High Local Dogleg
Calcite Nodules
Geo-steering Multilaterals In Real TimeDrilling in Hydro’s Troll field in the Nor-wegian North Sea is known to be very tough, demanding drilling equipment of high quality from the surface all the way to the drill bit. The Troll field’s reservoir section is a complex, low-permeability environment consisting of shallow marine spit bar deposits, clean and micaceous sands. Calcite nodules and stringers up to several meters thick, derived from shell material within the sands, occur through-out the reservoir and can create difficulties for drilling. Depending on the dip angle, the orientation of the calcite stringer surfaces, the condition of the bit, and the drilling parameters when entering or exiting the calcite stringer, the bit can be forced aside into the more drillable loose sand. This behavior can potentially result in high local doglegs.1
Hydro utilized the wired drillpipe technology of IntelliServ’s Broadband Network™ on the Troll field during drilling of a multilateral well. The wired drillpipe proved to be durable and functional to expectations, and in combination with Baker INTEQ’s LWD technology, provided real-time “memory quality” FE logs, images and dynamics data while drilling. The information was used to reduce high local doglegs and steer the well in the targeted horizontal plane. Stress and fatigue on the BHA components were also reduced, lowering the possibility of stress-related failures.

Highlights
The IntelliServ Broadband
Network™ enabled the Client to
reduce high local doglegs and
steer the well in the targeted hori-
zontal plane. The high-speed data
for formation evaluation (FE logs),
images and dynamics while drill-
ing enabled the Client to relieve
bottomhole assembly (BHA) com-
ponents from stress and fatigue
that could cause several failures.
