National Monitoring

Severe Winter Storm – Central Rockies to Upper Mississippi Valley Current Situation: A major winter storm is impacting a wide area from the Rockies to all of the Plains and the Mississippi Valley and the upper Great Lakes. Blizzard conditions, heavy snow and high winds have caused whiteout conditions, making travel extremely hazardous. Power outages are occurring and there are disruptions to transportation. Blizzard and High Wind Warnings have been issued. Lifeline Impacts: Safety and Security: • CO: Mandatory and voluntary evacuations in effect for a small community (seasonal residents) in

Hinsdale County, CO due to avalanche danger; one home destroyed (Region VIII SPOTREP update 1, as of 11:00 p.m. EDT)

• NE: Evacuations in effect in several counties due to ice jams and rising waters (Region VII SPOTREP update 1, as of 12:45 a.m. EDT)

• IA: Voluntary evacuations in effect for southern portions of Missouri Valley, IA due to levee overtopping (Region VII SPOTREP update 1, as of 12:45 a.m. EDT)

Mississippi Valley Flooding Threat: • Moderate to major river flooding is expected to continue for the Mississippi Valley over the next several

weeks, with continuing impacts to low-lying local roads, homes, and businesses • Mississippi river is slightly higher than in 2016 and 1997 • Heavy snowfall, recent snowmelt, additional rainfall, and ice jams are causing minor to moderate flooding

across portions of the Missouri River Basin with several river gauges forecast to crest in major flood stage; impacts are in Nebraska and Iowa

• Some tributaries to the Missouri River near Sioux City, IA are forecast to reach or exceed record flood stage o Portions of the North Folk Elkhorn River, NE (southwest of Sioux City, IA) and West Nishnabotna River

(southeast of Sioux City, IA) are forecast to exceed record flood levels mid to late week o Record flood levels are primarily in rural areas

Weather Outlook

• A slight risk of severe thunderstorms and possible flash flooding are forecast in the Lower Mississippi Valley through today. The thunderstorm threat will move eastward into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, and additional severe weather is possible along with locally heavy rain and isolated flash flooding.

• Heavy snow and blizzard conditions are likely to continue across the Central/Northern Plains. A swath of 6 to 12 inches of snow is likely into today particularly in central portions of the Dakotas.
