UMG Year 4-6 students went on excursions which was an excellent opportunity to engage in physical and social activities with their peers. Last Friday our Year 5s went to Sky Zone. Today saw our Year 6s travel to Thunderbird Park and our Year 4s to Jungle Adventure Play and Bounce. We have had new bubblers installed around our school thanks to our hard working UMG P&C. These will provide nice chilled water for our students. With only 8 more school days remaining, this will be our last UMGnews for 2020. We have been working hard towards preparing for the 2021 school year where we welcome new staff. With this we say farewell and wish all the happiness and success to Emma McVean, Milan Grubor and our Guidance Officer, Lisa Flowers. Please find below a list of the proposed classes and teachers for 2021.

Congratulations 2021 Student Leaders

In recent weeks I have had the pleasure of working with the year five teachers and students, as students applied for 2021 school leadership positions. Congratulations to all year five students who took part in the application process. Not all applicants can be successful, however they each showed determination, resilience and thoughtfulness.

As the end of the school year is fast approaching, a sense of pride amongst students,

teachers and our community is clearly evident.

Proud students, proud teachers and a proud community

It has been wonderful to see confident students proud of their achievements on my recent visits to classrooms. Across the school year, each child’s growth and development is unique and this is the time to celebrate the achievements of all our

learners in 2020. Thank you for supporting your child’s learning in a changed learning environment this year. As a UMG Community we can all be proud of our achievements in 2020.

Academic Reporting

Written reports for student achievement in learning areas taught and assessed during semester two will be provided to parents/ carers in week 10. Written reports provide information about what students have been learning in each learning area and the level of achievement demonstrated. Teachers utilise marking guides for assessment tasks to guide decision making about achievement standards. Teachers also engage in a moderation process to ensure consistency of teacher judgment for achievement levels.

A five point scale is used to communicate the level of achievement for each student as well as a level of effort they have applied to each learning area. These five point scales for achievement are described in the following way:

At Upper Mt Gravatt State School, semester reports are provided via email. Please ensure your email address is up to date with our administration team so you receive this information about your child’s learning. The email will come from the following address [email protected]

If you have questions about your child’s report please contact your child’s teacher, Deputy Principal or Head of Curriculum.

UMG Inclusion Yvette Montgomerie On Monday 23 November, 5B engaged in an educational program to provide them with a greater awareness of the needs and challenges faced by people with disabilities. The schools departmental physio and advisory visiting teacher led the session. Students listened and engaged in a session on wheelchair etiquette and safety.

The first rule of etiquette when interacting with people in wheelchairs, or power chairs, is to remember that one should not focus on their disability. Instead, focus on the person. Some people who use wheelchairs can walk with aid or for short distances.

Here are some basic tips everyone should take into consideration when interacting with a wheelchair user.

1. Don’t lean on my chair

2. Respect my personal boundaries

3. Focus on me not the wheelchair

4. Don’t change your language use for me

5. Please don’t try to move my wheelchair for me

6. Ask if the wheelchair user needs help

7. Be cognizant when inviting me to certain events

8. Treat me like anyone else

Students had to sit for their ‘L Plate’ licence and then take part in a practical driving test in the wheelchair. They had to navigate a course around markers, make two 360-degree turns, reverse and do a three point turn. Students lost points for hitting the markers. Most students passed and got their ‘P Plate’ licence.

Students were surprised at how tricky it was to manoeuvre the wheelchair around obstacles and they commented that it hurt their hands propelling the wheels. It was a valuable and worthwhile experience.

It is everyone’s job to make sure everybody has the same opportunities to

participate in every aspect of life to the best of their abilities and desires.

Chinese News Lilian Chan This semester, the Year 4 students studied the unit of "Mini chef" and learnt how to make dumplings. The students were very engaged in Chinese language learning and enjoyed authentic Chinese dumplings. Thank you to all the Teachers and Teaching Assistants for supporting and helping with the cooking lesson in week 6. As requested by the students, the below is a recipe for making Chinese dumplings. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! INGREDIENTS 500 gram fatty ground pork mince 1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated peeled ginger 1/2 teaspoon sugar, salt 2 teaspoons soy sauce (1 teaspoon dark and 1 teaspoon light soy sauce) 1 teaspoons oyster sauce 1/2kg finely chopped flowering chives, flat Chinese chives (garlic

chives), or scallions 24 to 30 round dumpling wrappers (available at Asian shop) Accompaniment: vinegar dipping sauce Garnish: thinly sliced scallions

PREPARATION 1. Combine all ingredients (except chives and wrappers) in a large bowl,

then stir in chives. 2. Place a slightly rounded teaspoon of filling in centre of a wrapper and

moisten area around filling with water. Fold in half to form a crescent and press to seal. Moisten one corner and bring corners together, pressing them, to form a tortellini-shaped dumpling. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers.

3. Bring a pot of water to boil. Drop the dumplings into the boiling water and cover the pot. As soon as the dumplings start to float (meaning they are cooked), dish them out using a strainer onto a serving platter. Serve hot with black vinegar.

END OF YEAR BOOK RETURN

As the end of the school year rapidly approaches it’s time to search out those library books and return them to the library. All borrowing has now finished and students must return all books by the end of this week.

We still have many students with overdue library books, some dating back to first term this year. Please search those book shelves and return books as quickly as possible. Students are notified regularly of overdue library books. Individual notices have gone home with students identifying long term overdue books. A prompt return of these books would be appreciated.

PREVENT THE SUMMER SLIDE!

In primary age students, the summer months can undo months of learning from the school year. Paying attention to what our kids are doing when they are off school is important not only for their performance in the upcoming year, but also to help them do better as they set out for life in later years.

1. Surround kids with a variety of books

Kids are more likely to read when they get to choose a book them-selves. Give them access to a number of books at their reading level and have them choose.

2. Read with your child—aid with comprehensions and learning Comprehension is key to becoming a good reader. Sit down your child while he/she reads. Make it an experience you both share.

3. Read consistently—even if it is for just a few minutes every day Regular reading is essential to turn reading into a habit. No matter where you are—travelling, in an air-plane or at Grandma’s… make sure to carve a few minutes for regular reading time. Before bedtime or first thing in the morning are the easiest to incorporate into your day.

4. Track your child’s reading, motivate your child Keeping a log, giving your child points, having them work towards a goal, are all great ways to motivate a child to read regularly.

5. Fill your child’s days with enriching activities related to their reading Extend reading with fun book related crafts and activities. They make reading more fun, drive learning are great ways to engage a budding but reluctant reader.

Enjoy your holiday break and happy reading!

YMCA Upper Mt Gravatt OSHS Messages from the Team

We’re very excited for our upcoming Summer Holiday Club program! For returning families wanting to book in for the school holidays, you can do so using the My Family Lounge application. If you experience any problems using the app, please get in contact and we will help you out. If you are interested in the Holiday Club program but are not yet enrolled with us, contact us using the information below for further details – we’d love for you to be involved too!

On each day of the holidays that you attend our service, please ensure your child has: sun-safe summer clothing, a packed lunch, appropriate footwear, a brimmed hat, a change of clothes, and a water bottle. We recommend putting an ice pack in your child’s lunch and labelling all of your items so if some get misplaced (as they always do) we’ll be able to return them to you with no dramas.

Just a reminder that 2021 enrolments for returning families must be completed by the 18th of December. If we will not be seeing you on the holidays, the team here at the Y wish you a very Merry Christmas! Stay safe on your adventures and we will see you in the new year.

Our Program

In response to student interest, we had a fantasy themed week last week where we did a range of activities about fairies, dragons, and other mystical creatures. The younger children in particular loved all of the fairy activities (such as making cardboard tube fairies), while the older children participated in ‘Seniors Only’ crafts where they created more complex things from Harry Potter including Mandrakes, hair bows, and Bowtruckles. Look how fantastic they turned out!

The children have been asking to do some Christmas crafts over this past fortnight. While we would normally think it’s a bit early to start this, it’s 2020 and we all need something to look forward to this year… so we’ll be starting some Christmas activities this week! If you do not celebrate Christmas and would not like your child involved in these activities, please let us know.

Important Reminders

If you require any more information about our services, please email [email protected] or call us on 3343 8244 or 0419 522 663. You can also pop in to see us at the service, located in A Block. It’s the room with the red doors next to the teacher car park area!
