But VanderMeer’s association

with the ministry—based in

Grand Rapids, Michigan—dates

back eight decades to the early

1940s, when he was an audience

member during a live broadcast.

Charlie VanderMeer

is an ambassador

at-large with

Children’s Bible Hour

Ministries. It’s a position he’s

held since 1999.

For many years, VanderMeer would reward children who completed their first year with the Children’s Bible Hour choir by taking them to lunch on his 1100cc Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.

“I let them choose any place but McDonald’s,” VanderMeer said with a laugh.

VanderMeer feels that he has lived a very blessed life.

“As long as the Lord gives me a voice and a wife I’ll keep it up,” he said. “I would not be where I am today if it were not for my dear wife.”

WAY BACK WHENCBH Ministries got its start when

a little girl sat on her uncle’s knee and asked him why there were no radio programs for children that talked about Jesus. Through that conversation, four pastors in the Grand Rapids area got together and decided to form a committee to create a radio program for children.

VanderMeer was nine years old in 1943 when he attended his first live

Better known as “Uncle Charlie” to millions of kids—young and old —around the world, VanderMeer may not be as active as he once was, but his impact is still felt in immeasurable ways.

“Charlie has slowed down a bit in the last couple of years, but he still answers a lot of emails, counsels with people in prison, mentors our staff and works on our radio programs,” said Terre Ritchie, executive director of CBH Ministries. “I don’t see him ever totally retiring.”

VanderMeer, 79, is somewhat of a creature of habit. After all, he’s attended the same church in Grand Rapids all of his life—except when he was a student at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. He and his wife, Bette, have lived in the same home for more than 50 years.

“These days, at my age, I live on memories,” said VanderMeer, after taking a break from trimming the grass. “A lot of great memories when I think of Children’s Bible Hour and ‘Uncle Charlie’ and ‘Little Charlie.’”

VanderMeer is also a magician and ventriloquist. He put those talents to great use many years ago. In 1969, at a cost of $363, his pal “Wally” was made. A few years later “Chico”—a monkey—came along. The three spent many years illustrating the Gospel throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Jamaica, Fiji Islands, Europe and Africa.

In recent years, VanderMeer developed a “Grandpa” puppet that he uses for senior citizen events. But first and foremost, VanderMeer’s heart remains with helping to give children a strong biblical foundation.

performance of Children’s Bible Hour. The program debuted only a year earlier on radio station WLAV, located on the seventh floor of the Keeler Building, in Grand Rapids.

He doesn’t remember the exact day, or even month, of that performance, but VanderMeer does recall being picked out of the studio audience by “Uncle Mel” Johnson to participate in the show.

“There would be a big studio audience and you could always watch a live broadcast,” VanderMeer said. “My dad would take me to whatever things were in town that were of a religious nature and of a spiritual nature.

“He took me one Saturday morning to a live broadcast of Children’s Bible Hour. All of the sudden Uncle Mel came up with a microphone and stuck it by my mouth and asked me my name and I said ‘Char-leee.’ I guess they liked the way I said ‘Char-leee and they invited

me to come back and read Scripture and recite poems.”

VanderMeer soon had a regular spot on the CBH program. He read from “Charlie’s Scrapbook,” helped in the dramatized stories, and even served as a junior emcee.

Then came college. At 17, VanderMeer headed off to college, graduating in 1956 with a major in radio and television production. While at Bob Jones, he worked at a commercial radio station, doing spot announcements and running the board.

VanderMeer returned to Grand Rapids, and in June 1956 began his first full-time paid job with CBH Ministries.

“They paid me $60 a week—$52 take home—to run the mimeograph machine,” VanderMeer recalled with a smile while taking a bite of pizza. “I thought I had made it.”

VanderMeer had another life-changing moment later that summer when he married his sweetheart, Bette. They were wed on Aug. 24, 1956.

The couple had met in their teens at what was then Wealthy Street Baptist Church in Grand Rapids. (It is called Wealthy Park Baptist Church today.)

By 1959, VanderMeer was named Assistant Director of the ministry. He worked closely with “Aunt Bertha” Shooks until her retirement in 1972, when he assumed the directorship and host of the radio programs. He held the position until his “retirement” in 1999.

VanderMeer and Bette purchased their first – and only – home on Lovett Street in 1960 for $7,000.

“We’ve done a lot of remodeling

through the years,” VanderMeer said. “We love it on Lovett Street.”

VanderMeer and Bette have three grown adopted children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

“I’ve loved every step of the way,” Bette said. “We’ve been blessed. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

ICON, EVENAGELIST, OVERCOMER

Despite popular belief, Vander-Meer wasn’t always known as Uncle Charlie. Beginning in 1956, he was called “Mister Charlie” on the radio programs. That all changed when Aunt Bertha retired.

“The kids would write in saying ‘Mister Charlie sounds so cold,’” VanderMeer recalled. “They called Aunt Bertha Aunt Bertha and wanted to know ‘Why can’t we call you Uncle Charlie?’”

Mister Charlie turned into Uncle Charlie by 1973 in a four-to-one vote by the children who wrote into the program.

“I’ve always looked at Charlie as the icon of CBH,” said Ritchie, who sometimes refers to VanderMeer as Sir Charles. “He’s dedicated his life to

serving God and serving children. He was happy doing what God wanted him to do and he was very good at it.”

Geri Walcott has worked at CBH Ministries since 1956. Back in the day she worked as a secretary and general office assistant and often joined VanderMeer and the rest of the CBH team on their 10-day summer bus tours.

“Charlie has kept his focus and hasn’t changed his attitude,” Walcott said. “He’s always been very welcome to anyone, anytime.”

VanderMeer’s life verse is from Philippians 1:6: “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (New International Version)

“Lots of people think they can get to heaven by their good works,” VanderMeer said. “You know, things like going to church and being kind to others.

“Those are great things, but they don’t do anything to get us to heaven. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) but by Me.”

“My question to people over the years has been, ‘What are you

Page 6: Uncle Charlie’s Legacy - Keys for Kids Ministries · The more you get to know God, the deeper you will want to explore His wisdom. The better you understand His holiness, the greater

trusting in to get to heaven?’”VanderMeer has endured his share

of physical challenges. In 2002, he had a severe bout with the West Nile virus and was in a coma for three days and the hospital for three weeks.

“I wanted to die so bad, but the Lord said, ‘Not yet!’” VanderMeer remembers.

In 2007, VanderMeer battled non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that was centered on his throat. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation, but was still able to make it into the office for his broadcasts.

In 2009. VanderMeer had his right knee replaced. “My wife can go up and down the stairs faster than me now,” VanderMeer said with a laugh.

In February 2012, VanderMeer was honored by the National Religious Broadcasters with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

CBH MINISTRIES TODAYThere are only five full time and

nine part time staff at CBH Ministries. But their experience runs deep as they total more than 250 years with the non-denominational organization.

“They are people who have dedicated their lives to doing this ministry,” Ritchie said. “We may be little, but we’re powerful.”

“Keys for Kids” is CBH Ministries’ flagship program. Launched in 1982, the first run of 5,000 copies of Keys For Kids devotionals were in the the

mail. Demand was so great, there was an immediate reprint of 10,000 more of the first issue. In September 1984, the Keys Radio program was started as a 4½ minute broadcast six days a week, hosted by VanderMeer. It was based on the Keys For Kids devotional, and continues presently.

“We had so many wonderful stories that were written for our radio program, we figured we must do something with these stories,” Ritchie said.

In 1986, a Spanish version, Tesoros Para Ninos (Treasures For Children) was first released. The stories were adapted to fit the culture and language. Keys For Kids was also translated into Romanian, Portuguese, and Arabic. In 1988, Tyndale House began publishing the One-Year Book of Family Devotions using Keys For Kids. And a picture book series called “Seasons of Faith” began in 2009, featuring illustrated stories from Keys for Kids along with a storytelling CD by Uncle Charlie.

The original hour-long radio broad- cast that VanderMeer helped make famous was eventually replaced by “Down Gilead Lane.” It is based on the Morrison family; an everyday family that deals with life’s tough issues.

“They have joys and they have trials and they need to help their families get through these things,” Ritchie said. “They base everything, every decision that they make, on the Scripture. They pray to have the answers for their prayer to impact their children for Christ.”

forever, there is so much to know of His ways and His character that you could spend a lifetime seeking Him and only scratch the surface. The more you get to know God, the deeper you will want to explore His wisdom. The better you understand His holiness, the greater your desire will be to spend time with Him in order to become more like Him.

There’s nothing more exciting than those rare moments when you catch a glimpse of Him in you! God is total beauty, utter perfection. Getting to know Him is an adventure that never becomes tiresome, because He is more fascinating than any wonder of nature—even these incredible, changing yet unchanging hills.

Nothing seems as unchang-ing as the broad, majestic mountains. Still, after spending some time here, tucked away so near them,

you realize you are just beginning to get to know them. You’re discover-ing there are as many subtle facets to this range as there are to an old and dear friend. The now-familiar sil-houette of their unique shape never changes, but the ridges and crevices on their faces reveal a wide variety of personalities, depending on the time of day, the weather, and the season.

They remind you of the beauty and complexity of the character of God. His Word teaches that while He is the same yesterday, today, and

Daniel said: “Blessed be the name of God from age to age, for wisdom and power are

his. He changes times and seasons, deposes kings and sets up kings: he gives wisdom to

the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and hidden

things; he knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with him. To you, O God of my

ancestors, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and power, and have

now revealed to me what we asked of you.” – Daniel 2:20-23 (NRSV)
