Cybersecurity Attacks
January 2012 | Postbank lost R 30 million in a high tech heist by cybercrime syndicate within-depth knowledge of the Postbank IT systems.
June 2016 | Standard Bank South Africa lost 300m through ATM fraud coordinated fraudincident by a Japanese cyber criminal syndicate.
July 2016 | Armscor website was hacked and lost a part of their supply database. The recordsallegedly included ordering and payment details for companies like Denel, Airbus, Thales andRolls-Royce. The hackers claimed to have access to nearly 20,000 supplier names, IDs, namesand passwords.
July 2016 | SABC website, as well as websites linked to the Gupta family, was hacked byAnonymous Africa saying they were targeting corrupt governments.
2016 | University of Limpopo. They published data containing exam and intranet files, thepersonal data of 16,000 university students, as well as the personal information contained insome 1,700 department faculty entries.
Cybersecurity Attacks
Dec 2016 and 2017 | KFC’s customer data were leaked. Hackers broke into the KFC loyaltygaining access to the information of 1.2 million KFC loyalty members. Also, KFC disgruntledemployee who made sure that 1 in 3 transactions didn’t go through which meant thatthousands of people got free chicken and KFC lost out on 30% of their revenue till theydiscovered the problem.
2017 | Old Mutual customer data breach. The company detected an unauthorised entry andpersonal information of customers in South Africa was obtained including ‘customers’ name,telephone number and some investment values’.
June 2017 | Buffalo City Municipality and Eastern Cape Education Department somehowmanaged to upset an Islamic activist organisation who defaced their websites - both of theirsites.
October 2019 | City of Johannesburg reported a breach of its network and shut down itswebsite and all e-services, hours after receiving a bitcoin ransom note from a group calledthe Shadow Kill Hackers.
