Downhill corners are most dangerous

A combination of downhill slopes and corners is the most dangerous for riders, according to one of the most comprehensive motorcycle crash studies in the past 35 years.

The study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute for the American Motorcycle Safety Foundation used 100 riders with five video cameras on their bikes for several months and over half a million kilometres.

It produced a lot of data which is still being processed and analysed.

The Virginia Tech study is the first major crash survey since the comprehensive and often-quoted Hurt Report of 1981.

Obviously motorcycles have changed a lot since then. They are lighter and more powerful, have better tyres and handling and many have rider tech aids such as ABS, traction control, etc.

We have already looked at some of the findings of the Virginia Tech study.

But there is one important aspect we wanted to investigate further.

We knew that corners were a danger for riders, increasing the likelihood of a crash or incident by two.

However, the report says that if it’s downhill it increases the risk by four.

Why are downhill corners risky?

It is most likely because riders are not using their brakes correctly.

When you brake for a corner, the weight shifts forward and compresses the forks.

This is even more pronounced if the corner is downhill as you have to brake harder to counteract gravity and there is already more weight over the front wheel.

With the springs compressed, the forks cannot deal with surface irregularities as fast or efficiently as they can when they are in their normal position.

If riders hold their front brakes through a downhill corner and hit a bump or have to readjust their line, the bike cannot react or steer properly.

It’s a reminder that we should get all of our front braking out of the way before entering any corner.

Some riders still prefer to hold a bit of rear braking through a corner, but never front brakes.

And remember the word of world champion driver Stirling Moss: “It is better to go into a corner slow and come out fast, than to go in fast and come out dead.”

Leader August 16th 2017 Last week’s Wednesday ride was a wash out – literally. Saturday Meet and Greet was sparsely attended as half a dozen had gone to The Aircraft Museum in Temora. It was a great day out and the Museum put on a terrific flying display as they always do. Six members from Albury/Wodonga came up for the day as did a small contingent from Wollongong. The Wollongong members stayed overnight in a Motel and returned home on Sunday. They did make comment on the cold weather, and yes, it was a very cool day not overly conducive to riding motorcycles or driving sports cars for that matter.

At our Branch meeting last week Mary Smith took over the role of Branch Secretary and we wish her well in that demanding position. Trevor Bates is President and Elaine Scott Treasurer.

Our next trip takes off today for an overnight stay at the Rabbit Trap Hotel in Albert up there in the north of the State. We have 8 starters who have put their names down to brave the cold. The next ride is on September 3rd which will take us in the hills Tumbarumba, Corryong and Jingellic way. Please note that this ride will depart McDonalds at 9:00am as will all of the Spring, Summer and Autumn Journeys At this stage you should have booked your accommodation at Jerilderie for the Tri Branch weekend on September 8th 9th and 10th .

You have seen us – riding out on the road wearing our “Old Man Logo” having a great time with our friends, grow-ing old disgracefully!

I guess you have wondered who we are and what we represent?

This great club - the Ulysses Club - was formed in December 1983, from a meeting of five people at the Elizabeth Hotel in Sydney. Stephen Dearnley, who was known fondly as Old Number 1, was one of those five members, and with others, they adopted a draught constitution and laid down three basic purposes of the Club, which are:

1. To provide ways in which older motorcyclists can get together for companionship and Mutual support.

2. To show by example that motorcycling can be an enjoyable and practical activity for riders of all ages.

3. To draw the attention of public and private institutions to the needs and views of older riders.

The Ulysses Club is not so much a motorcycle club, but a social club for older motorcyclists. With around 18000 paid up members, branches in every state and territory, and clubs overseas, we have come a long way since those early days. Our annual general meeting is held in a different place each year, with the week prior to the AGM itself being an event filled week for Ulysses Club members who either camp on site or stay in Motel or private accommodation in the town.

Our logo is a representation of an “old man” and our logo is “Growing old disgracefully”. As a junior member at 40 (the youngest age at which you may join), and with plenty of rides, social events, more rides, rallies and Odysseys to attend what other reason do you need to join?

Leader August 30th 2017 Well what a hoot the trip up north to Albert turned out to be. Seven of us left Billy’s at 9:30am last Wednesday and trekked across to Coolamon, then Ardlethan and Barellan where Gary peeled off and went back to home base to attend to some important task. The rest of us continued on and arrived in Weethalle where we took a look at the murals that have recently been painted on the Silos. We also had lunch and fuelled up before continuing on to Tullibigeal and Condobolin where we fuelled up again and had a nice hot cuppa and some snacks. From Condobolin the next whistle stops were Fifield and Tullamore before we got onto the road to Albert, 3Ks to the right on the Trangie Road. The ‘Rabbit Trap Hotel’ at Albert is legendry and the accommodation was first class in miner’s cabins that have reached their use by date. The cabins are completely self-contained, clean and warm. We had tea at the pub after a couple of cleans-ing ales with the meals being top quality and humungus, even big Trev nearly choked on his T-Bone. Smithy had a small drama with his bike where the tail end snapped off so with a few straps to tie it all together he managed to ride back home while Gerhard carried his gearsack on his bike.

Next day we didn’t get the promised breakfast because, I believe, the Cook (Chef) slept in. It didn’t matter though as we headed off toward Forbes and stopped on the way at Tullamore and had a feed there. And the next stop was Trundle where Woody had to refuel his Jam-Tin tank. Travelling on through Bogan Gate we finally reached Forbes and stopped off at the Motor Museum where we had a bite to eat and three of our number, Trev, Gerhard and Woody had a look through the Museum before they continued home through Quandialla and Temora. The other three, Smithy, Don and Pat, who had already recently seen the museum went straight home down the Newell to Wyalong and Temora, arriving home at about 3:15pm. I think the temperature managed to get to about 11 degrees over the 2 days so it was a little fresh. A great trip in good company, we must do it again sometime.

Saturday Meet and Greet saw a good roll up at Billy’s for the weekly chit chat over a nice hot drink and some muffins. Nothing was scheduled for Sunday and the weather started off being a bit wet and cold but improved as the day wore on, so I am not sure if anyone went for a spin. Our next tour is this coming Sunday (3rd) and will take us up into the hills around Tumbarumba, Corryong, and Jingellic. Please note that all rides from now on will depart from their respective starts at 9:00am and will continue starting at this time up until the end of May next year. Traditionally Sunday Rides leave from McDonalds Edward Street Car Park and Wednesday Rides leave from Billy’s Café in Gurwood Street. The next excursion is the Tri Branch weekend at Jerilderie on the 8th 9th and 10th September. If you haven’t booked in yet you had better get a wriggle on. The Phone number for the Jerilderie Motel/Caravan Park is 03 5886 1366 and the address is 121 Newell Highway 2716. Note the phone number is prefixed 03 even though the town is in NSW. And that is it folks, with our next Branch meeting on the 19th of September. Have fun in the sun – we should start to see a bit with the onset of Spring.

Leader September 6th 2017 I think some of the old codgers are getting a bit soft, last week nine turned up at Billy’s for the Wednesday run but it was too cold?? However a couple of the more adventurous thought it over and went home to get their bikes for a short squirt to somewhere. As it turned out the day improved considerably as time went on.

The usual gathering at Meet and Greet on Saturday morning was well attended and the affairs of the World were dis-cussed and solved.

Well the run to Corryong was on Sunday and 5 members started out on the venture. Up to Tumbarumba via Westbrook Rd for the first stop where the weather looked a bit threatening. 2 members had some prior arrangements so they departed from Tumba. The remaining members agreed to take a short cut on the day and head to Jingellic for lunch but due to the short spin across the top of the hills we were early for lunch so off we went to Holbrook. Arriving in Holbrook the weather had improved and after fuel and food we headed off back to Wagga. not a huge amount of K's travelled but a good day in all.

Our next adventure is to Jerilderie for the Tri Branch weekend this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you want some further info on the weekend give Jackie Starr a call on 0413 305 753.

Leader September 13th 2017 You would think that Spring and nice weather would go hand in hand but, no, last Wednesday and six days into Spring the winter weather was still with us so no ride eventuated that day.

From all reports, the Jerilderie weekend was enjoyed by all who made the grade. Meet and Greet on Friday night was most enjoyable with each person supplying their own meat and our wonderful girls who specialise in the catering side of things provided the side dishes and salads etc.

On Saturday morning, some went exploring the relics and historic places of the town while one or two rode over to De-niliquin to check out a truck show there. The rest of Saturday was taken up with exploring, lunches, and cups of coffee with the day being capped by a great dinner at a The Colony Motor Inn. On Sunday, everyone arose to a sumptuous breakfast of bacon and eggs followed by some hot coffee before packing up for the ride home. Another good trip away.

Up-coming events are a short local ride taking in Uranquinty, the crossroads and Currawarna on September 17th. On the 28th and the 29th The Toy Run Committee have got the Bunnings’ barbecue and are looking for helpers on each day. If you can help please give Pat a call on 0408 420 766. On the 1st of October, we are having a run to Rutherglen and this may turn into an overnighter depending on interest. On the 7th The 2017 Toy Run Launch will take place at Thomas Bros from 9:00am until 1:00pm. Come and enjoy a sausage sandwich and bring you bike all shined up. And on the 15th it will be The Pink Ribbon Ride, more later.

Just a reminder that all weekend rides leave McDonalds Car Park, in Edward Street, at 9:00am and Wednesday rides leave Billy’s Café at 9:00am. Meet and Greet is conducted at Billy’s on Saturday mornings from 10:00am. If you are not a mem-ber of the Ulysses Club and would like to join us on a ride, you are most welcome.
