• Many popular nightlife locations in downtown Charlotte

● City of Charlotte wanted a public university in the area since 18
○ Charlotte submitted a bid in late 1880s for what is now Nor
State University but lost to city of Raleigh
● In 1946, state of NC opened the Charlotte Center of the Univers
Carolina (CCUNC)
○ Original purpose: to serve World War II veterans● In 1949, the state began closing these centers and was taken ove

She was chosen to lead the Charlotte Center from 1946-1965
then she served as president of Charlotte College
Dean W. Colvard
Appointed as the first chancellor of a young university in 1966
the challenge of converting the school from a junior college to
University. Grew the enrollment from 1,700 to just over 8,000
