DescriptionTheUV-C50SanitizerSystemdescribedinthismanualisdesignedtoprovidethebenefitsofUVtreatedwaterinanenvironmentallysafeandeffectivemanner.Thehighquality,speciallyengineeredcomponentsensureefficientwatersanitizationoutputandreliableperformance.TheUV-C50includestwogermicidalUVlampstunedto254nm,andissafeandharmlesstoyourequipmentandbatherswheninstalledproperly.

2A. Pool PreparationToachieveoptimalperformancefromtheUV-C50system,thepoolshouldbecleanedpriortoinstallation.
1. BackwashorcleanfiltersonedaybeforestartingtheUV-C50.2. Superchlorinatepoolwaterusingachlorinebasedshock
treatmentsothewaterhasasustained1-3ppmfreechlorinelevel.
3. TestpoolchemistryandadjustpHbetween7.4and7.6.Adjusttotalalkalinitybetween80and120ppm.
4. Runpoolfiltrationcontinuouslyfor24hourspriortostartingtheUV-C50.
2B. Location TheUV-C50isdesignedforfloormounting.Locatetheunitinaclean,protectedarea,eitherindoorsoroutdoors(preferablyoutofdirectsunlight).Ifpossible,locatetheunitoutofreachofsprinklersordrainagespouts.Allowsufficientaccessformaintenance(3ftclearanceaboveand1ftaroundtheunit),plumbingandelectricalhookups.
2C. MountingUsethefour(4)mountingholesprovidedinthebaseoftheUV-C50tosecureitontoasolid,levelsurface.

2D. PlumbingUseasize2PhillipsscrewdrivertoloosenthetwoAccessScrewsontheAccessCover.LifttheAccessCoverandtiltitovertoexposethePower,PressureSwitchandLampConnectors.WhileholdingtheCover,disconnectalloftheconnectors(4total).SettheAccessCoveraside.
TheUV-C50caneasilybeaddedintothepool’splumbingloop.Simplyconnectthewaterinletandoutletintothepool’sreturnline.ItisadvisedthatyouplumbtheUV-C50beforetheheater.Bypassvalvesarerecommendedforwinterization.
2D-1. Plumbing the UV-C 50
TheUV-C50mustbeinstalledinthepool’smainreturnlineafterthefilter,preferablybeforetheheaterandanychlorinefeedersorchlorinegenerators.RefertoFigure 2 foravarietyofinstallationconfigurations
TheUV-C50willcomewithonehalfofaunionfittinginstalledontheInletandOutlet,theotherhalfofthefittingswillbelocatedinthepartsbag.UsetheunionfittingsprovidedtoconnecttheUV-C50inletandoutlettoyourpool’splumbingasshowninFigure 2.
NOTE:IftheUV-C50isinstalledbelowwaterlevel,aFlowSwitchKitisrequiredtoensurethesystemdoesnotturnonwithoutadequateflow.ContactCustomerService(seeSECTION 6)toorderthekit.
2D-2. Leak Test
Onceallplumbingconnectionsarecompleteandgluehasproperlycured,startthecirculationsystemandrunathighestnormaloperatingpressure.Checkforleaksatallexternalconnections,andinsidetheUV-C50housingneartheQuartzTubeseals.RepairleaksasneededbeforeproceedingtoSECTION 2E.Electrical.IfleakspersistattheunionconnectorsorattheQuartzTubeseals,contactCustomerService(seeSECTION 6)
Whenplumbingiscomplete,turnoffcirculationsystemandrelievepressurefromthesystem.

ConnecttheUV-C50tothepooltimingclocksothattheUV-C50operatessimultaneouslywiththepoolpump.
RunservicewirefromthepooltimerintotheUV-C50WiringHousing.Useappropriatefittingsasneededtomeetlocalcoderequirements(forexample,asshowninFigure 3).ConnecttheservicewirestotheloosewiresonthePowerConnectorharness:
• BlacktoLine1• WhitetoNeutralorLine2• Greentoground
Oncetheservicewiresareconnectedtotheharnesswires,disconnectthePowerharnessattheprovidedlockingconnector.

IftheUV-C50isinstalledbelowwaterlevel,aFlowSwitchKitisrequiredtoensurethesystemdoesnotturnonwithoutadequateflow.ContactCustomerService(seeSECTION 6)toorderthekit.
2E-3. Reinstall The Access Cover
ReconnectalllockingconnectorsandinstalltheAccessCover.EnsurethattheCoverAlignmentKeyisproperlyalignedwiththematingfeatureontheUV-C50Housing.
3A. Initial System Start-UpUponcompletingallofthesystemconnectionsandcleaningthepoolasoutlinedinSECTION 2,youarereadytostarttheUV-C50.
1. Turnonthepoolcirculationsystem.2. VerifythatthegreenPowerIndicatorislit.3. LookthroughtheclearGlowRingintheHousingandverifythat
bothUVLampsaresteadilylit.Theyshouldnotflickerorturnoffwhilethesystemisoperating.
4. TurnoffthepoolcirculationsystemandverifythattheUVLampsarenolongerlit.
5. Systemisnowreadyfornormaloperation.
3B. Normal OperationIndicator Lights:Whenthepool’scirculationsystemstarts,theUV-C50willpowerupandthegreenindicatorlightontheaccesscoverwillpoweron.
Glow Ring:Theglowring,locatedbelowtheAccessCoverwilllightupwhentheUVbulbsareactiveThisprovidesvisualconfirmationthatthebulbsareworking.
NOTE:Correspondingglowdoesnotindicatefullintensity.Alwaysreplacebulbsafter18months.

3C. System Shut-DownThefollowingsequenceofstepsmustbefollowedforservicingorforstorage.
1. Shutoffpoweratthebreaker.2. Closeby-passvalvesifbelowwaterlevel.3. Disconnectallelectrical,plumbingandmountingconnections
3D. WinterizingIfthepoolwillbeshuttingdownforthewintermonthsandtheUV-C50willremainexposedtofreezingtemperatures,theunitmustbedrainedtopreventfreezedamagetothewettedcomponents.TodraintheUV-C50,seethefollowingsteps.
1. IftheUV-C50ismountedbelowthewaterlevel,bypassvalvesmustallbeCLOSEDtopreventexcesswaterfromdrainingintotheunit.
2. LocatetheDrainValve(RefertoFigure 1),removethecap,andopenvalvetocompletelydrainthewaterfromtheUV-C50.Ifnecessary,loosenthetopunionfitting(wateroutlet)tofacilitatedraining.
3. AllowallthewatertodrainfromtheUV-C50beforeclosingtheDrainValve.
3E. Water ChemistryRegularwaterchemistrytestingshouldbeperformedasusual.Maintainachlorineresidualof1–3ppmfreechlorine,pHbetween7.4and7.6,andtotalalkalinitybetween80and120ppm.

4A-1. Removing Access Cover
TheUV-C50maybeservicedwithoutdisconnectinganyoftheplumbingorwiring.SimplyuseaPhillipsscrewdrivertoloosenthetwoscrewsandremovetheAccessCover.DisconnectfourelectricalconnectorsandsettheAccessCoveraside.
4A-2. UV Chamber Service and Maintenance
TheUVLampsarehousedinaQuartzTube.IftheQuartzTubebecomesdirty,itsabilitytotransmitUVraysfromtheLampwillbediminished.TheQuartzTube(s)shouldberemovedfromtheUVChambereverysix(6)monthsandcleanedifnecessary.
4A-3. Lamp Removal
NOTE:DONOTTOUCHTHEUVLAMPGLASSWITHYOURBAREHANDS.OilsonyourhandscancausehotspotsontheUVLampandshortenitslife.UseasoftcleancottonclothorcleancottonglovestohandletheUVLamp.
1. GrasptheUVLampwiresandgentlypulltoremovethelampfromthetube.
2. CarefullyplacetheUVLampinaclean,dry,andsafelocation.RepeatthisprocessfortheotherUVLamp.

4B. Quartz Tube Removal and CleaningNOTE: IftheUV-C50isinstalledbelowwaterlevel,thebypassvalvesmustbeCLOSEDtopreventpoolwaterfromdrainingthroughtheQuartzTubeconnection.
1. DrainthewaterfromtheUVChamber(SeeSECTION 3D).2. Verifythatthereisnopressureinthesystem.3. StandtothesideofunitwhenremovingtheAccessCover.DO
NOTplaceyourselforanythingabovethecoveruponremoval.4. Useawrenchorsockettoremovethecompressionnut.5. GrasptheQuartzTubefromthetopoftheUVChamberandpull
toremoveitfromtheUVChamber.6. RemovetheSealingWasherandRingfromthetopoftheQuartz
Tubeandsetasideinasafeplace.InspectconditionofSealingWasherandRingtoensuretheyareingoodshape.
7. CleantheQuartzTubeexteriorwithamildsolutionofmuriaticacid(availableatallpoolsupplystores)andwaterinaratiooffourpartswatertoonepartacid(4:1).
CAUTION Followthedirectionsforuseandhandlingofmuriaticacidontheacidbottlelabel.Protectyoureyes,wearrubbergloves,andavoidbreathingacidfumes.
NOTE:DONOTUSEABRASIVECLEANERSastheycanscratchthehighqualityquartzglass.AftercleaningtheQuartzTube,washitoffandwipedry.InspecttheQuartzTubeforcracks.Replaceifcracksarefound.MakesuretheinsideoftheQuartzTubeisdrybeforereplacingtheUVLamps.
NOTE: Damagescausedbybrokenquartztubesarenotcoveredunderyourlimitedwarranty.

4C. Quartz Tube Installation1. HoldtheQuartzTubeverticallyandinserttheQuartzTubeintothe
UVChamberuntilitisfullyseatedinthebottomoftheUVChamber.
NOTE:IftheendoftheQuartzTubeisprotrudingfromtheUVChamber,thealignmentisoff.Removeandre-inserttheQuartzTubetoseatitproperlyasshowninFigure 4.
2. Installthesealingringfollowedbythesteelsealingwasher.3. PlacetheCompressionNutovertheQuartzTube.Usea
wrenchorsockettoinstallthecompressionnut,andtorquetoapproximately15in-lbs.DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.TurnthecirculationpumpONandchecktheQuartzTubesealforleaks.
4. TurnthecirculationpumpOFFonceyouhaveconfirmedthattheQuartzTubeisnotleaking.
4D. Re-installing the UV Lamp(s)NOTE:MakesuretohandletheUVlampasdescribedinSECTION 4B.
1. TURNOFFYOURPUMPIFYOUHAVENOTDONESO.2. AllowUVLamptodropslowlyintotheQuartzTubeuntilitis
seatedintheLampCushioninthebottomofthetube.3. ConnecttheLampConnectors,PressureSwitchConnectorsand
