Nashville Public Library began 2015 with a mix of the old and the new. First, we reopened of one of our oldest library locations, the North Branch Library. North had closed for several months to get new paint, lighting, flooring, furniture, and other upgrades; it reopened on January 7 during a community celebration. These upgrades were completed just in time for February 11, when North – which is one of two remaining Carnegie library buildings in our system - celebrated its 100th birthday. The new year also brought us to the opening of a brand new branch library in Bellevue. This state-of-the-art building features a vending-style café area, an interactive play-and-learn children’s area, a Studio NPL digital media and art space for middle and high school students, public art, and outdoor features. Now, we look to spring 2015. During the coming months, we’ll celebrate two annual initiatives: Community of Many Faces and Nashville Reads. In April, NPL will once again celebrate the diversity of our great city with free programs across town. We’ll kick off Nashville Reads on March 12 at the Main Library with an event featuring Ruta Sepetys, author of Between Shades of Gray, this year’s reading selection. Then, Nashville Reads partners will host free citywide book clubs, panel discussions, workshops and other activities that touch on the themes of the book. The finale event for Nashville Reads will take place May 12 at the Main Library in downtown Nashville. I hope you’ll visit any or all of our 21 locations – take a tour of the new Bellevue and Southeast branch libraries, or spend some time in our charming North branch and other neighborhood branches. Meanwhile, whether you do it in person or online, I hope you’ll use the library soon and be a part of our spring campaigns, both designed to promote reading, learning and community.

GETTING A LIBRARY CARD:If you live in Davidson County, within the Goodlettsville city limits, or if you are a Metro employee your library card is free. To obtain a card, you must present a photo ID and proof of current address. Cards are also available to persons living outside Davidson County for a $50 fee per year. In-library use of our materials and online services is available at no charge, regardless of residence.

USING YOUR LIBRARY CARD:With your library card, you have free access to more than two million materials including books, audio books, music CDs, and DVDs. You also have free access to our online resources including downloads, databases and our Ask a Librarian service.

You are responsible for all materials checked out with your card. Contact us immediately if your card is lost or stolen. Lost cards can be replaced for $1.00.And we request that you

notify us of any change of address.

Use of your card signifies that you have read and agreed to the library’s current rules for checkout.

Secondary Users: • Adults may approve another adult to pick up holds on their

accounts by designating a second approved user during the registration process or by filling out an approved user form at a later date.

• Parents and adult guarantors have access to their child’s account (up to 14 yrs.), and may designate a second adult to share access by indicating this on their child’s registration form or by filling out an approved user form at a later date.

Checkout:• You may have up to 100 items (including a maximum of 10 movies)

checked out on your card at one time.• Checkout period is 3 weeks for books, audio books, and CDs.• Checkout period is 7 days for movies.• You may return materials to any Nashville Public Library location

or book drop.• Identification is needed to check out materials if you forget your

library card.• Lending periods may vary for special services.• Self-service checkout stations are located at all libraries and

require the use of a PIN number.

Renewals:• You may renew books, audio books, and CDs 3 times if there are

no pending holds.• You may renew movies once if there are no pending holds.• You may renew your materials at any library, at our website, or by

telephone.• All renewals require your library card number - items cannot be

renewed when your card is not in good standing, when there is a hold on the item, or when the online system is down.

Holds:• Items on hold must be checked out on the library card of the patron

for whom the hold was placed.• When picking up an item held in another person’s name, present

that person’s library card OR the pick-up notice for the hold.• Approved users may pick up holds for primary cardholder after

presenting a picture ID.

Overdue Fees:• Cataloged adult books: 10¢ per item, per day. $5 maximum per

item.• Cataloged children’s books: 10¢ per item, per day. $2 maximum

per item.• Movies: $1 per item, per day. $10 maximum per item.• Playaways: 10¢ per day, per item. $5 maximum per item.• Audiobooks: 10¢ per item, per day. $10 maximum per item.• Music CDs: 10¢ per day, per item. $5 maximum per item.• Uncataloged books (ie. paperbacks), board books, and Adult

New Readers: 10¢ per item, per day. $1 maximum per item• Damaged or lost items are billed at full price plus a processing

fee. Replacements are accepted if they are identical to the material lost or damaged. Delinquent materials and fines are automatically routed to an outside collection agency after 45 days. For account questions, call 862-5789.

account.• Choose from menu options to renew materials, listen to a list

of what you have checked out and the due dates, or hear any outstanding charges.

The 2015 Virtuoso Showcase Classical Guitar series brings world-class guitarists to Nashville to perform concerts at the Nashville Public Library. Celebrating its fourteenth year, this series has a loyal following of classical guitar students and music lovers in general. The 2015 Spring concert series concludeson April 19 with the Sharpe Zohn Guitar Duo.

The musical relationship between guitarists Robert Sharpe and Andrew Zohn began in 1997 as student and teacher. Robert received his first guitar lesson from Zohn at the age of 12 and would continue under his direction at the Schwob School of Music (Columbus State University). Upon Sharpe’s joining the faculty of the Schwob School in 2012, the two formed this exciting new duo and are performing a diverse program which includes Mozart, Gnattali, Soler and Zohn. They have performed to wide acclaim throughout the United States and Europe.

Andrew Zohn and Robert Sharpe are dedicated to the promotion and performance of new music. In 2013, they commissioned and premiered Asphalt Jungle, a concerto for 2 guitars and percussion ensemble by acclaimed Brazilian guitarist and composer Sergio Assad.

Andrew Eliot Zohn is recognized internationally for his work as a performer, instructor, and composer. He has performed concerts on five continents including venues in Beijing, Cairo, New York, Rotterdam, Paris, Vancouver, Honolulu, Buenos Aires, Atlanta, Toronto, and Puerto Rico. He has also served as a guest artist at many of the world’s most prestigious music festivals including the Festival of New Music (Central Conservatory of Music, China) the Guitar on the Mediterranean Guitar Festival (Italy), the Iserlohn Guitar Symposium (Germany), the National Guitar Workshop (USA), and Guitare Montreal (Canada). Students of Andrew Zohn have won prizes in dozens of national and international competitions and have been featured on National Public Radio. Original compositions and transcriptions by Andrew Zohn are published through Les Productions d’Oz, Canada, Tuscany publications (Theodore Presser), and FJH Publications. His recordings for Clear Note and Centaur Records have received wide acclaim from American Record Guide, Classical Guitar Magazine, GuitArt Magazine, Soundboard, Guitarra Magazine, and Rosewood Review.

Since his national radio debut on National Public Radio’s acclaimed program From the Top, Robert Fielding Sharpe has received top prizes in national and international competitions. He has been a guest artist at the East Carolina University Guitar Festival, the Tennessee State University Classical Guitar Seminar, the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society, the Greater Cincinnati Guitar Society, the Virtuoso Showcase Classical Guitar Series, and the Fort Worth Guitar Guild. International performances include concerts at the Guitar Festival on the Mediterranean in Italy, the Sauble Beach Guitar Festival in Canada, and the Kras Guitar Festival in Slovenia. Mr. Sharpe has served on the faculty of the Tennessee State University Classical Guitar Seminar and the East Carolina University Guitar Festival. Recently, he joined the music faculty at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music. Mr. Sharpe holds a Bachelor of Music from Columbus State University and a Master of Music from Yale University. He is currently completing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the direction of guitarist Jason Vieaux.

The Puppet Truck

New Bellevue Branch Library!Learning Through PlayNPL’s youngest patrons will build cognitive, socio-emotional and fine motor skills as they play in an interactive area. As they solve science, geography, and spacial challenges against an interactive screen, they’ll also strengthen reading skills and flex their imaginations.

The Library will offer free, mentor-supported programs there, including 3D printing classes, music production sessions and art workshops.

Learning With Audio and Book PackagesAdults who want to strengthen their literacy or English language skills can use all-in-one audio and book packages from the new Adult Literacy Collection to study vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

The new branch library also integrates technology and public art in ways Bellevue residents have not yet experienced this close to home.

Great Beginnings by Beverly Stucker Precious

Rise Above by Brenda Stein

Beverly Stucker Precious designed Great Beginnings to involve the Bellevue Library community while providing an iconic backdrop to the many activities that will take place in the library’s outdoor gathering space. The sculpture includes bands of type interwoven through the branches and leaves containing fragments of opening sentences from literature. The artist included sentences suggested by patrons of the Bellevue Library. The sculpture uses dichroic glass, a reflec-tive surface that changes color with the angle of the light and the perspective of the viewer.

Bellevue woodturner Brenda Stein created artwork using hackberry trees that had to be removed from the library site. Rise Above includes suspended bird sculptures that are symbols of community resiliency and limitless possibilities. Above the circulation desk and the tech commons, nearly 90 birds gracefully soar together past the clerestory windows.

Metro Arts Commission Dedicates New Public Art in Library Branch

· The Spirit of a Place, an interactive history wall and map curated by local historian F. Lynne Bachleda, with help from the Bellevue History and Genealogy Club.

Many would argue that the show changed the course of Country Music during its 10-year run, providing a platform that helped launch the careers of some of the biggest stars in County Music. Join us as Nashville Now host and Country Music Hall of Fame® member Ralph Emery guides us through an afternoon of memories. Thanks to the Country Music Hall® of Fame and Museum, we’ve been able to access the video vaults of the original broadcast.
