I write this foreword after just returninghome from receiving our latest award, fromConde Nast Traveler USA’s 2010 WorldSavers Awards, where we won the overall“Doing It All“ category. This marks animportant milestone for Banyan Tree – wehave just crossed the line of 600 awardsand accolades.

In the 15 years since we rst opened ourdoors at Banyan Tree Phuket, this represents

an average of 40 awards per year. Whether itbe for our resorts, our spas, our commitmentto CSR or other reasons, we have consideredinternational awards to be the most impartialvalidation of our quality and our continuingvalue to our stakeholders.

And so, on this important milestone, let methank all our readers for having helped intheir own ways, to enable us to achieve thismilestone and to aim for higher goals.

Our goals of course, are not just in countingour awards. Our goal is, as I have put it on

many occasions, to “string a necklace ofresorts around the world”. And of course, tomaintain our reputation for quality service,a strong sense of place, and a culture ofcamaraderie, wherever we go.

And we are going to many new placesindeed. In the past few months we justopened three iconic hotels: at China’s secondlargest freshwater lake, the Angsana FuxianLake Resort; at a secluded bay in Thailand’s

Koh Samui, the Banyan Tree Samui; and inSeoul’s historic Mt. Namsan, the BanyanTree Club and Spa, Seoul.

Next year we will open 7 hotels. Four Angsanaresorts: in Hangzhou, Abu Dhabi; Phuket, and Mauritius. And 3 Banyan Tree hotels:in Kerala, in Macau, and Shanghai.

And in 2012 a further dozen hotels willopen. That will bring us to around 50 hotelsand close to 100 spas. The necklace with its

shining jewels will be closer to completion, but it will be an unending task…

Throughout this journey – through the perilsof the Asian tsunami, global recession andthe Thai political crisis, and the promisesof a better tomorrow whenever I meet ouryoung and earnest new associates – I amhumbled by the knowledge that my fellowtravellers, whether guests or associates orother stakeholders, feel a sense of ownershipand protectiveness about the brand whichis borne from an almost erce pride thatthe vision which is Banyan Tree, remains as

pure and unadorned as when my wife andI some thirty years ago, as impoverished

journalist and graduate student, settled intoa little shing village off the coast of HongKong, named…. Banyan Tree Bay. And fromthose simple but idyllic years, the seed ofthe Banyan Tree dream was sown.

ARABIAN SANDS

ADVENTUREThere’s so much more to the United Arab Emirates than the ultramodern cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Travel writer Nick Smithvisits Ras Al Khaimah where the new Banyan Tree Al Wadi resort provides a desert eco-adventure of a lifetime

FEATURE STORY

It’s only a few hours after dawn and the Arabiansun is already beating ercely onto the desertsand. I’m standing on the leeward slope of anapricot-coloured dune in the Banyan Tree AlWadi nature reserve, gesturing to my fellowwildlife enthusiasts where the monitor lizardwent. As I point through the desert scrub,Ryan Ingram, the nature reserve’s manager, leaps before me. “I’ve found the trail,” hesays excitedly. And there in the sand is along wavy line created by the reptile’s tail, leading away into the distance.

As we follow the lizard over the baking sand,Ryan takes us to the crest of a dune wherewe see other tracks of snakes, rodents, birdsand insects. “It’s been a busy night up here,”says Ryan, reading the telltale signs like abook. After sunset, when the desert canbe surprisingly cold, all manner of animalnightlife emerges from their burrows to begintheir nocturnal search for food.

But this morning there’s a different castof characters for us to meet. There are thebrilliantly coloured green bee-eaters and thelilac-breasted rollers. There’s a small herd ofshy Arabian Oryx that shares the dunes withthe more gregarious and plentiful Reem andThomson’s gazelles. On the road that leadsthrough the 60-hectare nature reserve toBanyan Tree Al Wadi resort, camels are inthe habit of stepping out in front of you, soyou have to be careful how you navigatethe buggy.

It’s hard to imagine that such an amazingeco-adventure could be happening so closeto the burgeoning 21st century metropolis ofDubai. We’re only 45 minutes away from theairport, but worlds away in the mysteriousdesert that sits between the Arabian Gulf andthe Al Hajjar mountains.

But it’s not just desert. The region is hometo date farms, ancient forts and settlements, shing ports and watch towers. And in amongstthe traditional and the historic in the Ras AlKhaimah region there is the groundbreakingnature reserve – literally surrounding BanyanTree Al Wadi – where our adventure is takingplace. And although Banyan Tree Al Wadi isthe rst luxury desert resort in the Unit ed ArabEmirates to offer an all-pool villa concept, complete with Asian-inspired hydrotherapyspa facilities, what I’m really here for are theunique experiences that Ryan and his teamhave created for the desert adventurer.

In this part of the world birds of prey areintegral to the culture, used for ve millenniaas hunting birds, but today much more fordisplay. At Al Wadi there’s the opportunity totake part in an interactive falconry activity. And as the heat drains out of the afternoonsun, we head for the special building or‘mews’ where the owls, kestrels, falconsand even an eagle are kept safe from thedesert sun.

These birds are perhaps the most importantguests at Banyan Tree Al Wadi and they’retreated like the regal creatures they are. Theirmews is an immaculate haven where thebirds roost at night, while their ‘weathering’

or outdoor quarters is where they rest byday in between being own. But before we

can take the birds out there’s a lot for us tolearn. Our instructor is Jannes Kruger, thefalconry manager, is a man completely atone with his birds, who takes their welfareand training so seriously it’s infectious. Hetells us the elements of falconry managementand husbandry, as well as other factors youneed to consider before selecting the speciesyou wish to y. “Eagles,” he tells us, “are notsuitable for beginners.”

Falconry is a serious art and there’s a vastarray of equipment to master, knots to belearned and principles of hygiene, diseaseand nutrition to be understood. It’s almosttoo much to take in, but it’s worth it becauseonce the lecture is over we move outsideto the crest of a dune overlooking a vastexpanse of desert.

At sunset the adventure begins. For us novicesit’s the lighter and smaller birds that we’regoing to train with. One by one we put onour leather gloves, the hoods come off thebird that’s about to y and they take to theair. Each bird in turn circulates in front of thedune and, attracted by a piece of raw meatplaced on the glove, they come in to land.As the bird grips the glove with its talonsyou can feel their power and you can onlyimagine what it’s like to have a golden eagle

with a 2-metre wingspan, and weighing asmuch as 7kg, land on you.

After the excitement of the falconry displaywe enjoy a traditional outdoor Arabian mealgrilled on a charcoal oven. Sitting by thelovely Saffron Tower that was inspired bythe ancient architecture of the desert people,we watch the stars and listen to the soundsof the desert.

FEATURE STORY 7

ARABIAN OASISOF INDULGENCE

Banyan Tree Al Wadi blends seamlesslywith its desert surrounds through

design, presenting a contemporary yetsubtle adaptation of traditional Ras AlKhaimah architecture. Taking inspirationfrom the emirate’s old pearl tradervillages and watch towers, elementswere incorporated to provide guests witha sense of place.

Go “glamping”, short for “glamorouscamping”. Stay in one of the 31 tentedpool villas in the desert or choose from the 32 newly opened beach villas by theArabian Gulf. Inspired by the nomadic lifestyle of the Bedouin, these tented poolvillas offer a sensual retreat amid this exotic locale. Alternatively, try the Al RimalDeluxe Pool Villas in the desert plains, a luxurious rendition of traditional mud-brick housing in Ras Al Khaimah.

The personal innity edge swimming pool in each villa is built with deepblue mosaic tiles to represent an oasis of water. Elements of typical regional

architecture such as Arabesque light ttings and lattice woodwork were alsoincorporated to For complete indulgence, visit the 3,000sqm Banyan Tree Spa andThe Rainforest hydrothermal wellness circuit for its extensive selection of Asian-inspired treatments.

About Nick SmithBased in London, Nick Smith has travelled extensively in Africa and the MiddleEast in his search for the haunting desert landscapes that inspire him. Seldomseen without his trusty Canon cameras, he has been contributing regularly to theDaily Telegraph, the Explorers Journal and a host of travel magazines for the pastdecade. His latest book – Travels in the World of Books – was published in May.

The following day we rose early and took a tripto a local date farm. Authentic and traditionalin every detail, the harvest is brought in usinga rope harness to climb the trees. Althoughwe might think of the UAE as the last wordin ultra modern chic, at this farm at least, date production is done the old-fashionedway. The elderly farmer tending to his datetrees is the brother of the old sheikh. He’sactually wealthy and owns several palaces, but every day he gets up, immerses himselfin the old ways of the agrarian folk of hiscountry, before returning to his palace atnight. This is date farming at its most labourintensive and so we’re surprised to hear thatwhen the harvest is in, the old man feeds hiscrop to his camels. This is because he hasno commercial need for them. He just loveswhat he does.

But the UAE is a fast developing countryand the date farmer’s sons prefer the modernlifestyle to their indigenous pastoral heritage. And so it’s likely that when the old man canno longer manage his farm then it too willbecome a thing of the past. He showed us theoriginal buildings that have been abandoned, but it would be of benet to all visitors tothe UAE if the farm were to be restored andpreserved as a record of how the peopleof the region lived before the arrival of thedigital age. Of all the sites we were taken tothis was the one where the sheer nostalgiaof it blew us away.

Some of the main features of Ras al Khaimah’srich archeological legacy are the old forts andwatch towers scattered along its coastline. Themost important is Dhayah Fort located northof Al Rams, an hour’s drive from Al Wadi.We were taken there by a knowledgeableguide who described for us the pre-historyof the region, a very fertile agriculturalstretch of reclaimed land. As we gaze over

the patchwork of lush palm gardens, olive

groves and citrus fruit orchards we discoverthat this land has been settled since at leastthe third millennium BC.

Records show that today’s fort was reconstructedduring the 19th Century on the foundationsof much older structures. It’s the only hilltopfort still in the UAE and on climbing to thetop, we stood watching the sun set over theshimmering Gulf surrounded by goats clingingto the steep mountain sides, listening to themuezzin calling the faithful to prayer. As thesemystical sounds of Islam lled the echoingvalley it was easy to reect on how muchdeep culture there is in a country so oftenthought of as being simply a retail therapyoutlet for today’s consumerist travellers.

Much less ancient is a hill fort above thevillage of Shimal, known as “Sheba’s Palace”.Despite its name the citadel has little to dowith the middle eastern biblical queen, whodied more than 2,000 years before it was built. But her reputation was so widespread thather inuence is to be found everywhere inArabia from Yemen to Egypt. As we climbedthe stone staircase we made our way to theonly known Islamic palace in the UAE,which dates back to the days of Julfar, themost famous and prosperous trading townin the whole lower Gulf.

After all this unexpected history i t seems ashame to get back into the air-conditionedworld of our 4-wheel drive. But we make ourway back to Al Wadi pleased to have beengiven this privileged insight into a countrythat’s so ancient and modern at the sametime. As we looked forward to our eveningcocktails on the rooftop Moon Bar and ourThai dinner at Al Wadi’s Saffron restaurant,it was time to reect on a desert and culturaladventure that so few know about and thatawaits so many.

As Banyan Tree expands its global presencedelivering the quintessential experience thatguests have come to expect and seek out, thecompany is actively seeking to achieve greaterefciencies in delivering the comfort and

depth of experience for guests while remainingaligned with Banyan Tree’s founding values.Banyan Tree remains committed to being anagent of social and economic developmentin developing areas while safeguarding theecosystems where it has a presence.

Firstly, hotels are encouraged to implementone initiative each year that helps to conserveresources. This could be a best practice suchas replacing incandescent bulbs with compactuorescent bulbs or LED (light-emitting

diodes) lighting that is more energy-efcient,or reusing grey water for landscape irrigation.Innovative actions such as harnessing solarenergy, tapping into the waste heat energy(a by-product of air conditioning to heatwater), and collaborating with local schoolsto champion and test new approaches, havealso been instrumental towards achievingthis goal.

Additionally, environmental benchmarking andcertication by the internationally acclaimedEarthCheck system provided by EC3 Globalwas implemented in 2007 at Banyan TreeLijiang in China. The EarthCheck system wasselected as the external resource due to itsrigorous and thorough approach as well asfor its reliance upon background research insustainable tourism under the expertise of the

Sustainable Tourism Cooperative ResearchCentre. Banyan Tree Lijiang rst achievedSilver Certied status in 2008 and has beenworking to maintain that certication levelsince. On the basis of Banyan Tree Lijiang’s

test of EarthCheck, the company rolled out thesustainability benchmarking and certicationsystem across the group, with 13 properties

joining for Phase 1 of EarthCheck in 2010.

In 2007, Banyan Tree launched two CSRinitiatives - Greening Communities andSeedlings, to reinforce its commitment tosupport the social and natural environments,in line with its philosophy of “embracing theenvironment, empowering people”.

Intended to raise awareness of climatechange, Greening Communities challengesproperties to plant 2,000 trees per year. Whiletrees are one of nature’s key land-basedmeans to absorb, store, and process excessatmospheric carbon dioxide (one of the maincontributors to climate change), the primaryobjective is to engage local communities, hotel associates and guests through plantingtrees, thus passing along the message of thecauses of climate change and what eachperson can do to reduce it.

In the rst year, Greening Communitieswas implemented across eight Banyan Treeand Angsana hotels in Thailand, Indonesia, the Maldives, Seychelles, China, Laos, andAustralia, as well as the corporate head ofcein Singapore. This was followed by ve new

resort additions over the next two years, withmore destinations to be included as the Groupexpands its global presence. As of 2009,over 51,053 trees were planted worldwidethrough Greening Communities.

Seedlings is the group-wide communitydevelopment programme, in which youthsbetween the ages of 12 and 18 and consideredat risk of societal exclusion are given theappropriate support and opportunities overthe three stages of mentorship, scholarship, and optional internship. The aim is to provideyoung people with the motivation and meansto complete their education and successfullyenter the labour force as adults.

Selected Banyan Tree associates undergotraining implemented by the University ofWales to enable them to effectively mentoryouths under their guidance. Scholarshipscover school fees and other schooling expensesand are offered to youths who cannot affordto continue their education. The nal optionalstage is for a hotel-based internship to enablethe young adult to gather the work experienceneeded to secure future jobs within theirselected area of expertise.

Since its launch in 2008, the seven resortsparticipating in Seedlings have workedclosely with over 50 children. Due to theencouraging success of the programme, BanyanTree continues to expand the initiative, withmore children anticipated to be included inthe coming years.

AboutBanyan TreeBintanConservationLabThe Banyan Tree Bintan Conservation Lab wascreated to provide basic research facilitiesfor visiting experts and to drive awarenessfor conservation among guests and localcommunities. Since its founding in 2007,

the Lab has collaborated with regionaland international experts to host numerousresearch programmes. These include surveyson reptiles, amphibians, corals, birds, andbutteries, as well as a study on the AsianBox Turtle. The team also works closelywith the National University of Singaporefor ongoing ecosystem monitoring. BanyanTree Bintan Conservation Lab was awarded aPATA Gold Award in 2008 in the EcotourismProject category by the Pacic Asia TravelAssociation (PATA).

In May 2010, a hawksbill turtle nested on abeach near Banyan Tree Bintan in Indonesia, producing three sets of eggs and over 300baby turtles.

Due to threats of being consumed by predatorsor collected and sold for food, the eggs werecarefully moved to the safety of a protectedhatchery. Trained conservation ofcers fromBanyan Tree Bintan Conservation Lab assistedin this joint effort with the other hotels in

the area. The three batches of eggs hatchedon separate occasions between June and July. Guests, villagers, school children, andhotel staff bid the young hatchlings bonvoyage as they began their journey into theopen waters.

Hawksbill turtles are one of only two seaturtle species that nest around Bintan island.Although these turtles lay hundreds of eggs ina nesting season, it is estimated that only 1%survive to adulthood. Coupled with externalthreats like the illegal sale of its eggs, captureof the turtles for its meat and shell, and humanshing practices, the global population ofthe hawksbill turtle has been in decline.Hawksbill turtles are listed as being criticallyendangered by the International Union forthe Conservation of Nature.

Participating hotels are committed to:

1 New Resource ConservationInitiative Each YearTo conserve energy and water resources, toreduce the amount of waste sent to landllExample: Banyan Tree Bintan captures

runoff and excess rainwater for landscapeirrigation.

2000 Trees Per Year ForGreening CommunitiesRaise awareness of climate changeExample: Banyan Tree Phuket plants mangrovetrees to help extend the coastal defensesystem.

3 New Seedlings Youths EveryTwo YearsEmpower youths via mentorship andscholarshipExample: Banyan Tree resorts in the Maldivesmentor and provide additional tutorial supportfor young individuals.

PACKING FORTHE FAMILYMany of us love to travel, but few of us can say the same whenit comes to packing. Much less when it is packing for a familyvacation. Here are some useful tips and items to consider forthe next family holiday to make the trip more enjoyable.

It’s always handy for ladies to have a [1] cotton scarf (US$75) inthe bag - to be used to dress up a simple outt or to keep warmwhen it gets chilly. Include a sarong, as it will be a versatiletravel item – to be a skirt, dress, shawl, or picnic mat, and forthe ingenious, a bag! For dinners at a beach resort, gentlemencan consider this [3] hand-painted silk batik long-sleeve shirt(US$119) for a dash of Asian style.

When strolling along the beach or out at sea on a cruise, the [2]cotton sherman hat (US$16.90) will keep the sun out, while the[6] saa paper fan (US$9) – made from the mulberry plant, will keepyou cool and fresh.

If you prefer to bring your own toiletries for travel, the [5] GreenTea and Apple collection (shower gel US$20, body lotion US$22),

inspired by Banyan Tree Spa’s Apple and Green Tea PolisherTreatment will have you stepping out of the shower refreshedfrom top to toe! To feel at home, light up a [7] scented tin candlein jasmine or lemongrass (US$6) or [8] mini incense, packagedin an elegant silk box (US$19).

Luggage space is always a precious commodity... so save onspace with these adorable [4] sand-lled turtles (from US$2.70)- these nicely substitute bulky toys to accompany little oneswhen they go to sleep in an unfamiliar place. At the same time, you can also use them as paperweights to keep the maps fromying off the table.

Items in green are available at banyantreegallery.com, while thosein orange can be purchased online from angsanagallery.com.

Did you use to rummage through second-hand thriftstores for that out-of-print vinyl record by The Beatles orlisten to Teresa Teng’s soulful melodies on the turntable? How about reading and folding the corners of magazinepages to mark an article for future reference?

As people move towards e-books and using MP3s,some innovative local communities have come up withcreative means to recycle objects like vinyl recordsand magazines, giving these discarded items anotherlease of life.

In Singapore, old vinyl records are remoulded to forman irregularly shaped bowl, also a talking point for thecoffee table. In China, newspapers are shredded andwound tightly around graphite sticks to serve thosewho prefer to wield an environmentally-friendly pencilover an electronic touch pad. The UNICEF-supportedSapansiri Community Centre in Bangkok engageslocal womenfolk under its home-based productionteam project to make colourful beaded jewellery fromdiscarded magazines and paper.

Billions of plastic bags are thrown every year around theworld. CONSERVE, a non-prot organisation in India,

pays rag pickers in a Delhi slum to collect unwantedplastic bags which are stitched together and mouldedto create vivid patterned covers for notebooks and totecarriers. In Jakarta, Indonesia, toothpaste tubes andbillboard vinyl are recycled by a team of hearing-impairedindividuals into bags and home accessories.

You don’t need to have the latest electronic gadget tobe fashionable. Being environmentally friendly can dothe job just as well!

All items are available for purchase online at

banyantreegallery.com. Prices range between US$0.40for a recycled newspaper pencil and US$45.40 for atote bag made from recycled toothpaste tubes.
