Problem Statement

Create an all-encompassing mobile app for medical residents in all specialities and fields, that gives them the option to complete a few hours of their shift, digitally.

ReduceBy digitally interacting with the public, this limits the need to make a trip to a hospital or Urgent Care if they don’t have to while reducing the amount of physical patients and paperwork.

AccessThe goal of this mobile application is to not only reduce stress and possible health complications for students in residency programs, but to make communicating with a doctor easy and convienent from the comfort of the general publics’ home.

CreditUMBRELLA aims to keep medical residents mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy by giving them an alternative option to supplement some of their required hours on this application.

Medical residents are continiously pushed to their limits. Not only are the long hours affecting the residents, but their personal relationships, and their patients safety. Fatigue in any job will lead to errors, some bigger than others, especially in the medical field.

Mayo ClinicThis app from MayoClinic allows users to request an appointment with experts in top-ranked specialties, access to health news and practical advice. Users are able to message the Mayo Clinic team as well as view test results.

This app is used to look up drug information, catch up on medical news, view drug pricing and the history of medical conditions.

There is no fee, nor a premium fee. A user has to make an account to access the given information.

User Scenario: Ashley

Ashley just completed her third shift of the week, with one more to go. Although she enjoys helping her patients get better and walking them through treatments, the stress of being active for for so many hours, is starting to take a toll on her back, and because of her pain, it’s hard to sleep at night.

Her supervisor suggests using UMBRELLA to refrain from being on her feet for so long, but still be able to help patients. Ashley creates an account through her medical center during her lunch hour and starts scrolling through posts. She comes across an interesting post, and after swiping through the photos, she immediately knows what is wrong. After commenting, she returns to the newsfeed and begins scrolling once more, this time coming across a very concerning looking lesion. Worried for this patients safety, she clicks on the post, and sends this user a list of the closest medical centers near them.

User Scenario: Daniel

Daniel’s supervisor has given him and other medical residents the option to complete a few hours of their shifts on UMBRELLA. When residents make an account, they are able to track their hours and archive patients they have helped. After scrolling through posts and photos, he finds this to be easier than working face-to-face with a patient for 10 minutes versus answering 2 or 3 users in 10 minutes. Within an hour, he helped 7 different users with their concerns. Daniel is solving patients medical cu-riosities or pointing them in the right direction twice as fast as in-person visits with a higher satisfaction rate. Going into his second hour, he comes across a user whose post and photos baffle him. He spends another 30 minutes looking into this, and before he knows it, his shift is up. Daniel starts to worry he hasn’t met his personal quota of patients for the day, but after reviewing his Time and Patient Tracker, he realizes he has put in the needed hours. Daniels mood and performance have greatly improved since using this app a few times a week; his co-workers and especially Elisa have noticed a huge difference.

User Experience Goals

• Reduce the stress in the standard medical environment by providing an online alternative.

• Increase Medical Resident morale. Increase confidence in online doctors.

• Easy, concise ways to answer patients medical concerns while still fulfilling their medical residency requirements.

Design Direction

As a medical resident, it is hard to find time to breathe and collect your thoughts. In order to reduce the stress in the standard medical environment for a medical resident, UMBRELLA uses mint green to reflect medical scrubs and gloves, while also evoking a positive and relaxing environment. An intuitive layout with simple affordances and consisting of only pages of importance reduces the amount of time needed to learn this application and distraction. Infinite scrolling mimics the popular way to view different posts from users with a simple movement, as well as swiping through photos. In addition, the simple layout and affordances will make it easier for the general public to post and upload their own cases without intimidation or judgment from a waiting room.
