The PAL-LIFE Project - The background
Magisterium of the Catholic Church has intervened severaltimes in recent years to emphasize the dignity andpreciousness of each human being, even of those who areafflicted with a serious or terminal illness. Specialappreciation is shown for the approach offered by PC.
«… palliative care is a special form ofdisinterested charity. As such it should beencouraged»
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2279)
The PAL-LIFE Project - The background
«Here it is necessary to stress once againthe need for more palliative care centreswhich provide integral care, offering thesick the human assistance and spiritualaccompaniment they need. This is a rightbelonging to every human being, onewhich we must all be committed todefend»
(Pope Benedict XVI, Message for the 15th
World Day of the Sick, 11 February 2007)
The PAL-LIFE Project - Two recent PAV General Assemblies
“Aging and Disability”
(2014)
“Assisting the Elderlyand Palliative Care”
(2015)
The PAL-LIFE Project - The background
«Palliative care is an expression ofthe truly human attitude of takingcare of one another, especially ofthose who suffer. […] I encourageprofessionals and students tospecialize in this type of assistancewhich is no less valuable for the factthat it “is not life-saving”. Palliativecare accomplishes something equallyimportant: it values the person».
(Pope Francis, Message to the XXIGeneral Assembly of PAV, 5 March 2015)
The PAL-LIFE Project - The aim

• To stimulate the attention by non-ecclesial institutions, NGO´s andassociation working with similaraim.
• To act as an interlocutor foracademic and scientific institutions.
Selection of the experts• The expert group was selected considering diverse
geographical regions and professional backgrounds and professing different faiths.
