The Saad Centre for Radiography The University for business and the professions Ultrasound The innovative facilities at City University London’s Saad Centre for Radiography have opened up new ways of teaching and learning, helping to place City among the leaders in radiography education and research. There are seven specialised rooms in the Centre, each with state-of-the-art equipment. This advanced technology is available not only to our students, but also to other users for their own professional activities and projects. The ultrasound suite contains a real-time Siemens Sonoline Antares machine suitable for scanning a range of clinical cases. Additionally there is an Ultrasim simulator on which novices can learn basic ultrasound skills needed for clinical practice in a non-threatening environment. A selection of clinical cases can be accessed via the simulator to enhance exposure to a wide variety of pathologies for the more experienced practitioner. These facilities are available for use throughout the year providing access to such equipment away from the pressures of a hospital environment. The real-time machine is equipped with a curvilinear transducer (2 – 6 MHz) and a high frequency linear array transducer (5–10 MHz) for a range of scanning applications such as abdominal, thyroid, musculoskeletal and vascular. There are full colour, spectral and power Doppler, harmonic imaging facilities and extended field of view, in addition to the normal ultrasound controls, which can enhance the clinical examination or be utilised for the teaching of ultrasound physics. The machine can be used for scanning real subjects or for research, without the constraints faced when using machines in busy hospital departments. The simulator provides a range of training modules, each with clinical tasks and examples that include obstetrics, abdominal and gynaecological. An additional feature is the transvaginal probe, enabling the user to practice the transvaginal scanning technique in a relaxed setting, before undertaking actual patient examinations. All training modules have a broad range of cases and practice examples for the operator to work through either under supervision or independently, beginning with normal cases and advancing to more complex clinical pathology. Instructor guide books are available for each module. As well as using the equipment for the training of staff or students, the ultrasound suite can be used for other purposes such as teaching the principles of sound interactions and the manipulation of equipment parameters. Short courses, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), skills training, research and commercial activities can be carried out within the suite and the other facilities available within the Saad Centre. Current research includes the assessment of tongue movements during speech and the monitoring of nerve movement and flexibility in the arm.

The innovative facilities at City University London’s Saad Centre for Radiography have opened up new ways of teaching andlearning, helping to place City among the leaders in radiography education and research.

There are seven specialised rooms in the Centre, each with state-of-the-art equipment. This advanced technology isavailable not only to our students, but also to other users for their own professional activities and projects.

The ultrasound suite contains a real-time Siemens Sonoline Antares machine suitable for scanning a range of clinical cases.Additionally there is an Ultrasim simulator on which novices can learn basic ultrasound skills needed for clinical practice ina non-threatening environment. A selection of clinical cases can be accessed via the simulator to enhance exposure to a widevariety of pathologies for the more experienced practitioner. These facilities are available for use throughout the year providingaccess to such equipment away from the pressures of a hospital environment.

The real-time machine is equipped with a curvilinear transducer (2 – 6 MHz) and a high frequency linear array transducer(5–10 MHz) for a range of scanning applications such as abdominal, thyroid, musculoskeletal and vascular. There are fullcolour, spectral and power Doppler, harmonic imaging facilities and extended field of view, in addition to the normalultrasound controls, which can enhance the clinical examination or be utilised for the teaching of ultrasound physics. Themachine can be used for scanning real subjects or for research, without the constraints faced when using machines in busyhospital departments.

The simulator provides a range of training modules, each with clinical tasks and examples that include obstetrics, abdominal and gynaecological. An additional feature is the transvaginal probe, enabling the user to practice thetransvaginal scanning technique in a relaxed setting, before undertaking actual patient examinations. All training moduleshave a broad range of cases and practice examples for the operator to work through either under supervision orindependently, beginning with normal cases and advancing to more complex clinical pathology. Instructor guide books areavailable for each module.

As well as using the equipment for the training of staff or students, the ultrasound suite can be used for other purposessuch as teaching the principles of sound interactions and the manipulation of equipment parameters. Short courses,Continuing Professional Development (CPD), skills training, research and commercial activities can be carried out withinthe suite and the other facilities available within the Saad Centre. Current research includes the assessment of tonguemovements during speech and the monitoring of nerve movement and flexibility in the arm.
