solution concerns taking into account climate change in the construction industry. Others are inspired by the sustainable industry movement (e.g.: optimisation of production processes, simplification of exchanges within the company, knowledge transfer strategy).

Plastics themePolyolefins, polyvinyl, polystyrenes, polyamides, cellulosics, polyesters, polyurethanes, etc.: these few sub families of plastics - amongst the twenty or so distributed in two main families: thermoplastics and thermosetting resins – show the extent to which plastic is part of our lives, over and beyond packagings and single-use products. Driven in particular by automobile manufacturing and electrical and electronic equipment, the sector recorded growth of 3.9% worldwide in 2017, with 348 million tonnes produced. While we cannot deny the services that plastic has provided since its creation, we must acknowledge the extent of its impact on the environment: the crucial issue of plastic waste in the marine environment, limited use of recycled plastic (not above 7% in Europe), etc.

The organisers of Pollutec decided to highlight this theme more particularly, with the idea of showing the ambitions and actions of the stakeholders - public, private or civil society - in these sectors. The theme will therefore be addressed by a panel of experts and professionals, a real asset at a time rife with conflicting arguments and information hype not always verified.

The Sea and Coast themeThe long-ignored pressures on the sea and coastline are considerable: pressure on natural resources, direct discharging into the sea, environmental degradation, etc. Water quality, habitat integrity and diversity are heavily impacted by land-based pollution (agriculture, industry, waste water, etc.) conveyed by watersheds and rivers. Even though the concentration of certain pollutants is decreasing (lindane, DDT, lead, etc.), the concentration of other molecules is extremely worrying (flame retardants, residues of medicinal products, etc.), as well as the major problem of plastics. At the same time, the microbiological quality of coastal waters is stagnating and algal proliferation increasing. Finally, the coastline is a combination of major challenges (population, assets) and many technological or natural hazards, some of which, such as erosion or marine flooding, are exacerbated by the rise in the sea level due to climate change.

For several years now, Pollutec has, in its different sectors, been presenting solutions to meet the challenges of the sea and coast: solutions for tomorrow’s ships (electric or hydrogen motorisations, anti-fouling paint, etc.), installations for dismantling ships, ballast water or waste treatment systems, solutions related to port activities (sediment treatment, etc.), renewable marine energies (offshore wind turbines, hydro turbines, etc.), marine biotechnologies and risk management systems (prevention of coastal erosion, accidental pollution treatment). Through the Sea and Coast focus, Pollutec will be highlighting all these issues, the actions that need to be taken upstream to limit the impacts and the solutions that already exist. The Sea and Coast Forum has a rich programme of conferences. Finally, note also Océans Plastifiés, an interesting exhibition presented by the Expédition MED association (stand 4-K136).

Employment theme at Pollutec 2018Mirroring the development of the environmental sectors over the last four decades, Pollutec, very early on, set up a Space dedicated to Employment and Skills within these sectors. It is true that, over and beyond the creation of new jobs, ecological and energy transition is active in developing existing activities and jobs. Indeed, the new production or construction methods that are being implemented are increasingly moving towards reducing the use of natural resources, limiting the impacts, recycling, and so on, not to mention the very significant contribution of digital technology in all the activities. In 2017, one recruitment project in seven concerned the green economy and no fewer than 560,400 job offers were posted in this sector, regardless of the activity. In addition to the Employment Space which, in partnership with Kandra and as is the case each year, will feature throughout the event, Pollutec 2018 is innovating and proposing an Employment Day on 30 November.

THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER JOBSEmployment.figures.for.the.green.economy.vary.significantly.depending.on.the.angle.of.perspective..In.2016.there.were.

456,050.jobs.in.eco-activities.and.almost.the.same.number.in.the.peripheral.activities,.for.a.grand.total.of.900,000..But.

the.scale.is.totally.different.when.discussing.“activities”.because.nearly.4.million.people.have.an.activity.associated.with.

the.environment..In.this.context,.another.interesting.and.concrete.approach.is.the.analysis.of.the.published.job.offers..

A.study.conducted.by.Adzuna.at.the.end.of.2016.on.offers.available.on.its.site.revealed.that.the.most.sought-after.jobs.

were.primarily.in.water.treatment.(more.than.one.in.five),.risk.prevention,.energy.efficiency.in.buildings/eco-construction,.

production.and.distribution.of.renewable.energies,.waste.treatment,.protection/maintenance.of.green.spaces.and,.more.

recently,.activities.in.the.production.and.distribution.of.biological.products..Nearly.one.quarter.of.these.“green.jobs”.are.
