Youth Education:

New Developments

1 UMS Advisory Ambassadors were directly responsible for 607 students participating in 2008/2009 Youth Performances from schools new to UMS!!

2 UMS School of the Year Paul Robeson Academy (Detroit) princial Jeannette Collins and teacher Rebeca Pietrzak with U-M President Mary Sue Coleman at the UMS Ford Honors Gala.

3 UMS Teacher of the Year Mike Grace holding his award and standing with Lynda Berg, Co-Chair of the UMS Education Committee and Ken Fischer, UMS President.

4 Engage Off-Stage: Kodo! A pre-performance event, which was a collaboration between UMS, Clague Middle School, and the U-M Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments, that attracted a public audience of over 250...very exciting for students who usually just play for 40 about parents and peers.

A Record Number of educators attended 08/09 workshops and requested tickets for 09/10 Youth Performances during June’s Spring Ticket Request Period. The Education Department is also developing New Partnerships with the U-M Center for Educational Outreach and the U-M Office of Admissions.

Student - Elementary“At the end of the concert I had to give them a standing ovation so they could know how much I loved their music. The inside of me felt happy by the end and when I walked out I had a smile on my face...”- Chris, 5th Grade, Emerson School

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

Dear UMS,

“We were lucky to see 2 UMS shows this week! I really had fun seeing Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz band.

I stayed focused the whole time.

I liked how Mr. Marsalis taught us about so much about jazz. My favorite instruments was trumpets.

To get ready for this show, our class did a lot of fun things. The one I liked best was listening to Wynton Marsalis tell about Louis Armstrong. I loved the show!”

Program Info

UMS is committed to connecting audiences with performing artists from around the worldin uncommon and engaging experiences.

One of the oldest performing arts presenters in the country, the University Musical Society is now in its 130th season. With a program steeped in music, dance, and theater performed at the highest international standards of quality, UMS contributes to a vibrant cultural community by presenting approximately 60-75 performances and over 100 free educational and community activities each season.

UMS also commissions new work, sponsors artist residencies, and organizes collaborative projects with local, national, and international partners.

About UMSUMS Education programs provide engaging experiences with arts, culture, and creativity for the entire southeastern Michigan community.

The Youth Performances, extensive teacher training and curriculum development, a yearly teen-driven performance (Breakin’ Curfew), and specially designated family performances comprise the award-winning program, designated as a “Best Practice” in 2004 by ArtServe Michigan and the Dana Foundation.

The UMS Youth Education Program is enhanced both by a 35-member Teacher Advisory Committee and by partnerships with school and community organizations.
