This booklet includes all the information you need to know to navigate Orientation and prepare for after Orientation. Please read all the information carefully and share with your parents or family members.
Make sure your parent/family member reviews this booklet. Information on how to register for Parent and Family Orientation is on page 9.
August 19-21, 2016. Watch for your email in early August for information on your Triton Take-Off Weekend team number and leaders that will be your guide through the 3-day weekend schedule of activities that occur prior to the first day of classes.
August 21 - October 1, 2016. Make sure to pick up the WOW Booklet publication on Move-In Day or at the Help-A-Triton tables all around campus during the first two days of classes. The WOW booklet will include six weeks of programming and activities occurring on campus.

OFF-CAMPUS COHORT STUDENT ORIENTATIONAs a student attending a program at one of our off-campus sites (Mineral Area College, Jefferson College, STLCC Wildwood, and St. Charles Community College), you are required to attend an orientation at your designated site.

By the time you attend Orientation, your advisor already knows your name. You may have already met electronically or in person. Now you will meet face to face. Your advisor will help you learn to navigate campus. Your academic preparation, course preferences, and your advisor’s knowledge of University requirements will come together as you craft an UMSL academic plan. At the end of your advising meeting, you will finalize your class schedule and leave with a printed schedule.
If you would like to meet individually with an academic advisor prior to Orientation to have preliminary discussions, please contact your college that is listed on page 14.
Before you attend orientation and meet with your academic advisor, please read the Bulletin to review university course descriptions, academic requirements, and general education requirements at www.umsl.edu/bulletin. After all, you want to be in the driver’s seat as you plan your educational path.
ORIENTATION PROGRAMS
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION (NSO) is a full dayon-campus program REQUIRED for newly admitted first year and transfer students with 24 or fewer college credit hours.
TRANSFER STUDENT ORIENTATION (TSO) All transfer students who have accumulated more than 24 college credit hours must complete one of the orientation options below:
• TRANSFER STUDENT ORIENTATION (TSO) is a half-day session for newly admitted transfer students with more than 24 college credit hours. There is a
morning or afternoon session option.• ONLINE ORIENTATION is a 60-minute online tutorial that you may complete on your computer or tablet.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION (ISO) is a three-day program for newly admitted international students with 24 or fewer U.S. college credit hours. Visa-holding international students are required to attend ISO and NSO.
PARENTS AND FAMILIES AT UMSL, we recognize that families are an integral part of a student’s college journey. Orientation to university life is important to help family members understand the transitions and learn how to support their student. In an effort to provide families with specific information about the university and the campus resources available to new students, a specifically tailored parent program will be provided.

SSO ID In your admission letter, you received information about activating your SSO ID (single sign-on identification) and your Student Number. You will use your SSO ID to access your student accounts for logging into MyView, MyGateway, and other UMSL systems.
IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR SSO ID:Please visit: http://myview.umsl.edu and click the “Look Up My User ID (SSO ID)” link, type in your Student Number and click “Search”. Write down your SSO ID. *If you do not know your Student Number, please contact the Admissions Office.
IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR ACCOUNT PASSWORD:Please visit: http://myview.umsl.edu and click the “Forgot My Password” link. You will need to follow the instructions carefully to create a new password using this process. Be mindful of the password requirements. When you have created your account password:

TRITON EMAIL ACCOUNT SETUPAs part of your admission to UMSL, you are given an email account for your use. All official University communication is directed through the UMSL email account. It is very important that you check this account regularly for important information regarding registration, University events and emergency notification.
You can access your account through the MyGateway portal or directly at the UMSL website at www.umsl.edu. However, before you can access your account for the first time, you will need to change your password.
If you have not set up your email account, please contact the Help Desk at: www.umsl.edu/technology/tsc/ or call 314-516-6034.
MYVIEW AND MYGATEWAY MyView is a self-service system which enables students to access campus finances, academic records, personal information and enrollment.
MyGateway is a self-service site that consolidates many of the resources available to students, faculty, and staff. The site features single sign on, so you can use your UMSL SSO ID and password to sign-in once and access all of these services.
From this portal, you’ll be able to: • Check grades and class schedule• Check your email• Participate in Blackboard classes• Access the Writing Lab and NetTutors • Participate in LiveText classes• View the campus calendar and job listings • Link to DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System)
During Orientation, students will learn to navigate through these two portals presented by orientation leaders.

MATH PLACEMENT EXAM All UMSL students must demonstrate appropriate math proficiency before registering for math classes. UMSL offers a convenient online math placement test called ALEKS to assess your math proficiency.
DO I NEED TO TAKE THE ALEKS TEST?All undergraduate freshmen must take the ALEKS math placement test before orientation.
All other students: before registering for a math class, you must demonstrate proficiency through an ALEKS math placement score or transfer credit for the appropriate course.

COMPLETE THE TRITONREGISTRATION ORIENTATION FORM (TROF)Online at umsl.edu/orientation
1. You must have your SSO ID and password in order to login to the website to complete your form. Please Note: Your SSO ID was included in your acceptance and admittance letter from Admissions Office.2. Select your appropriate Orientation program: NSO, TSO, ISO.3. Login and complete a series of questions about your academic interests, select your Orientation date, and guest information.
CONFIRMATION EMAILOnce you have completed your Triton Registration Orientation Form online, you will receive an immediate confirmation email with your registered Orientation date. This will be sent to your UMSL email account only. A week prior to your orientation session a reminder email will be sent.If you cannot attend your scheduled Orientation session, please contact the Office of New Student Programs at least 24 hours prior to your session by email [email protected] or at 314-516-5291. Please provide your scheduled orientation date, name, SSO ID, phone # and email in order to assist with rescheduling your session.

TritonCard photographs will be taken at Orientation, or you can submit your own photo to use on your TritonCard prior to Orientation by visiting www.umsl.edu/tritoncard and click on Photo Upload. Pay close attention to the photo requirements!
During your Orientation session, please remember to bring a photo ID to receive your TritonCard (i.e., Driver’s license, passport, or other form of identification).
All orientation programs will be held in the Millennium Student Center. You will receive all Orientation materials at this time.

The main program will begin at 9:00 a.m. If you are interested in taking a tour of Oak Residence Hall or University Meadows, we recommend arriving promptly at 8:00 a.m. in order to check-in, take your TritonCard photo, and join the On Campus Living Tour station. TRANSFER STUDENT ORIENTATION As an incoming transfer student, we understand that you may have previous college experience. All transfer students who have accumulated more than 24 college credit hours must complete one of the Orientation options: TSO or Online Orientation.

*Academic Advising is not scheduled during your TSO.Due to the varied advising needs and availability, transfer students need to contact your academic unit to schedule a separate appointment (see page 15). At Orientation, we will acquaint you with the online registration process that you will use during your career at UMSL. Students are encouraged to be advised prior to Orientation.
TRANSFER ONLINE ORIENTATION In an effort to assist you in learning the UMSL resources and information there is an online tutorial that you may complete if you are not able to attend a Transfer Student Orientation in person.
The Online Orientation can be accessed on our website at: umsl.edu/orientation (click on Transfer Orientation, and then Online Orientation). Once you complete the Online Orientation, you can turn in the completion page in the Office of New Student Programs in 366 Millennium Student Center to obtain a Triton Manual, lanyard, Weeks of Welcome booklet and a free t-shirt.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION (ISO)ISO is a three-day program for newly admitted international students with 24 or fewer U.S. college credit hours. Visa-holding international students are required to attend ISO August 15-17. On the first day of Orientation, bring your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, St. Louis address, and emergency contact information for yourself and any dependents.
ISO will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at UMSL as an international student. You will meet other new international students and current students who will help you transition smoothly to life in St. Louis. Sample Day Activities for International Student Orientation

PARENT AND FAMILY ORIENTATION EXPERIENCEOrientation is designed to help both families and students understand resources, opportunities, policies, and offices that will guide you for the next few years. The support and encouragement you provide will be enhanced if you have a clear understanding of the educational and social opportunities here at UMSL and your role during this important time of self-discovery for your student. Many of the activities offered during the Orientation session are open to both families and students. A separate schedule includes several informational sessions for family members only, while the individual academic advising session and small group discussions are for students only. For many, this will be your first experience enrolling a child in college, while others are “seasoned” veterans. Regardless, the interaction among families during Orientation continues to be a favorite UMSL memory.

ORIENTATION FEE / MEALS/REGISTRATION There is no additional fee for parents and family members participation. Please have your student check the appropriate guest options on the online registration form in order to include orientation materials, breakfast and lunch.
TUITION AND FEES During your Orientation session, you will finalize your course registration and class schedule, and attend a Money Matters session. During this session, the Cashier’s Office will highlight the responsibilities and general payment information for your tuition and fees, discuss the process on how to pay and set up an Additional Authorized Access, and navigate through the MyView portal to preview a summary of the financial charges. The charges will represent the cost of the hours in which you have enrolled, room and board, and additional services (e.g., financial aid, scholarships, and any additional fees). The Money Matters session will provide valuable information and access to staff members from Financial Aid and the Cashier’s Office. The goal is to help provide students and their families a greater understanding of the financial landscape as they navigate their college career.
SUMMARY OF CHARGES A condensed summary of charges is given below. The total may vary according to the individual academic program, which may include lab fees or other charges. Residential Life & Housing and University Meadows are excited to welcome you to campus and become your new home! Living on campus your first year is an amazing experience, and we are here to help you in that transition. UMSL has many housing options that complement your major, academic goals, or interests.
Wondering what Oak Hall and University Meadows on-campus living options look like? Arrive early to Orientation and participate in a tour of our South Campus on-campus living options. Take time to see the facilities, programs, amenities, and learn from current residents and staff about the unbeatable benefits of what living on campus can offer our students.
LIVING AND LEARNING COMMUNITIES (LLC)Here at UMSL, first-year students have the opportunity to reside in living and learning communities (LLCs). By living in an LLC, you will discover an avenue for making friends and connecting with the campus community. These communities are the perfect place to embrace your sense of adventure, broaden your horizons, and make the most of your college years.
HOW TO APPLY Sign a Housing Contract online at www.umsl.edu/reslife When filling out your housing contract, be sure to select which LLC aligns with your academic field of study.
The Living and Learning Communities are on a first come-first served basis and will fill up quickly. We recommend applying and finalizing your housing contract before June 1, 2016.

TRITON OVERNIGHT EXPERIENCEAdmitted students starting their academic journey will have an opportunity to stay in an individual room in Oak Residence Hall the night before their Orientation session. The program will begin at 4:00 pm with check-in at Oak Hall.
Triton Overnight Experience (Two Options): • Monday, June 6, 2016 • Friday, June 17, 2016
Students who participate in the overnight option will have an opportunity to meet other new students who you might live with once school begins, and will also be able to learn more about the UMSL on-campus living experience and meet with your Orientation Leaders. This will give you further opportunities to ask questions about the campus in the informal setting of the residence hall. The overnight component will allow you to relax the night before and be ready to wake up the next morning to complete and be engaged in your New Student Orientation session.
There is a $25.00 fee for students to pay and register for this overnight program. This fee will cover linens and bedding provided in Oak Hall, dinner, and the entire overnight component.

*This overnight experience is not mandatory if interested in attending the June 7 or June 18 NSO session date.
MENIGITIS IMMUNIZATIONS All students residing in on-campus housing must have received the meningococcal vaccine unless a signed statement of medical or religious exemption is submitted to the University Health Services.
Missouri legislation requires students in University owned housing to either 1) show documentation of meningococcal vaccine received or 2) sign a waiver that indicates they have been provided educational materials, but have chosen not to receive the vaccine at this time.

VETERANS & SERVICE MEMBERSUMSL has a strong military heritage and is proud to have graduated thousands of veterans. The Department of Military and Veterans Studies was created in 2013 to improve on our already-great tradition. Our mission is to enable success for current and future veterans on campus and to create a researched-based curriculum for students who are interested in studying the veteran experience.
Ask your academic advisor about our veterans-only orientation course!The Veterans Transition class (MVS 1100) is one-meeting-a- week, 1-credit hour elective that is designed for incoming freshmen and sophomore student veterans. The purpose is to introduce students to campus, veteran-specific resources, develop study skills, and explore major and career options. This class is covered by GI Bill Benefits and can be taken in place of other first-year experience or university studies courses. Visit us online at umsl.edu/~mvs/ for more information.

...there is a mandatory welcome reception for you to attend in the morning beginning at 8:15 am prior to the New Student Orientation program beginning at 9am. Please check in for Orientation prior to this reception to collect your materials.

CONFIRMATION EMAILOnce you have completed your Triton Registration Orientation Form online, you will receive an immediate confirmation email to your UMSL email. A week prior to your Orientation session you will receive a reminder email about your Orientation session to your UMSL email account. Please make sure to activate your UMSL email and check regularly.
CHECK-IN Orientation will be held in the Millennium Student Center, (building #4 on the campus map), with check-in beginning at 8:00 a.m. You will receive a nametag and all Orientation materials at that time. The main program begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please make plans to be on campus for the entire duration of the Orientation program. *Transfer Student Orientation evening sessions will begin promptly at 4:00 pm and conclude at 8:00 pm.
PARKINGWhen you arrive on campus, parking will be available anywhere in Lot E and overflow into our parking garage across from the Millennium Student Center (highlighted on the enclosed map). You will not need to display a permit to park.

When you arrive on campus you may see some orange fencing, detour signs, and large construction project areas. Don’t worry; we’re busy
building a better UMSL. We have many exciting new construction projects including the Science Learning Building south of Benton Hall, Optometry Clinic Center north of Marillac Hall, and Anheuser-Busch Business Building north of Express Scripts Hall.
