Medicinal GardenIn collaboration with the D’Youville School of Pharmacy and Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, part of Catholic Health, is pleased to announce the creation of a Medicinal Garden. Our Medicinal Garden will provide visitors with a better understanding of the importance of medicinal plants, how they are used in traditional, herbal and modern medicines and further strengthen their awareness of the interdependence between

humans and plants. Future plans for this display include its expansion to a more extensive Outdoor Medicinal Garden on the Gardens’ grounds. Check our schedule for upcoming Medicinal Garden features...

Thank you Mary Ann and Maria! I want to express the appreciation of the entire Botanical Gardens Community to Mary Ann Kresse and Maria Lehman. As board members for many years and Botanical Gardens supporters for life, Mary Ann and Maria will be missed as their terms came to an end in 2011.

Mary Ann Kresse, as a member of the task force to create the public-private partnership between the Society and Erie County, a Board Member and as Board Chair, she has been the guiding light and inspiration behind the growth of the Botanical Gardens for well over ten years. We thank her and know that she will continue to be a valuable asset and resource in the years ahead.

Maria Lehman, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors and former Erie County Commissioner of Public Works was also instrumental in creating the public-private partnership between the Botanical Gardens Society and Erie County in 2004.

Because of Mary Ann and Maria’s efforts and dedication, the Society has become a thriving business and a memorable place to visit! Thank you!

A Message from Mary Ann Kresse, Board Chairman 2009-2011As we welcome and begin 2012 in the brightly blooming Botanical Gardens, we should look back from this vantage point to the progress and “growth” of 2011 - we have come such a long way. Truly, it is the dedication and hard work of staff, Board of Directors and volunteers, and the commitment of support of members, corporations and visitors, who have brought about such success and sustainability. Marking new administrative leadership with the hiring of David Swarts, President & CEO, late in the first month of the year, this assembled team moved through 2011 with advances in exhibits and shows, programs and education, collection and garden maintenance and enhancement, physical improvements and fiscal good health. Erie County completed the new Administrative Building and we took occupancy with an eager new function. Introduction NIGHT LIGHTS in February, dedication of the Arcangel Gallery, successful events and shows in the Main Dome, and throughout the Houses, interior and outside Gardens, drew large numbers of visitors and crowds, marking a record admissions of nearly 90,000 for the year! Last Fall’s dedication of the Medicinal Garden initiated a new collaboration with D’Youville College and Buffalo Mercy Hospital; work has also begun on our indoor Wegmans’ Children’s Garden. Another successful year of bringing Buffalo Public and Charter School students to learn and grow in horticultural pursuits took place because of generous support of HSBC Bank. Initiatives have begun with both the University of Buffalo Schools of Architecture and that of Computer Sciences focusing on preliminary design projection of our Master Plan proposed events building, the “Orangerie”, and the automation of our total collection records and descriptions, respectively. Our Board and staff are following the strategic plan approved in 2010, reviewed and adjusted in the Fall, and we will soon begin to actively seek accreditation by the Association of American Museums. So we move on, preserving and progressing this treasured facility, fulfilling and promoting its mission, enhancing and providing for all the beauty and operation of the Gardens. More has yet to be accomplished but with the momentum established, we will propel to new goals. Adding my personal note, since my term and the privilege of having served as Chairman of the Society has expired, I thank you all for your great work and support in making all of the above a reality. I leave you a great team and officers, a Board of able and skilled stewards, to carry on, and I wish them, and you, continued and growing success in this important endeavor of the Botanical Gardens.

David Swarts, President & CEO

Docents Needed!Would you like free admission for an entire year to the twelve largest culturals in Buffalo? It’s easy…Just give one year of service (36 hours) to the Education Department at the Botanical Gardens by becoming a trained educator and docent. You don’t need public speaking skills or teaching experience, just a love of the Gardens and of sharing botanical and historical information.

Best of all, you make the decision on what tours you’d like to give or what lessons you’d like to teach. There are many areas from which to choose. We have both adult and student programs and tours that range in length from 20 minutes to an hour.

Of course, we will train you completely and you will be able to shadow under a veteran docent who will not let you “go it alone” until you decide that you are ready. Call 827.1584 ext. 291 to get started.
