Mount st. mary’s duals The men’s and women’s cross country teams open up their season this Friday taking part in the Mount St. Mary’s duals whose field will include Mount St. Mary’s, Maryland, Navy, American, Towson, Delaware, and Morgan State. The Duals have in the past been the traditional opening meet for the Retrievers, but UMBC has not attended the meet for the past two years. A flat course in what appears to be ideal conditions should make for some fast marks right off the line. With some major losses from the Conference team, the Retrievers return two of their top three from the Conference meet. Hassan Omar finished third last year and will look to become the first UMBC athlete to win an individual conference title in cross country. Top 15 performer Austin Hayslett will look to improve upon his break out season as a sophomore and should challenge for a Top 10 finish. Adding to the team will be former Top 15 performer in senior Eric Schuler and duo of sophomores in Pat Duboyce and Jon Luckin. After only losing two athletes from last year, the women looked poise to improve upon their fifth place finish from a year ago. Top runner honors might be a committee with Nicole Dawson, Sarah Daly, and Katie Govatos leading the way. Dawson and Daly were top three runners from a year ago while Govatos was red shirting and will be running cross country for the first time ever. School record holder in the steeple Sophia Cologer along with veterans Julie Gessler, MK Kulp and Angelina Oputa will had depth after successful years in spring.
