Principals Report

It is hard to believe that another busy term is coming to an end. We have certainly managed to fit a lot in to

this term and I will only touch on a few of the many highlights that our staff and students have been involved

in.

Not only have we just completed half yearly exams but earlier in the term, Years 7 and 9 completed their

NAPLAN tests as well. It is a proud moment when supervising the students, to watch them diligently attempt-

ing the tests and aiming to achieve their personal best. The students were prepared and wonderfully be-

haved and we wish them all the very best when their results come out later in the year.

We were lucky to have Joey Grauner

present at our ‗Sorry Day‘ and

‗Reconciliation‘ assembly. Joey, a former

student, discussed what reconciliation

means to him whilst Lachlan Steele and

Rubi Bourke spoke about the History and

impact of ‗Sorry Day‘. The students of the

NULLA Art group received certificates for

their award winning art work and the

school was presented with a trophy on

their behalf (See trophy below). Our

didge and dance group, ‗Spirit of the

Land‘, performed and the audience was

mesmerised by their powerful performances.

I am sure that the students who attended the athletics carnival had a wonderful day. Some students were

very colourful in support of their houses. Mr Gasper‘s calling of the races was amazing and it was fun to see

the staff take on the students in the relay. Just for the record, the staff won convincingly. I would like to ex-

tend a very big thank you to the dedicated staff across the College who organised and participated in this

day, as it takes a large team to have it organised as well as we do. Setting up the events, marking the fields

and organising the paperwork take a lot of work and this helps to make the day the success that it is.

Whilst the athletics carnival was in progress, Mrs Gilchrist was running a GATS day for our partner Pri-

mary Schools. This is one of several days on our calendar where the Primary Students have the opportu-

nity to experience High School and some of the GATs activities we offer. I know that students have op-

portunities in Science, Mathematics, Writing, Journalism and many more. From the smiles on the stu-

dents faces, I could tell that they had an awesome day.

There were many more highlights this term and I am sure that you will enjoy reading about them in this

newsletter. I would like to thank the wonderful staff here at Umina Campus for their dedication

and commitment to our students and to wish our students and their families a wonderful term

break.

UNIFORM – It Looks Great! Parents and Students please help keep it that way

Thank you to all parents who have already supported our drive to maintain an excellent

school uniform. It will only be sustained if teachers, parents and students maintain the effort

to make our school look as great as it does now. Most Parents have obviously gone to the

effort of purchasing full uniform (including ENCLOSED BLACK LEATHER SHOES). Please

make sure students arrive at school in full uniform.

Correct BLACK Shoes

As mentioned in the letter sent to all parents last year, only enclosed leather black shoes

will be permitted as we respond to the identified OH&S risk in all areas of the school. Failure

to wear appropriate footwear will prohibit a child‘s participation in key subjects that must be

completed in order to meet DEC requirements. Even on mufti days, students must have

enclosed footwear.

We ask that all parents support this important aspect of developing school image, safety

and self esteem amongst our school community. It requires a combined effort by staff par-

ents and students to reach the standards we want for our school.

Students should not wear white sports shoes to school on sports or PE days as this under-

mines the uniform, especially as large numbers of students have these activities each day.

Students have been informed that they could either bring white sports shoes in their bag or

have a pair of black leather track shoes that can be worn all day.

Aboriginal Education The Bush Tucka Garden

Did you know that we have a bush tucka garden that is

being revitalised? In the photo, you can already see the

outline of the turtle that was constructed a few years back.

Every Monday, Mr Medley or Mrs Hannah with the help of

Joe (our ACPO) take a team of students with them to work

on rebuilding the garden. We also have community help

from Gavi Duncan, Mitch Markham and Kylie Cassidy who all work through Youth Connections.

In the short time that we have been working on the garden, the improvement has been amazing! From an

overgrown mess to a place that is really taking form. The design of the garden has been a collaborative

process with the Year 9 Aboriginal Studies class and key staff and community making decisions on how

they would like the garden to look. We have lots of plans and

are enjoying working with the students and community in

getting the garden back in shape.

If you would like to help out in the garden, please feel free to

contact the school and leave your details. As the saying

goes, ‗Many hands make light work‘.

Plain Blue Skirts & Polo Shirts are not part of the Umina Campus Uniform. The tartan

skirt can be worn at both the junior and senior campus in Year 10.

Full school uniform will be a requirement for attendance at school excursions. Financial

assistance is available to families in need, by contacting the principal and completing

a student assistance application.

OUT OF UNIFORM NOTES FROM PARENTS

If a student is unable to wear uniform on a particular day, we ask that parents provide a

note indicating the problem and when the student will be back in uniform. This makes it

easy to distinguish from some students who may choose not to wear uniform. This should

be shown to the roll teacher and others who may enquire during the day.

ALL NOTES – whether for absences, uniform or any other reason must be written

entirely by the parent / guardian – not written by the student and merely signed by an

adult. This makes it harder for bogus notes to be presented, as sometimes occurs.

Bush Tucka Café

Did you know that we have the ‗Bush Tucka Café‘ that Ms Beemster runs with a keen group of students?

Ms Beemster teaches the students how to use the coffee machine and how to take orders. The students

then very professionally take orders and serve food to all staff. The plan is to include students in the orders

and once the AECG approves our name, there will be a beautiful artwork out the front of the café to show

that it is open. The students are improving their communication and literacy skills and the staff are enjoying

a beautiful menu. Thanks team!

Junior AECG

Did you know that we are in the process of creating a sub- branch of the Junior AECG? Ms Kitson will be

working with a group of students who will be endorsed through the Koorana AECG. These students will

then have the opportunity to make decisions that will have a positive impact on the school. This will be a

very exciting opportunity for our students.

Aboriginal Art Group

Did you know that we have an award winning Aboriginal Art group

which meets every Thursday with Ms Bruckdorfer and Mrs Branni-

gan?

In the last newsletter we reported that the students achieved a

Highly Commended for their Art work in a reconciliation competi-

tion. Well, a similar art work has also taken out first prize in the

Year 7- 12 Indigenous student section at Gosford Gallery. The

school was awarded a $500 prize and certificate for the school. As

soon as the Art work is back at Umina Campus it will be framed

and placed on display. Congratulations to the staff and students

involved in this wonderful achievement!

Aboriginal Leadership day

On Wednesday 6th June, Satali Tevi- Fuimaono , Sean Downey and Janelle Rooney attended an Aborigi-

nal Leadership day. The day allowed the students to develop leadership skills and to develop their confi-

dence by exploring and discussing their Aboriginal Heritage.

All students thought the day was very productive and were very excited to know that the day would turn into

a leadership program allowing them to further extend on the valuable lessons they learnt on this day. The

students are learning these skills to instil upon other Aboriginal students at school and assist in the devel-

opment of a Junior AECG. The students made a lot of new friends and they should be commended on the

way they presented themselves and represented their school.

Year 5 Journalism GATS Day

On Wednesday 6th June, year 5 students in our

Learning Community were invited to participate in

an enrichment day run by the Umina Campus for

students interested in Journalism.

Students worked collaboratively with students from

other Primary Schools and Peer Mentors in a simulated news

room. Responding to scenarios as they came to hand, budding

reporters compiled investigative reports and sports reports

using technology.

Thankfully the weather stayed dry, and so students had an

opportunity to make new friends with Peer Leaders and

children from other Primary Schools at the lunch break

while enjoying a pizza lunch.

Thank you for your enthusiasm Year 5, and thank you to

Mrs Martin and Mrs Kitson for leading this enrichment day.

Peter Sutherland Library Many exciting events are occurring all over Australia to celebrate the National Year of Reading. Classes in our Library enjoyed the monthly themes. In February we laughed with the greatest selling series for the year, Tin-Tin and in March we were thinking through puzzles, tall tales and great wonders, while in April our

feelings acknowledged and explored our fighters and supporters of Australia‘s war efforts. In May we have begun to investigate the survivors of recent Tsunamis and the characters who escaped with their lives in The Hunger Games. Our explorations have taken us through Graphic novels, Info books and quizzes, books about the history of World Wars, Vietnam and recent battles. The ANZAC topic began with film clip about the artists‘ view of war, then supplemented with web searches and extended with free choice reading. HOMEWORK CENTRE (formally ‗Tuesday Tutoring‘) We are pleased to announce that study assistance for your child will continue to be offered in Semester 2. The Homework Centre will reopen on Tuesday 24th July (week 2 term 3) and continue each week until Tuesday 4th September (week 8 term 3). WHERE: Umina Campus Library WHEN: 3pm- 4pm The purpose of The Homework Centre is to:

Allow students access to library resources including reference books, computers and photocopying

facilities. (note: charges apply for photocopying/printing)

Offer a quiet place to do revision or complete homework & assignments

Provide motivation and focus to meet deadlines

Encourage peer tutoring

Offer students general assistance

PLEASE NOTE: This service is NOT intended as individual tuition in a specific subject but rather a shared study space, supervised by 2-3 dedicated teachers from a variety of subject areas. We were delighted with the number of students that attended last term and we hope that more students choose to come along next term! Students do NOT have to commit to attending EVERY week! The flexibil-ity of The Homework Centre allows students to attend during those ‗busy‘ times in the term when assign-ments are due and tests are looming. How do students get involved?

Wait on the library steps until 3pm Bring a parent note stating permission to participate on that particular afternoon Come prepared with homework/ assignments/ work books and necessary equipment Register their name and study goal for the session with the Supervisor Come ready to be productive!

YR 9 GRADUATION CERTIFICATE

At the end of the year, Yr 9 students and their family will attend the 2012 Graduation Assembly where

students will be presented with a certificate to mark the completion of their studies at the Umina Campus.

This certificate is graded and is based on our Core School Values.

With the support of their Team Leader and parents, students will use a booklet issued to evaluate their

adherence to the Core School Values and make changes where needed. Students of concern may be

required to attend individual meetings with the Team Leader or a Deputy in addition to those scheduled

throughout the year.

This booklet will be considered as part of the decision process when the panel meets in term 4 to allocate

certificates.

INDIGENOUS TOUCH FOOTBALL GALA DAY – WYONG

2012. This has

become an annual

event on the school

calendar with this

being the 4th year

the event has run.

Brisbane Water

Secondary College

– Umina Campus had entered a mixed team of players. Upon arrival every student was presented with an

official team shirt. Ours was BRIGHT fluoro yellow. This was a great colour to recognise on the field but

not so good for the muddy conditions the students were to play on all day (they were a lot less yellow by

the end of the day!)

Overall the day was about community, participation and the theme of ―Let‘s Work Together‖.

The teams were organised into 2 pools of 5 with each team playing 4 games with 1 bye. There were 6

players on the field at any one time and 2 of those players had to be female. It must be pointed out here

that most other schools had recruited year 9 – 12 students to make up their teams. While they were much

taller and a little bit faster than BWSC players, our team played exceptionally well and kept up with every

team on the day. While we may not have won many on the day BWSC was never far behind with most

games only 1 – 2 tries the difference.

A couple of key performances must be mentioned. Joel Body and Alexis Nelson-Staunton both scored 3

tries each on the day. Brody Alonti was the most elusive, agile player on the team always making metres

beating many players twice his size! Lastly special thanks to Zac South whose captaincy and expertise on

the field lifted the team to play to the best of their ability.

Overall, every player on the team did a great job representing their school and their indigenous heritage.

Well done to all!

Memorial Garden

Our schools Memorial Garden was repositioned and

replanted last month with the centre piece being a

new headstone and a beautiful pink Frangipani.

Students from the Support Unit worked tirelessly all

day to prepare the soil and plant the plants that Mrs

Honeysett had bought in, especially for the new

Memorial Garden.

The students in our SRC had spoken to Mrs Honysett

several months previously, about the possibility of moving the garden

to a sunny, more accessible spot. They mentioned they would like to

see a frangipani planted in memory of their dear friend, Indah Weath-

erstone, who very sadly had passed away last November from Can-

cer. Frangipanis were Indah‘s favourite flower.

The garden was moved to the end of C Block, close to Indah‘s and Mrs Honeysetts

classroom. The plants are starting to establish themselves now and by next summer

there should be a beautiful show of pinks and purples, from the plants that were

selected.

Hunter Central Coast Regional SRC meeting

On the 6th of June, Sarah Lent and I attended the Hunter Central

Coast Regional SRC meeting.

At this meeting we had the chance to bond with other SRC students

from all around the region. We also enjoyed team building activities

and listened to guest speakers including Regional Director Frank

Potter and Noel Grannall.

At this event we nominated to run for State SRC which is a 4 day

conference in July/August. Sarah and I both nominated and gave a

speech. I was lucky to be 1 of only 3 people selected and am now on

the State SRC team.

Thanks to Ms Crump for supervising the bus. All in all it was a fantastic day!

SPORTS REPORT

Term Two has been exceptionally busy for students and staff at Brisbane Water Secondary College

Umina, with the recent whole school Athletics Carnival a clear highlight. With tremendous student support,

the carnival once again highlighted the array of talented athletes at BWSC. Congratulations to all 108

students who have been selected to represent BWSC at the upcoming Brisbane Water Zone carnival.

Girl’s Rugby 7’s:

The U14 and U16 teams

travelled to Western

Sydney to compete in a

Rugby 7‘s gala day. With

the U16 team already

selected to represent the

Central Coast in the

upcoming NSW Country

Championships, the girls

were confident of suc-

cess. The day could not

have gone better for both

teams, as the girls came

away undefeated. Nu-

merous students were

also targeted as future NSW representatives. Congratulations to all students

involved.

U15 Boys Rugby Union Team:

The team kicked off their Combined High Schools Championship campaign with

a convincing Round 1 victory. With the majority of the team having never played Union before, the boys

demonstrated their phenomenal potential for future Rugby success. Good luck to these boys as they

move through to the second round.

Brisbane Water Zone Cross Country Carnival:

BWSC placed 5th overall at the recent Zone carnival, with the following students selected to represent

Brisbane Water Zone at the Regional Cross Country Championships

TWO-TIME AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION 2012

SATALI TEVI-FUIMAONO

An attempt to improve his fitness for rugby league has resulted in

Australian born Aboriginal-Samoan, Satali Tevi-Fuimaono realising

his boxing potential. Now the representative rugby league player,

Year 9 Brisbane Water Secondary College student is juggling

success in two sports.

Satali, at fourteen years of age, is a two-time Australian Boxing

Champion, three-times NSW Champion who is currently training for

the Ringside World Championships in Kansas, USA, in early Au-

gust 2012. Now all we need to do is raise enough money to get

him there to fight and bring home the title for Australia.

That‘s where your help and support would be greatly appreciated....We need a total of $25,000 to cover

flights, accommodation and other expenses. Our campus is working together with Satali and his family to

help raise the much needed funds before they leave. We are hosting a ―sport‖ themed dance party on

Wednesday 20/6 as well as selling silicone wristbands made specifically to help raise awareness for this

cause—where all proceeds raised will help contribute to the family‘s expenses. For more information

College Wins Overall

Champion at Wingham

Beef Week For the very first time BWSC attended the

prestigious Wingham Beef Week 2012. Wing-

ham Beef Week celebrated its 25th Year of

Competition presenting the largest program in

the shows history.

A record number of schools and pastor-

alists attended from throughout NSW

representing 280 students and 125 cat-

tle. The quality of cattle presented was of

a very high standard providing an ex-

tremely competitive field.

BWSC Agriculture Department presented six

cattle for various competitions achieving

successful results as follows.

BWSC received the ultimate honour winning

Overall Champion of the Show and Reserve

Champion on the Hook. The steer was led by

Joshua Cottam, bred by Mr and Mrs Scott of

Bathurst and sponsored by Umina Rotary

Club.

Another highlight of the show was the Paraders Competition with over 250 students competing in the Cattle Paraders Classes. On the back of the above wins, our BWSC Paraders achieved the following impressive results. 2nd Amy Marlin 17 year old class 3rd Shaniah Tucker 13 year old class 4th Joshua Cottam 16 year old class

Finally, an extremely commendable 5th place to

Clint McAnally, who competed against approxi-

mately 120 students in his class.

Two other classes new to BWSC Students at Wingham Beef Week included Best Presented Parader and

Best Presented Steer.

Congratulations to Joshua Cottam who won the Best Presented Parader of the Show. Other highlights included BWSC winning 2nd and 3rd place in Best Presented Steers of the show. Kyle McCue O‘Brien received a highly commended for All Rounder representing the school and Luke Brooks, Joshua Cottam and Amy Marlin received encouragement awards for effort throughout the show.

A diverse range of educational programs were conducted throughout the show which students found very

interesting and beneficial.

This concludes a very successful autumn show season. Cattle have arrived in preparation for the coming

spring season commencing in August. Students and staff would like to extend their sincere thanks to breed-

ers, Umina and Woy Woy Rotary Clubs and Parents and Citizens Association for their continued sponsor-

ship of this valuable program.

BWSC Umina Schoolboys Rugby League

Our schoolboy rugby league program for 2012 got off to a solid start this week with the commencement

of the u/14 Buckley Shield competition.

The boys were looking and feeling like a million dollars in their brand new kit kindly provided by the

mighty Umina Bunnies Rugby League club.

Our state title defence of the 2011 Buckley Shield win began with a successful Central Coast gala day

with wins over Lisarow, Kariong, Gorokan, Terrigal, and Tuggerah Lakes College, being crowned central

coast champions for 2012. Good luck to the boys as they now progress into knockout competition mode

against this states premier schoolboy teams.

Our u/13 and u/15 teams are ready to kick off their season this month in the All Schools and Country Cup

competitions. These teams are building strongly and are looking good for 2012.

Special thanks to all the hard working and dedicated members of the Bunnies burrow who have gener-

ously provided us with a new set of jerseys, as well as socks and shorts for all 3 of our teams for the

second year in a row (special mention to Scott Ford & Kevin Hulls). We look forward to another great

year together, playing good footy and making this great school proud!

Both 7S classes have enjoyed the English team-teaching program to deliver the themed Poetry Unit

this term. Students get the benefit of the expertise of 2 teachers, as well as room to work across

classes in group work and discussion tasks.

When: Tuesday afternoons after school. 3-4pm Where: Art Room 1 & 2 Why: To give students the chance to finish artwork off from class. For students to bring in artwork from home for help/advice For students to extend themselves in developing art skills and trying new media. Students to work with peers and teachers in a relaxed environment and help each other to learn visual arts skills.
