From the Executive Director

Francis Peter OjedeExecutive Director-UNCC

Beloved Patrons, salutation

from me and the entire UNCC management and we continue to appreciate your support without which, our work would have been difficultAs we continue to improve our

services, allow me to point out that one of the achievement this time round is the automation of our car park. We promised you and now we have delivered. This automation has enabled us overcome leakages, streamline parking and even offer better security to our clients. For the artists, please endeavor to register and get your access cards while our visitors who intend to use our parking ensure that you keep your receipts safe and do not fold it to avoid inconveniences when making payment. We continue to request to request you to support the initiative and also give us your feedback your feedback on how we can make it function better. The month of December 2014, we are planning to hold a grand Art sale at Nommo Gallery from 12th December 2014. The aim of this grand sale is to expose the Gallery Artwork to both local and international public and give the guests an opportunity to buy beautiful and unique art pieces at reduced prices. Please take your time visit the Nommo Gallery for more offers,

located at Nakasero Plot 4 Victoria Avenue. On a sad note, we lost one of Uganda’s greatest renowned playwrights and pioneer of theatre Industry in Uganda the late Wycliffe Kiyingi. Indeed Wycliff parted at a time when Uganda needed role models like him in the art and culture Industry. Wycliffe wrote several plays such as Muka Sempala, Gwosusa Emwanyi, Olugendo Lwa Gorogosa and Mudduma kwe kwafe among others. Currently, “Gwossussa Emwanyi” is among the Luganda set books for O’ Level examination syllabus. His plays have remained popular across generations especially his television plays, which have been seen by a wider Ugandan audience. The fallen hero founded African Artists Association, the first of all-Ugandan Theatre Company to promote local drama and influenced the free travelling theatre at Makerere University in the mid-1960s.Our sincere condolences to the widow, children, grandchildren, relatives, friends and the artist fraternity. May his soul rest in pieceI am encouraging you to keep referring to this booklet so that you do miss out on some of the interesting program especially during festive season, such as the Obsessions.Since this is our last issue this year 2014, allow me to thank you in a special way for all the support you have accorded us and we look forward to more next year 2015. I would therefore like to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Uganda’s rich cultural and natural heritage is legendary that has been talked about, written on and experienced by the mighty and lowly.

The Late Winston Churchill, then Prime

Minister and second world war-hero of Great Britain baptized Uganda “The Pearl of Africa” before independence and the tag line has stuck to date half a century after independence.

For a long time, there was no one-stop centre where one would go to experience and acquire Uganda’s Cultural Arts and Crafts. Until in 1994, when a group of producers and dealers in Visual arts came together under the Uganda National Arts and Crafts Association (UNACA), rented a space from the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) next to the National Theatre, where they established the first National Arts and Crafts Village in Uganda.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Kampala City, it became an instant hit and a tourist destination for those who wished to see and collect authentic Ugandan Cultural Crafts and Souvenirs.

In 2003, there were changes that brought into existence the National Arts and Crafts Association of Uganda (NACAU) under the leadership of a retired senior, Civil Servant, Politician

and a pioneer of girl child education Hon. Joyce.R.Mpanga and 8 other members on the elected board. NACAU rebranded in 2011 and was renamed National Arts and Cultural Crafts Association of Uganda (NACCAU) to give proper meaning to what the association has been known to champion and offer.

Its location and lay out in the form of a horse-shoe with red roofed and arched entrance structures offers a secure environment for dignitaries, middle class, and low income earners to experience the good customer care of the operators who are not only knowledgeable in Uganda’s rich cultural heritage but are also conversant with material culture and visual arts from around the Great Lakes Region, whose products are also stocked to make the place offer an insight into the cultural aspect of the Great Lakes Region in line with the East African Community Spirit of closer regional co-operation and integration.

NACCAU whose motto is “Our Heritage is our Foundation and Inspiration” through her operations have marketed and promoted Uganda’s rich cultural heritage both domestically and internationally. It has also offered direct

employment to over 200 talented artists and artisans who include those who are formerly and informerly trained, the disadvantaged, widows, young mothers, and their beneficiaries.

NACCAU’s model has since been emulated by other stakeholders resulting in a mushrooming of several arts and crafts villages around Kampala and other parts of the country. While this has increased shopping opportunities to the creative industry customers it has at the same time reduced NACCAU’s market opportunities in which heavy investment in market and promotion has been but returns are yet to be realized.

A small souvenir worth one US dollar will be a constant reminder of Uganda’s experience to a visitor who would have come to Uganda and carried it back home, long after the memory of the sumptuous meals, drinks, nice beds had faded.

For God and Our Country.

We are expanding the capacity of Ggaba water works to deliver an additional 50 million liters of water per day to the Kampala Water Supply Area.
