This weekend the UMBC Indoor Track and Field teams will take to the track after spending the entire fall training for the upcoming season. However, with the bulk of the competitive season found after the winter holidays, fans will have to settle for a small glimpse of what the season will entail with many athletes sitting out the meet entirely or running in events that stray from their main focus. But fear not, many of the new faces to the program will be in competition along with many athletes who should factor into the scoring at the America East Championships. In the sprint events, the Retrievers will be bringing out all their new faces, both freshmen and transfers alike with many of the fireworks coming from the 60 meter dash. On the women’s side, sophomore D’Nique Phillips will lead a young crop of women who could make an impact in their first year in Mercedes Tillman and Nailah Johnson. For the men, with senior Denny Long not available during the indoor season, transfer Randolph Patrice will join with veteran Kyle Baker and freshmen Afees Abolurin and Tyler Ford to try to make up the point gap. The longer sprints will feature conference scorers Kalane Abbey and Briana Young stepping up a bit in distance in the 500 meters while Niko Coaxum will hope to build on his Conference experiences from last year while being the veteran among a large group of newcomers that will be on display in the 400 meters and 500 meters. With a bulk of the distance group actively recovering from the cross country season, most of the emphasis will be on the mid-distance events. Charles Bolinger, who finished eighth in the Conference as a freshman and qualified for the IC4A championships returns, coupled with freshman Rami Phillips could set the early pace in the Conference in the 800 meters. In the mile, look towards Andrew Keresztes, the Outdoor Conference Champion in the 800 meters, to make a mark. For the women, the trio of sophomores Essence Fredericks and Lynne Deckel, along with freshman Elise Allen will represent in the 800 meters, while MK Kulp, fourth in the America East 1000 meters, will work with 1500 meter finalist Angelina Oputa to set a quick pace in the mile. In the field events, three time indoor IC4A qualifier in the high jump, Mo Drammeh will be the veteran influence amongst the field events along with senior Sean Kshmetski in the Pole Vault. Helping with the point generation will be junior Thor Serafenas, who will challenge for the Conference title in the weight throw and a podium spot in the shot put, and Ray Stinsman who will be aiming for All Conference in both events. For the women, Emma Mayne, Nneoma Edokobi, and Jen Nelson will enter the shot put circle a year after all three scored at the Conference meet in that event. Filling out the depth in the jumping events will be the duo of Alisha Beeman and Abigale Slonski, who will both be in contention for the Pentathlon Conference title at the America East Championships 2013-14 Indoor Schedule: December 7th, 2013 Bison Opener Bucknell University January 11th, 2014 Penn State Relays Penn State University January 18th, 2014 Terrapin Invite PGSLC January 24th, 2014 NYC Team Challenge NYC Armory January 25th, 2014 Patriot Games George Mason Invite Jan. 31st- Feb. 1st, 2014 Penn State National Invite Penn State University February 7th-8th, 2014 Armory Collegiate Invite NYC Armory February 14th, 2014 Rider/Lafayette Invite NYC Armory February 23rd-24th, 2014 America East Championships NYC Armory March 8th-9th, 2014 IC4A/ECAC Championships Boston University March 14th-15th, 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships Albuquerque, NM Outdoor Track: • 10 school records broken: Mercedes Jackson – 100m & 200m, Paulette Fogle – 400mH, Trae Proctor – 110mH, Jake Albino – 1500m, Yao Adantor – Shot Put, Thor Serafenas – Hammer, Vincent Rentzsch – Javelin, Women’s 4x200m Relay, Women’s 4x400m Relay • Overall the Men had 8 Conference Champions (Denny Long – 100m & 200m, Andrew Keresztes – 800m, Hassan Omar – 10,000m, Trae Proctor – 110mH, Vincent Rentzsch – Javelin & Decathlon, Men’s 4x100m Relay) • Overall the Women had 4 Conference Champions (Mercedes Jackson – 100m & 200m, Amanda Deller – Shot Put & Discus Throw • Denny Long won Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete and the Coaches’ Award (Most Points Scored), Amanda Deller won Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete and Coaches’ Award, Mercedes Jackson won Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete, Vincent Rentzsch won Most Outstanding Male Rookie, and the coaching staff won Male Coaching Staff of the Year Award Mercedes Jackson and Vincent Rentzsch advanced to the NCAA Champs. “Range” in the track and field world represents the ability to be

successful at a variety of events over a fairly large spectrum of distances. It’s something that

sophomore D’Nique Phillip put on display freshmen year, when she

became the only Retriever to have Top Ten All Time Performances in the 60m, 200m, and 400m dashes. Not to mention lending a leg on the

91 The total number of performances during indoor

and outdoor track last year that ranked in the Top 10 Performances All-Time in UMBC Track and

Field history. Does not include performances that were set then bumped or multiple performances in one event by the same person. Full list at end.

As a freshman, Andrew Keresztes quietly put together one of the strongest years in the history of UMBC. During the indoor campaign, Keresztes, made quick strides to adjust to the rougher mid-distance racing found at the collegiate level to finish second in the 1,000 meter run at the America East Conference meet while lending a leg on the DMR and Conference Champion 4x800 meter relay. He continued his success at the IC4A Championships advancing to the finals with the second fastest 1,000 meter run in school history. Outdoors, he continued his success in the 800 meters, running the second fastest time in school history and won the America East Title in the event, while advancing to the IC4A Championships.

Athlete spotlights

While departed senior Amanda Deller was in the headlines much of the last four years, Nneoma Edokobi was having a highly successful year in the shadows, especially for a freshman. During indoors, she finished third in the shot put at the America East Championships to earn All-Conference honors while following that up with seventh place finish in the weight throw. In both events she recorded Top Ten All Time Marks for UMBC. In outdoors she finished fourth in the outdoor shot put at the America East Championships while recording another Top 10 All Time Mark. With a summer of training under her belt, look for a big jump in the shot put due to strength training and potentially bigger jumps in the weight throw in her second year in the event working on technique.
