“Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for
you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there
among them.” Matthew 18:19-20
Dear Sisters in UMW and Friends of UMW:
What a promise our Lord has given us! Can you imagine with nearly 1,800 UMW members, of
all ages, in Long Beach District what God-given power we have when we agree to move
forward to help women, children and youth? Just think what we do with 800,000.
As President of the Long Beach District, I am also part of the Cal-Pac Conference UMW
Executive Team. At our recent meeting, held on March 17 & 18 at Aldersgate Retreat Center,
we planned our programs for School of Christian Mission at Biola University and our Annual
Meeting. A large part of this time together was also spent as a Spiritual Retreat. What a
warming experience to be with other women in sharing the love of our Lord and Savior. For
those of us in need of a caring hand and shoulder to lean on, it was there. For those of us who
need encouragement to continue on with all of our responsibilities, whether at home, church,
and in our community…it was there. The position as president is not always easy, but it
certainly has many, many rewards. I see those rewards in those women around me, whether it
be in my Circle of Friends at Trinity UMC-Lakewood, working with the Long Beach District
Board members, or Cal-Pac Conference Executive Board members. We are women who agree
that our affiliation with United Methodist Women gives us a community to live and work in
where we know God, where we can support each other through fellowship, and we participate
in mission for women, children and youth.
In this issue of the April 2012 Communicator you will find the School of Christian Mission
Registration and Scholarship Forms. Our studies will be Immigration in the Bible (Spiritual
Growth), Haiti (continuing as our Geographic Study), and Poverty (Global Christianity). If
you are interested in attending the Quadrennial Western Jurisdictional Assembly in Portland,
Oregon, the registration form is within this newsletter. Our next Long Beach District event is
our Spring Celebration on May 5 at Huntington Park UMC. This is Saturday and we are
celebrating by presenting awards to well deserving units and individuals, and eating a muy
delicioso! Fiesta lunch. A flyer is within this Communicator. Register early for all the events!
Don’t miss out on the fun!
In closing, I’m so happy to have seen many of you at our Spiritual Retreat held on 3/24/12 at
Redondo Beach First, which was lead by Melinda Trotti. We thank you, Melinda, for being
able to present the program in the absence of Rev. Sue D’Alessio due to Conference
obligations. With the wonderful hospitality of the UMW of Redondo Beach First, and the
closeness of the ocean breeze, it was a most wonderful morning.
God Bless-
Laura Wilson, President
Long Beach District UMW

Dear UMW sisters:
It was great to be a part of the Spiritual Retreat that was led by Melinda Trotti on March 24, 2012.
Thank you for all of those who helped make that day possible and for coming. The following day I attended the
Women’s Sunday at Lakewood Trinity where our own Laura Wilson was the keynote speaker. She not only was
the speaker, but she was also singing in the choir. What an amazing woman!
Please join us in celebrating Cinco de Mayo at our District Awards Luncheon on May 5th
with
registration beginning at 8am and the program from 9am-1pm. Hope to see you there!
With Love, Tien

Message from your Secretary of Program Resources:
The Worker's Ruling Passion
"Wherefore we labor that...........we may be accepted of Him." (2 Corinthians 5:9)
It is arduous work to keep the Master ambition in front. It means holding one's self to the high
ideal year in and year out, not being ambitious to win souls or to establish church or to have
revivals, but being ambitious only to be accepted to Him. It is not the lack of Spiritual experience
that leads to failure, but the lack of laboring to keep the ideal right. Paul is like a musician who
does not need the approval of the audience if he can catch the look of approval from his Master.
Paul says -- "Lest my body should make me take another line I am constantly watching so that I
may bring it into subjection and keep it under (1 Cor. 9:27). Praise God for the United Methodist
Women! Our dreams are big! We love to think outside the box. Stepping out in faith, we seek to
make changes that are vital for revitalizing United Methodist Women and friends. We love the
theme of our School of Christian Mission for this year, "That we may have life" and because of the
resurrection we are given new life, renewed faith, new relationships and the love and grace of
God.
As Secretary of Program Resources, we carry the primary responsibility of promoting the Reading
program! We want to give a "Big Thanks" to all who completed the four Reading Plan of 2011.
Please come and celebrate with us your recognition at our Spring Event on May 5th 2012 at
Huntington Park United Methodist Church. I look forward to seeing many more of you
participating on this year's Reading Program. It's never too late to start and keep on reading!!!!!.
Our purpose of the Reading Program is to encourage United Methodist Women members:
- to expand understanding of and participation in God's mission.
- to increase sensitivity to all human beings, their needs, interests and concerns.
- to encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today.
- to grow understanding of Scriptures as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary in life.
- to enchance self - knowledge and to strengthen involvement in local and global Christian
mission.
Together we will continue to grow and transform others. I have learned to relate everything to the
master ambition, and to maintain it without any cessation. My worth to God in public is what I am
in private. Is my master ambition to please Him and be acceptable to Him, or is it something less,
no matter how noble? May we all have a Wonderful and Happy Easter. If there are any questions,
here's my information: (310)540 - 5479 or email: [email protected]. Remember, come and enjoy
our spring event and hope you'll all take time to stop by and purchase something, of course! Thank
you.
With God's blessing peace, love and joy!

Happy Spring UMW Friends, I have two items that I would like to share with you. 1 _ First, is just a reminder about using your Education and Interpretation (E & I) form as a regular part of you monthly meetings. I believe if we used our E & I form with each of your unit meetings most of you would be awarded the Mission Today Certificate of Recognition each year. As Al and I attended your meeting, we were always amazed how much you do for your church, community and UMW Mission work. I think if we do not keep track of it each month we just forget how much work we do. Please try updating it at each meeting and I believe you will be amazed how many you would have forgotten by the end of the year. Remember we only need 8 to obtain a certificate. 2 _ I would like to thank all of you for the gift of my prayer shawl. I shall always treasure it and hold all of you in my heart. Thank you also for the beautiful cards, phone calls and even fresh fruit and good food that found its way into our home. Most of all I thank you for your prayers. With you and Gods help I have come a long way. My days have been filled with many doctor visits and for some of you who have been on Coumadin you will understand. Yesterday I was told my Coumadin had been level for 3 weeks and I am now on a new adventure with a new med called Pacerone. 60% of the time it restarts a heart in A Fib. If after a few weeks that has not happened I will then have surgery by Dr. Kim in Manhattan Beach to remove the scar tissue that is stopping the electrical charge in the top half from reaching the bottom part of my heart. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. We wish you and yours a very happy Easter.
Love and Blessings,
Betty Lopez

UMW Sisters,
Norma Smith is the President of the Yellowstone Conference United Methodist
Women. Her territory includes all of Montana, half of Wyoming and a slice of
Idaho. In the latest issue of Response magazine, she has written this beautiful
prayer. Because some of you do not get this magazine, I am using her prayer for my
column in this issue.
O GOD OF FAITH
You have told us that our faith in you can make us whole, and we can act
courageously and confidently in you word. Bless us with faith so your peace fills our
hearts and minds and allows us to listen for your voice in our lives.
O GOD OF HOPE
Help us to remember that when things get hard, you stand beside us, you never desert
us. As we put our hope in you, help us to know that those challenging times can be
used for good...to teach us, to embolden us, to lead us where you need us to
communicate your truth. Lord, bless us with your hope for a better world.
O GOD OF LOVE
You show us every day that nothing can separate us from your love. We in turn are
to love you with all of our hearts, souls, and minds anmd share your love with our
neighbors. Bless us with the assurance that sharing love with others, whoever and
wherever they may be, is sharing our love directly with you.
O GOD OF FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE IN ACTION
Guide us so we can become who you want us to be. Reveal to us how to share your
precious gifts with others and lead us to where you want us to do your work in the
world. Help us to take the faith, hope and love you have shown us and put it into
action.
Lord, bless us to be your good and faithful servants. In the name of Your Son, Jesus
Christ. Amen

Greetings United Methodist Sisters!
I hope this message finds everyone well during Lent season. This occasion is remembered as a time of prayer, fasting, and inner cleansing. Therefore, I wish you
all great peace, joy, love and blessings!
Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! (Hebrews 13:2 NLT)
THANK YOU to all of the units for getting me your membership numbers for 2011. I
am happy to report that the total membership count for the District of Long Beach in 2011 is 1,754! I am including the 2012 membership form in English and Spanish for your review and record keeping. It is critical that the Presidents of each UMW unit
keep track of its membership for this year. This will make it easier when the membership information is due.
Also, I hope everyone gets a chance to visit another UMW unit or UMC. This will
allow us to get to know other members and utilize our extensive resources. We can always do more in a team environment. As a reminder, I am here to help and serve,
so please let me know if you need my help for anything!
A HUGE THANK YOU to all the United Methodist Women, especially to all of the local MNOs and Language Coordinators, for your commitment, prayers, hard work,
and contribution! Please feel free to contact me any time. God Bless!
