UNCONVENTIONAL TIMES CALLFOR UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOMThe 21st century has ushered in the open source era – a time of hyper-connectivity between people and things, occurring at breakneck speed, and with total transparency. In this era, ordinary people are more informed and empowered than ever before, and leaders stand completely exposed. Yet, have leadership, management, and governance kept pace with the times? Do we need to redefine or update long-held principles to better suit this new open source world?

At Iclif, we believe asking the right questions – no matter how difficult, controversial or provocative – is as important, if not more so, than answering them. By questioning the norm, we can create new possibilities that are more relevant in today’s open source landscape.

Listed below are just some of the questions that set the context for what we’re doing at Iclif where confronting, debunking, and reinventing ‘classic’ management and leadership principles can help leaders face the complex challenges of today – and create their vision of tomorrow.

Are you a leader- or just a boss?

Do you really need power – from a position or

title – to be a leader?

Are competency models and best-

practice case studies still the best ways to build leadership capability?

At a time when a significant portion of the workforce is

opting for free agency rather than traditional

employment, how must we manage and inspire

performance?

Is the autocratic style of leadership practiced

by the likes of Steve Jobs an exception or the rule in today’s high-speed

economy?

How can organisations significantly increase their speed and frequency of

innovation?

MESSAGEFROM THE CEOWhat powers the greatest of leaders?

What gives them the drive to break through insurmountable odds?

Why are some leadership teams able to drive long-lasting success for their organisations even when many others in the same industry wither away under tough economic conditions?

The answers to these questions lie in a new and deeper understanding of leadership. Throughout my career, I’ve found that the core ingredient of great leadership lies in the combination of two things; a set of deeply held values that one never compromises, and a clear sense of purpose derived from those values. These fundamental elements give leaders a unique form of inner strength, which prevents them from giving up when the going gets tough. At Iclif, we call this strength Leadership Energy. Once they find their own leadership energy, leaders drive their organisations’ collective energy by shaping a compelling vision and strategy, establishing a nimble organisational architecture, and creating a winning culture. Hence our corporate tagline: Leadership Energised.

Why the express need for leadership energy, especially in these times of sophisticated, savvy millennials and empowered workplaces? Because, despite an annual global spend of USD80 billion on leadership development, great leaders are still few and far between. Recent events have shown this to be all too clear; most, if not all, crises – from the economic to the socio-political – are usually crises of leadership. And, when it comes to organisations, situations are made worse by poor corporate governance. The disruptive nature of the new open source, hyper-connected, high-speed age, compounds the challenge of leadership making it more complex – and exciting – than ever before.

I invite you to read this guidebook to discover Iclif’s philosophy, approach and differentiation. We can help support your organisation with 100% practical, growth oriented solutions in leadership development, human capital consulting or corporate governance. Here’s to energising leadership together!

Sincerely,

Rajeev PeshawariaChief Executive Officer & Executive Director

OUR VIEW OF LEADERSHIPChallenging conventional wisdom and rejecting outdated text-bookish models, we leverage proprietary research to take clients on a unique, practical and deeply impactful journey of maximising personal and organisational potential.

Leadership is not a title or position to command or direct a group

Not giving up on the envisioned better future is at the heart of powerful leadership

High Emotional Integrity is a prerequisite to maximising one’s leadership energy. Emotional Integrity is having the courage to acknowledge and accept one’s deepest desires without judgement or guilt

Leadership is about creating change for a better future

There are no competencies, best practice models, or personality assessments for not giving up. Staying the course despite resistance requires deep intrinsic leadership energy

After uncovering sources of their own long-lasting energy, real leaders align and maximise the energy of their people and organisations

Creating change encounters huge resistance at every step

Such energy can neither be learned in classrooms nor automatically acquired upon promotion or appointment. It must be self-discovered

Through effective corporate governance, the best organisations ensure that their leadership energy remains focused on ethical, sustainable and responsible pursuits

WE BEGIN BYREDEFINING WHAT GREAT LEADERSHIP REALLY IS

LEADERSHIP ENERGY COACHING CERTIFICATION (LECC)The demand for executive coaching is expected to grow globally, especially in Asia where it is still in its infancy. Leadership Energy Coaching is a new and different approach to traditional executive coaching that uniquely focuses on both personal leadership energy and enterprise leadership energy. It draws its power from the rapidly expanding field of neuroscience and is based on a continuous loop of energy with four phases: Prime, Release, Result, and Recharge.

When these four phases are in alignment, the result is a sustainable, natural source of leadership energy for individuals, high-performance teams and enterprises.

Leadership Energy Coaching is the practice of helping leaders to realise, and persistently act on, their core values and highest purpose for the creation of a better future.

The LECC Programme consists of four block modules delivered over a period of 6 months, at the Iclif Learning Centre. You will learn our proven methodology and tools for coaching the next generation of leaders, and be assigned a coachee for real world practice. Certification is awarded based on attendance at all modules, client feedback, supervision assessment, and a graded completion of a written essay on coaching techniques and practice. Upon completing the certification process, you will join Iclif’s pool of Leadership Energy Coaches and be considered for Iclif commercial coaching contracts throughout Asia.

HUMAN CAPITAL CONSULTINGWe believe the hallmark of successful human capital consulting is delivering measurable value. We also believe work needs to be engaging and meaningful if organisations are to thrive.

According to our research, whether an organisation can improve both individual and workforce performance to achieve its full, collective potential, boils down to the interplay and effectiveness of three key pillars of growth: Strategy, Organisational Architecture, and Culture.

We call these three pillars the Brains-Bones-Nerves (BBN) of an organisation. Just like the human body needs all three of these systems working together in harmony to ensure longevity, a business needs strong alignment between these three pillars to maximise commercial success.

We provide actionable solutions to help leadership teams address tough challenges, such as:

● Responding to continuous disruption with differentiated strategy and vision ● Aligning the executive team to perform at peak capability ● Future-proofing the organisation with the right talent, performance, and rewards structures ● Embedding the right culture, values, and behaviours critical for organisation success ● Designing Learning & Development Architectures for all levels of the organisation ● Leveraging innovation and technology for workforce performance and engagement ● Maximising awareness and understanding through innovative communications ● Exercising Board governance as a business differentiator

Our purpose is clear – to deliver human capital solutions that improve individual and workforce performance.

Created to be as thought-provoking as they are game-changing, our studies are widely published, covering numerous subjects relevant to contemporary leadership, including:

Open Source Leadership:Reinventing Management When There's No More Business As Usual

Spanning 28 countries and including the responses of approximately 16,000 executives, the Open Source Leadership study was designed to explore the form of leadership required to tackle both the daunting challenges and exciting opportunities in today’s transparent, free, and empowered workforce. It also explored the drivers of employee motivation for superior performance in the fast-moving and super-connected 21st Century. The findings are summarised in the book Open Source Leadership, published by McGraw-Hill, New York, and scheduled for global release in October 2017.

The AsianLeadership Index

Through high-touch interviews and a qualitative research survey, we asked over 4,000 employees in companies operating across 18 countries about their expectations of leaders, and what their current leaders are missing. The research identified 10 attributes that are important for leadership effectiveness in Asia.

Governance:An Insurance Sector Report

This study reviews the corporate governance practices of 50 of the largest public listed Asia-Pacific insurance companies by market capitalisation. The report provides practical recommendations for improving corporate governance practices in the insurance sector.

LEADERSHIP ENERGISED THROUGH PROPRIETARY RESEARCHThe concept of leadership in the 21st century demands fresh thinking that takes into consideration the increasing rate of change, complexities of a globalised world, and the need for sustainability in the face of uncertainty. Researching and publishing new concepts and insights into leadership, as well as corporate governance, are a priority at Iclif. We seek to open new horizons for leaders who desire to have greater impact on their organisations, industries and communities.

Additionally, Iclif partners with corporate clients on relevant applied research projects, of mutual interest, that addresses specific challenges while exploring new opportunities in both leadership and corporate governance.

Our research efforts are globally-recognised, and have garnered accolades such as the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Cause of Education in the Organisational Category at the Global HR Excellence Awards, and the HR Research of the Year Award in the Individual Category for our CEO Rajeev Peshawaria.

Too Many Bosses,Too Few Leaders

In this book, Rajeev Peshawaria reveals the secret behind why some leaders remain steadfast in the face of insurmountable odds while others falter, introducing readers to an intriguing new concept called Leadership Energy. He also goes on to explain how this energy, built on deeply-held values and a clear sense of purpose, can be expanded to an enterprise level by influencing others to create a cadre of supporters who understand the company’s goals and work to embody them every day.

You can read more about our research studies and thought leadership articles on our website.

Peter Webb brings us a stellar view of the wisdom literature and how he is applying this work in his coaching practice. Brain-Based Leadership

Taken from decades of research and over 60 publications, Dr Thun merges what we know about the brain and how it applies to leadership. Concepts such as brain functions, energy minimisation, and brain-based leadership matrix are woven through engaging stories of everyday leadership.

Brain-Based Leadership:The Models

A sequel in the Brain-Based series, Dr Thun dives deeper into the wonderment of the brain and leadership. Here he proposes three comprehensive models: B.A.S.E., S.I.M.G.A.R.D., and F.I.G.H.T. to help leaders address challenges of leading self and others. The book insightfully integrates the art and science of leadership.

Developing Leadership Talent

Developing Leadership Talent is an important resource that offers a practical, nuts-and-bolts, framework for putting in place a leadership development system that will attract and retain your organisation’s best and brightest talent. Step by step, the authors explain how alignment with strategic organisational goals and purpose, and effective developmental experiences, are the backbone of a sustainable leadership development pipeline.
