What the programme offers

• Opportunity for Band 5 staff to take responsibility for day to day management of the neonatal unit with supervision and support from senior staff throughout their shift

• Challenges traditional ideas that the most senior nurse should be the nurse in charge

• Have completed a recognised QIS (qualification in speciality)

• Build up personal workbook of evidence of experiential learning

• Participate in supervision and record reflections on key learning events

• Time frame : 6 months or more

• Be willing to empower junior staff to take control

• Support their learning and development

• Share responsibility• Be willing to accept orders

rather than give orders

Success of the Programme 3 years on• Initially Band 5 Staff Nurse was encouraged as part

of KSF process to undertake the programme• Now Band 5 staff are requesting to undertake the

programme• Band 5 staff are being inspired by those around them

to succeed • Band 5 Staff Nurses have undertaken the challenge,

have awaited promotional opportunities within neonatal services across the Trust and 6 staff have been successful at interview and have been promoted.
