Ultrasonic phased array technology

Feasibility study to determine the ‘gap

setting-X’ distance between the flange face

and the internal pipe

1

Phased array technology

Purpose of study

• To look at the use of ultrasonic phased array for inspection of Viking Johnson valve to determine the ‘GAP SETTING X’

• To ensure that the gap distance is between 25-50mm, as per Viking Johnson specification

2

Pipe that sits

inside the flanged

adapter

Equipment used

• Omniscan MX2 32:128

• Specialist probe

3

Phased Array Technology

4

Reason for inspection

• To measure the ‘GAP SETTING X’ shown on data sheet

4

Phased Array Technology

Technique

• A phased array inspection was performed using a ‘sectorial’ scan with the probe being manually moved adjacent and parallel to the inspected object. The ultrasonic response from the reflector can be measured by the Phased array equipment (see above dimension reference: RA)

Phased array probe scanning calibration block –’RA’=50mm standoff to plate edge

7

Phased Array Technology

Phased array probe scanning calibration block –’RA’=100mm standoff to plate edge

Phased array probe deployment location on Viking Johnson valve ‘Inlet Main’ 104

10

Distance from Phased Array probe to flange face = 142mm

Distance from Phased Array probe to pipe end (RA)=-119mm

Gap Setting ‘X’ = 23mm

Phased array probe deployment location on Viking Johnson valve ‘Inlet Main’ 105

Distance from Phased Array probe to flange face = 136mm

Distance from Phased Array probe to pipe end (RA)=-108mm

Gap Setting ‘X’ = 28mm

Phased Array Technology

• The ultrasonic phased array inspection technique was successfully

applied to the Viking Johnson valve to check the ‘gap setting X’

• The objective of this feasibility study was to assist in knowing the

actual gap setting ‘X’ before attempting to slide the pipe work into the

flange void ‘X’. Phased Array distance results above has made the

survey worthwhile
