At the top of Australia lies the Northern Territory,

with Darwin as its Capital. The most famous fea-

ture lying in this territory is the giant sandstone

monolith Uluru or Ayers Rock. In 1993 a policy was

adopted that allowed both names (the English

name Ayers Rock and the traditional Aboriginal

name Uluru). Uluru is called the “Heart of Australia” because of its place right

in the middle of the continent.

The monolith in Uluru National Park is a beautiful example of the other-world-

ly beauty in Australia. With it’s dark orange coloring, fantastical shape and

massive size, Uluru looks like it would be right at home on Mars.

Supplies:

Acrylic paint (red, yellow, orange, green)

Paintbrushes

White paper (2 sheets per person)

Scrapbook or craft paper (black or blue)

Glue sticks

Markers or pens for detail

Cut each sheet of white paper in half. Paint each half sheet a different color

(red, yellow, orange, green).

Once it has dried, start with the yellow paper and rip it into long strips.

Layer the strips horizontally and glue them onto the black or blue paper to

make the grasslands. Next, rip the red and orange paper into thin strips ap-

proximately two to three inches tall.

Layer them vertically and glue, alternating between red and orange to create

Uluru.

Using the green paper, rip random shapes to make trees and glue those onto

the yellow section. Use the pen to create trunks (and rocks and snakes).

If you used black paper for your background, rip up little bits of white paper

and glue those down for stars. If you used blue, you can make clouds, and use

some leftover yellow paper for the sun.
