Come and be part of our innovative school excursion program

...available for Early Childhood, Early Stage One, Stage One, Two and Three teachers and students from schools in the Eastern Suburbs.

Our program includes onsite lessons developed to fit with the:

zz NSW syllabus for the Australian Curriculum Science and Technology K–6zz Early Years Learning Framework.

Lessons are at Randwick Community Centre which has been transformed into the showcase Randwick Sustainability Hub.

Here you will see a range of energy and water efficient features as well as the productive Permaculture Interpretive Garden. The lessons we have developed use the features of the Hub and focus on a variety of science topics.

Children and teachers together can discover energy and water saving technologies and how they can be part of your life.

Choose either a full day or half day program from the stage one, two or stage three lessons as outlined...

Displays along the Water and Energy Wise Trail... The panel on the left outlines how much energy we are generating from the wind and the sun. The middle panel describes the features in the native garden.

The panel on the right outlines techniques for saving water in the vegie garden.

Stage one lessons:

Experience our Sounds Like Water and Hello Sun lessons to discover more about water, energy and light in our fun-filled sensory activities.

Choose either one or both lessons on the same day.

Sounds Like WaterA sensory experience where students are introduced to the topic of water. They will participate in learning about water sounds throughout the Permaculture Garden’s Water Wise Trail.

In this interactive activity, students have fun with water and participate in our water orchestra. They learn the importance of water to their life and how to save water at home.

Note: This can be a half day program or combined with the Hello Sun lesson as a full day program. The lesson is also suitable for preschool and early stage one students.

Hello sunA sensory experience where students discover and experience light and shade. They will find out how we can use sunlight to make energy. Students will explore the garden to see how light affects plants. They plant a sun loving vegie seed and discover a variety of energy saving devices at the Randwick Education Hub.

Through story tel l ing, games and demonstrations, students learn about the sun, light, shadows and shade and how they relate to plants, solar energy and cameras.

Students will understand how they can make energy saving improvements at home and at school and appreciate the sun’s role in our world.

Stage two lesson:Water Our ResourceCome and experience our Water Our Resource lesson to discover more about water, its importance and how to conserve it.

Students will take on the role of detectives to uncover several water mysteries such has how a rain garden works, how to keep a rainwater tank clean, how to create waterwise gardens and kitchens, how to use rainwater in the toilets and how water is used to make our food.

They will investigate and learn more about water saving devices and strategies while exploring the Water Wise Trail demonstrations at the Randwick Sustainability Hub. Note: This is a half day program.

CURRICULUM LINKS:Australian Science Curriculum—NSWzz Year 2 Earth and Space Sciences — earth’s resources, including water, are

used in a variety of ways.

The Life Around UsWe’ll find out about the life cycle of worms and their role as decomposers. We demonstrate how to set up a worm farm to turn our food waste into garden fertiliser.

At our new pond on our habitat trail, we’ll identify and document pond life. There, we’ll learn how rocks, logs and fallen branches can be used to make wildlife habitat.

In the Randwick Environment Park we’ll view the remnant Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub and learn how what we do in our homes can effect the survival of living things and investigate how this is being addressed.

THE CURRICULUM LINKSNSW Science Syllabus K-10 (incorporating Science and Technology K-6)zz describes that living things have life cycles, can be distinguished from non-

living things and grouped, based on their observable features ST2-10LWzz describes ways that science knowledge helps people understand the effect of

their actions on the environment and on the survival of living things ST2-11LW Living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features and can be distinguished from non-living things. (ACSSU044)

zz describes how people interact within built environments and the factors considered in their design and construction ST2-14BE.

Stage One, two or three lesson:Where does our food come from? With the ability to ask important questions about the food children eat we can help them make wise food choices that benefit their health, our farmers and our farm and natural environments. That’s why we have a new lesson for your students in our school excursions program — ‘Where does our food come from?’.

Students will uncover the mystery of where our food comes from by learning how to be smart food shoppers. They will learn about packaging, transportation and the water used to make our food and get it into our shops.

Students will also learn about the practical skill of growing their own food. They will investigate and learn about where to place the garden and what to plant in season. Students will learn, once the garden has been started, how to maintain it, manage insect pests and to improve the soil with composting and mulching.

This is a full day program starting at 10:30 and finishing at 2:30 with ½ hour for lunch.

Stage three lesson:Electricity rocksCome and get practical in our Electricity Rocks lesson and learn how to make an electrical circuit and switches and check for conductivity of materials.

This lesson will explore the technologies and the mysteries of wind and water turbines and solar panels. We will explore how to assess our energy use in the home and at school using a simple testing kit.

Note: This is a full day program.

CURRICULUM LINKS:Australian Science Curriculum — NSWzz Year 6 Physical Sciences — electrical circuits provide a means of transferring

and transforming electricity. Energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity.

Living World of SeedsWe explore the environment at the Randwick Environment Park and learn of ways that plants have adapted over time to cope with the hot, dry and windy conditions. We also investigate how we have adapted the local environment to grow organic food for people.

Science skills learned include conducting fair tests related to seed germination, making predictions and measuring data.

We will prepare seeds for germination using both wet and dry techniques.

help them to survive in their environment ST3-10LWzz students describe some physical conditions of their environment and how

these affect the growth and survival of living things ST3-11Wzz students investigate by posing questions, including testable questions, making

predictions and gathering data to draw evidence-based conclusions and develop explanations ST3-4WS
