MP Ghazi Al Rahma has presented a bill to impose

monthly fees not exceeding BD50 on non-Bahrainis who are holding driving licenses and those who own more than one vehicle.

The proposal is aimed at reducing traffic jams, encourage expats to use public transportation, combat the

phenomenon of illegal taxis and increase the revenues of the state, he told DT News yesterday.

The import ban on some Egyptian agricultural

products is expected to be lifted in the next few days, according to Egyptian Agriculture Minister Abdulmoneim Al

Banna. Al Banna confirmed in recent statements the temporary lifting of the ban on Egyptian agricultural exports of peppers, lettuce, guava and onions to Kuwait and Bahrain.

“An Egyptian Agriculture Ministry delegation held a number of meetings in Kuwait and Bahrain, during which

the Egyptian new control system on pesticide residue in agricultural crops has been displayed,” Egyptian daily, Al Masry Al Youm, quoted the minister as saying on Friday.

“Bahraini officials agreed on the lifting of the ban after the meetings starting Thursday, while Kuwaiti officials agreed

on lifting the ban temporarily for three months during which Egyptian agricultural exports will be examined of pesticide residues,” Al Banna said.

DT News had reported earlier that a ban on importing vegetables and fruits from certain countries in the region was imposed last April.

Agriculture and Marine Resources Affairs in Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry announced back then that the ban includes Lebanon, Jordan, Oman, Egypt and Yemen.

The ban came within several precautionary steps taken by the Kingdom to ensure the safety of food products, after the uncertainty of the agricultural pesticides used in these countries, with the possibility of them having higher levels of the standards approved by the constitution of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The mini s t ry ’ s announcement precisely mentioned that the import of chilli pepper and capsicum from Egypt, Apple from

Lebanon, chilli, capsicum, cabbage, lettuce, cornflower and eggplant from Jordan and sweet melon, carrot and rocca from Oman and all fruits from Yemen have been banned until further notice.

No statements were made yet by the authorities here regarding the lifting of the ban.

But Agriculture and Marine Resources Affairs Undersecretary Shaikh Khalifa bin Isa Al Khalifa confirmed to an Arabic daily yesterday that the ban will be lifted soon.

Xi Jinping delivered a report to the opening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Wednesday. The following are the highlights of the report: A NEW ERA WITH NEW THOUGHTSocialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era.The CPC has given shape to the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, a long-term guide to action that the Party must adhere to and develop. The Thought builds on and further enriches Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Theory of Three Represents, and the Scientific Outlook on Development. It represents the latest achievement in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context.

GREAT MODERN SOCIALIST COUNTRYThe CPC has drawn up a two-stage development plan for the period from 2020 to the middle of the 21st century to develop China into a «great modern socialist country.»In the first stage from 2020 to 2035, the CPC will build on the foundation created by the moder-ately prosperous society with a further 15 years of hard work to see that socialist modernization is basically realized. In the second stage from 2035 to the middle of the 21st century, the CPC will, building on having basically achieved modernization, work hard for a further 15 years and develop China into a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and beautiful. The principal contradiction facing Chinese society has evolved to be that between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people›s ever-growing needs for a better life. Now the needs to be met for the people to live a better life are increasingly broad. Not only have their material and cultural needs grown, their demands for democracy, rule of law, fairness and justice, security, and a better environment are increasing.

ECONOMYChina›s economy has been transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a stage of high-quality development. In developing a modernized economy, the country must focus on the real economy. China will support state capital in becoming stronger, doing better, and growing bigger, turn Chinese enter-prises into world-class, globally competitive firms.China will leverage the fundamental role of consumption in promoting economic growth and improve the framework of regulation underpinned by monetary policy and macro-prudential policy, and see that interest rates and exchange rates become more market-based. OPENING UPChina will not close its door to the world; it will only become more and more open.China will implement the system of pre-establishment national treatment plus a negative list across the board.China will significantly ease market access and protect the legitimate rights and interests of foreign investors.

LAWThe CPC will set up a central leading group for advancing law-based governance in all areas. It will strengthen oversight to ensure compliance with the Constitution, advance constitutionality review, and safeguard the authority of the Constitution.

ECOLOGICAL PROGRESSThe CPC has incorporated Beautiful China into its two-stage development plan for building a great modern socialist country. The modernization is one characterized by harmonious coexistence between man and nature.China will establish regulatory agencies to manage state-owned natural resource assets and moni-tor natural ecosystems, and develop a nature reserves system composed mainly of national parks.

ARMED FORCESBy the year 2020, military mechanization will be basically achieved, with IT application coming a long way and strategic capabilities seeing a big improvement. The modernization of the national defense and armed forces should be basically completed by 2035.The people›s armed forces will be transformed into world-class military by the mid-21st century.

DIPLOMACYChina is committed to building a community with a shared future for mankind. No matter what stage of development it reaches, China will never seek hegemony or engage in expansion.China will never pursue development at the expense of other’s interests and China’s development does not pose a threat to any other country.China has actively developed global partnerships and expanded the convergence of interests with other countries.

PARTY BUILDINGHaving gained overwhelming momentum in its fight against corruption, the Party is determined to secure a sweeping victory over the greatest threat to the Party.

The Bahraini mother is still kept in the dark about what happened to

her daughter inside a private preschool in the Kingdom even after days passed since the incident took place.

Um Fatima asserts that her daughter (Fatima, 2) had her shoulder broken while inside a private nursery school in the Capital and that the staff members, principle and owner have been hiding the truth about what injured her daughter inside the school campus.

She told DT News yesterday that the school administration continues to deny that her daughter’s injury occurred inside the school and that they are still not cooperative with her.

The mother yesterday met with a specialist from Labour and Social Development Ministry, which is in charge of nursery schools in the Kingdom.

The meeting follows instructions issued by Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan to launch an immediate probe into the details of the incident and to coordinate with the relevant authorities including Education and Interior Ministries.

The ministry also announced that it is concerned about preserving children’s rights and safety within the ministry’s responsibility of supervising nursery schools. The ministry affirmed that it’s now investigating the matter and will take the necessary procedures against the school if negligence of the child was proved.

BruisedUm Fatima said that she didn’t

remove her daughter’s clothes since Thursday as she was in terrible pain. “I had to cut her clothes using a scissor. I was shocked to see a bruise on the back of her left shoulder. I documented the bruise and showed it to the ministry’s specialist, who also documented it and took our statements (Fatima’s parents),” she informed.

The mother also told that the specialist acknowledged the injuries, saw the medical reports and noticed that the child is scared whenever someone attempts to come near her injury.

“We were informed by the specialist that an investigative committee has been formed by the ministry to look into the case,” Um Fatima said in a conversation with DT News yesterday.

She said that Fatima is still in pain and the truth about what caused her injury remains unknown, adding that she is

taking Fatima to a second appointment with a pediatric orthopedic today and will meet an attorney on the same day to follow up on her complaint against the school.

DT News reported yesterday that the school called the mother on Thursday and asked her to pick Fatima up from the school as she was sleeping.

The girl was crying when her father picked her up, but he didn’t suspect that any accident might have happened inside the school on that day.

The mother noticed that her daughter continued to cry in pain after she returned from the school. She took her daughter to a hospital when the educators at the school were suspiciously avoiding her questions about what happened to her daughter inside the school. At the hospital, the doctors informed her that her two-year-old is suffering from a fractured shoulder.

Um Fatima immediately lodged a complaint against the school at Nabih Saleh police station, as she was more worried when she was apparently told by the school’s administration that the surveillance cameras installed at the school weren’t recording since September. The mother told that she fears that her daughter was mistreated or abused while inside the school.

The words “me too” may be short, but they convey a powerful

and yet heart wrenching message. Ever since American actress Alyssa Milano tweeted, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted, write ‘me too’ as a reply,” thousands of women around the world have taken to social media to speak out. The floodgates have opened, and the hashtag is emblematic of a shift currently underway, in which women are addressing the sexism and violence used against them.

Like the #WomenBoycottTwitter day last week, the #MeToo movement, although originally created ten years ago, resurfaced in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal in Hollywood. It seems that

the media won’t stop talking about Weinstein, and while he certainly was the catalyst for the increased dialogue, assault and sexism against women reaches into every facet of society. Witness, for example, model Cameron Russell’s Instagram account, where she anonymously publishes stories of models’ abuse in the fashion industry.

Admitting “me too” is not an easy thing to do. The unfortunate truth is that the hashtag only reveals a fraction of the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted. There are countless women on social media who are too embarrassed or afraid to write #MeToo. Then, of course, there are the millions of women who aren’t on social media who have

been harassed. “Me Too” begs the question: what woman hasn’t been harassed or assaulted? Why do we live in a world where it would be surprising to meet a woman who hasn’t had some horrific experience?

“Me too” helps women know that they are not alone. It helps women open up about trauma that they may have never discussed before. But the tragic thing about “Me too” is that in most of the cases, the perpetrator walked free. It is equally tragic that women cannot or will not name their attacker. On Russell’s Instagram account, the names of attackers and those complicit are blacked out. Why? Why should men who have committed a crime not be shamed and held accountable for their actions? Why should they be allowed to continue, as Weinstein did, to harass women?

It is beyond inspiring to see women of all backgrounds sharing their stories. However, it is absolutely critical that this momentum is not lost. Sexual assault is a crime that needs to be stopped. Hollywood stories and hashtags have their expiration dates, but life continues on regardless if celebrities are talking about an issue. Women cannot afford to have the media move on to another story.

Hunt for culprits who attacked security guardMuhannad Mansour/DTNN [email protected]

Manama

A manhunt has been launched to nab those who brutally attacked an

Arab security guard at an amusement park in the Capital Governorate a few days ago.

As reported online by DT News yesterday, the Jordanian national was attacked by over a dozen of men while he was carrying out his duties at Adhari Park. He was rushed to Salmaniya Medical Complex, where he was diagnosed with several fractures to the skull and face and other injuries.

Capital Governorate Police General Director Colonel Khalid Al Thawadi yesterday announced the arrest of some of the attackers.

He said that “search is continued for the arrest of the remaining suspects”. Col. Al Thawadi explained in a statement issued here yesterday that “the authorities concerned moved to the scene and the victim was referred to the hospital”.

“The investigation led to the identification of the attackers, and some of them were arrested. Legal proceedings would be taken to refer

the case to the Public Prosecution,” the official added.

Videos of the brawl were widely circulated on local social media networks this weekend, showing the victim being kicked and punched by a group of men.

According to Jordanian press, the Jordanian Embassy in the Kingdom is following up on the case, as the man has no family members in Bahrain to assist him. The matter was widely discussed on local social networks.

Some claimed that the security guard slapped an 18-year-old boy who broke the rules of the park and that what sparked the fight. However, this information could not be verified yet.

Saudi Arabia says oil market improvingBaghdad

The global oil market is improving and stabilising, Saudi

Oil Minister Khalid al-Falih said in Baghdad yesterday.

In a speech at the opening of the Baghdad International Exhibition,

Falih praised the cooperation between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, which he said had helped to boost global oil prices.

Speaking later to reporters, he said Saudi Arabia and Iraq were in agreement on the need to “fully

comply” with cutbacks in crude output agreed by OPEC, Russia and several other producers to push up prices.

“The market has improved a lot but has still some way to go,” he said, adding that the compliance of the 24 nations taking part in the cutbacks deal “exceeds 100 percent”.

Falih is the first Saudi official to make a public speech in Baghdad for several decades.

The two countries began taking steps towards detente in 2015 after 25 years of troubled relations starting with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Falih visited Iraq earlier this year.

“The best example of the importance of cooperation between our two countries is the improvement and stability trend seen in the oil market,” said Falih, to applause from the audience of Iraqi ministers, senior officials and businessmen.

Saudi Arabia and Iraq are the largest and second largest producers of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The Iraqi oil ministry said in a statement Falih and his Iraqi counterpart, Jabar al-Luaibi, agreed to cooperate in implementing decisions by oil exporting countries to curb global supply in order to lift crude prices.

OPEC, Russia and other producers have reduced production by about 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) since the start of 2017, helping to boost oil prices. The cutbacks should continue until March 2018. (Reuters)

The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company

(GPIC) achieved its highest productivity ever of Ammonia, Urea and Methanol in the third quarter of this year, the Company has revealed.

Total production reached 1.2 million tonnes in the third quarter and this included 347,000 metric tons of Ammonia, 331,000 metric tons of Methanol and 525,000 metric tons of Urea.

This was made possible while maintaining a high level of performance and a commitment to sustainable development in its business activities.

The achievements were all the more impressive since they were made despite the challenges, including the condition of the global chemical and fertiliser markets and low oil prices. It was thanks also to the Company employees, their dedication, their professionalism and their desire to overcome all obstacles.

GPIC Board of Directors Chairman Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan praised the professional excellence of the Company and the team and its executive Management for their implementation of the Board of Directors’ strategies.

Dr. Al Sharyan said fluctuations in global markets have affected the balance of supply and demand. He said despite those challenges, which include increased supply and less demand, there was no obstacle for GPIC to continue production and

exports to alternative markets and getting good returns. This, he said, indicated the sound marketing plans and strategies of the Board of Directors to meet all challenges. This was done in co-ordination and co-operation with the Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait, the authorized marketer for Ammonia and Urea and the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), the authorized marketer for Methanol.

In a statement, Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery expressed satisfaction at the results and also spoke about achievements in other areas such as occupational safety, which are much admired in the industry.

He said GPIC has been

able to achieve about 5,638 working days without a lost time accident, which is equivalent to more than 26.6 million hours. This, he said, is the result of careful application of international safety standards. Dr. Jawahery said another major achievement was in ensuring employees stayed safe since they are the real wealth of the Company in ensuring its success.

He said all employees have worked with a lot of professionalism and dedication, while complying with the highest safety standards, to make the success a reality. He said GPIC is always keen to ensure special attention is given to each employee in imparting special training on emergencies and crises situations, in addition

to organising lectures on health and safety.

Dr. Jawahery said every employee has been made aware on the potential damage caused by unsafe practices and how to avoid it. He praised the employees’ commitment to all safety applications and the importance of complying with them.

Dr. Jawahery reiterated all these achievements would not have been possible without the unlimited support of the Company’s executive management and the Board of Directors, headed by Dr. Al Sharyan.

GPIC has exported a total of 920,000 metric tons in the third quarter.

Taiwan was the largest market with 16 per cent, followed by the United States, at 15 per cent.

GPIC achieves record production

October is the Breast Cancer awareness month and Bahrain

Indian School (BIS) contributed to the service of the society by educating children about breast cancer by organizing ‘Think Pink’ week celebrations. Under the umbrella of Think Pink various activities like poster making, greeting card making, awareness talks and paper presentation were conducted by grade V and VI children. A special assembly, cricket match and football match between teachers and students were also held.

The awareness was demonstrated by the use of pink colour all around the school. The school was adorned with decorations of pink colour. The teachers wore pink dresses and ‘Think Pink’ ribbons. The corridors and the bulletin boards displayed breast cancer awareness information and facts. Cross-curricular learning took place along with the generation of awareness relating to a very burning yet a sensitive issue. Students and teachers sold cupcakes and greeting cards to the parents as a part of fund raising campaign. Funds were also raised by the generous donation from the parents as well. The funds raised will go to charity.

School Directors Himanshu Verma and Ritu Verma appreciated the teachers and students for conducting such a noble awareness program and thanked both the parents and the teachers for their efforts in inculcating values and social responsibility among children.

FUEGO: ANTONIO GADES COMPANY

Date : 1 December 2017, 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National Theatre

The Antonio Gades Company, a major pillar of Spanish flamenco dance, will be presenting “Fuego”, which is inspired by the work of the late Spanish legendary composer, Manuel de Falla. The plot, choreography and lighting made by the late Antonio Gades and the Spanish film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura. Coinciding with the tenth anniver-sary of the death of Antonio Gades, the foundation that carries his name decided to undertake a very significant challenge setting up another version of the Manuel de Falla’s ballet “Enchanted Love”. Titled “Fuego”, this produc-tion was the second scenic interpre-tation which the choreographer had of Manuel de Falla’s work. Being an exponent of Gades’ core idea “return to tradition if you want to evolve”, this ballet is a transitional piece between the almost mythical setups in the classic plays, Carmen and Fuenteovejuna. It was also the last of the joint mythical flamenco works by Gades and Saura, with the same overlaying structure they followed in Carmen, first as a film and secondly as a ballet.

LECTURE : LIFE AND DEATH IN EARLY DILMUN: STORIES FROM THE DILMUN BIOARCHAEOLOGY PROJECTDATE

Date: 22 November 2017, 6:30pmVenue : Bahrain National Museum –Auditorium

Since 2008, the Dilmun Bioarchaeology Project has been studying and pub-lishing the collections from Peter B. Cornwall’s 1940-41 expedition to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, which now reside in the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley. Cornwall excavated at least 24 burial mounds in the northern and western parts of Bahrain Island, and conducted surface survey at several archaeologi-cal sites in the al-Hasa region of Saudi Arabia. He drew on thesematerials to argue that the Bronze Age polity of Dilmun had been located in that region. By documenting and analyz-ing the skeletal remains and artifacts collected by Cornwall, our team hopes to add to anthropologists’ understand-ing of how life was experienced and death commemorated in Dilmun. Preliminary findings have been pub-lished in academic and public-orient-

ed peer-reviewed journals. We also mounted a touring museum exhibit entitled “From Death to Life in Ancient Bahrain” that features the facial recon-structions of two Early Dilmun people. Recently, we launched a new phase of the project in which AMS radiocarbon dating and stable isotope analysis are confirming the dates of the Bahraini burial mounds and shedding light on the residential mobility and dietary practices of the people buried in them. We look forward to sharing the results of our research with the audience at the Bahrain National Museum. Alexis T. Boutin (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Advisor in the Cultural Resources Management M.A. Program at Sonoma State University. Her bioarchaeological fieldwork and museum collections research focuses on ancient Near Eastern, Gulf, and eastern Mediterranean societies. Alexis’s publications use human skel-etal remains, archaeological contexts, and ancient texts to tell stories about embodied personhood in all of its iterations. Her recent projects empha-size community collaboration and stakeholder-oriented interpretation and outreach.

You could feel a great deal of pressure from the people around you to join in their festivities. Perhaps you’re being lured into the frenzy of activity. Don’t feel like you have to be a part of the party if you don’t want to be. The worst thing for you to do would be to pretend that you’re interested when you aren’t.

You may have so much fun today that you forget to check on the happiness of the people around you. You should feel quite a surge of strength because of the energy of today, but realize that other people may have a hard time keeping up with your fantastic pace. Stop and take a break in order to allow other people to catch up.You may not be terribly impressed with the activity going on around you, but that doesn’t mean you have to be miserable because of it. This isn’t the time to sit back and let others take the lead. If you see something you don’t agree with, step up and make it known. Do what you can to change the course of events.

There’s a trajectory of truth to maintain today. If you try to go against the flow, you’ll have a difficult time achieving your goals. You’re much better off setting your sights on something downstream so that you can utilize the incredible force that already has a great deal of momentum behind it. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel on a day like this.

You’re competing with someone today as you fight for dominance in a situation. The unspoken battle has begun, and the war won’t end until you’ve successfully claimed your victorious position as ruler of the mountain. Defend your territory if you feel that someone is stepping on it. If you don’t make it known that you’re the boss, someone else surely will claim that spot.

Don’t hesitate to dive into whatever project or situation suits your fancy today. Your luck will make you victorious in whatever game you choose. Happiness is almost inevitable. Don’t be afraid to share your enthusiasm with others. Your confidence is incredibly inspiring. Others are lucky to be on your team.

Don’t blow things out of proportion today. You’re apt to have a tendency to exaggerate everything to such a degree that you completely lose touch with the true reality of the situation. You could be painting a terrible scene in order to elicit pity from others. Be honest about the situation before you create more enemies than friends.

Your emotions are dynamic and extreme today. They’re apt to control every action you take whether you realize it or not. Be aware that it’s best to realize it so you can then control these volatile feelings instead of being controlled by them. This doesn’t mean you should try to ignore them by pretending they don’t exist.

Once you take the first step today, the rest of the way will be a piece of cake. Before you know it, you’ll have completed the entire marathon with very little sweat on your brow. The one thing to watch out for is that you don’t run over anyone in your dash to the finish line. Be careful of the runners beside you and treat them as friends and supporters instead of opponents.

There’s an inspirational quality about you today that you should make more public. Instead of shrinking into your imagination, you should expand your energy outward to the people around you. Your heart is caring and sensitive. It’s time to earn some public recognition for its loyalty and loving nature. Stand up and take a bow for all the incredible things you do.

In many respects, the energy of the day can’t get much better for you. It’s up to you to direct this energy into action that will nourish your soul. There’s a great deal of power and strength behind your emotions. You should make sure that you carry this good feeling with you into every situation from now on.

Consider cooking dinner for a large group tonight. Ask everyone to pitch in some money and you’ll be surprised at the fantastic masterpiece you can create with just a small amount of effort on your part. Set the table with candles and add good music in the background. Even if a dinner party doesn’t sound like a fun idea now, take a leadership role.

Kabul

The toll in two suicide attacks that took place

in Kabul and Ghor province has increased to 71 with 83 others injured, Afghan authorities said yesterday.

The Islamic State (IS) terror group has claimed responsibility for the attacks that took place on Friday evening, Xinhua reported.

Forty-one worshippers died and 61 were injured when a suicide bomber detonated explosives inside the Imam Zamam mosque in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi neighbourhood which is

predominantly populated by the Shia Hazara minority.

Twenty-nine people were killed inside the mosque while 12 others succumbed to their injuries in or on the way to hospitals, mosque officials told the local media.

About an hour before the blast in Kabul, a suicide attacker detonated explosives at the Khwajagan mosque in the Dulina district of Ghor province. The attack occurred as an important anti-Taliban militiaman, Fazal Hayat Khan, and his men were praying inside, authorities said. (IANS)

Former White House adviser Steve Bannon

depicted former President George W. Bush as bumbling and inept, faulting him for presiding over a “destructive” presidency during his time in the White House.

Bannon’s scathing remarks amounted to a retort to a Bush speech in New York earlier this week, in which the 43rd president denounced bigotry in Trump-era American politics

and warned that the rise of “nativism,” isolationism and conspiracy theories have clouded the nation’s true identity.

But Bannon, speaking to a capacity crowd at a California Republican Party convention, said Bush had embarrassed himself and didn’t know what he was talking about.

Bannon said Bush has no idea whether “he is coming or going, just like it was when he was president.” (AP)

Man arrested in Munich after

knife attackMunich

At least four people were wounded in a series of

attacks yesterday morning, but none of them sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Munich police. A SWAT team managed to arrest a suspect after a large-scale search lasting some three hours. However, the police warned it was not yet completely certain that the detained man was the one responsible for the violence.

“We have arrested a person who very strongly resembles the description by witnesses, but we cannot confirm that he is the attacker,” police

spokesman Marcus da Gloria Martins told reporters.

Police chief Hubertus Andrae later said that his team had ruled out terrorism as a motivation for the attack, saying he believed the suspect had mental health problems.

During the search, police described the suspect as a thickset man of around 40, with short blond hair, unshaven, wearing a green jacket, gray pants, and a backpack with a sleeping pad attached. He was reportedly riding a black bicycle.

Preliminary information indicated that the assailant was acting alone. He

reportedly picked his victims randomly in six different locations around Munich, wounding three people with a knife and hitting one more. Two attempted attacks ended without injuries.

The authorities previously said they had deployed “all available police forces” to search for the attacker. The police called on people living in the Rosenheimer Platz area to remain indoors and for passersby to avoid the semi-central region, as well as the areas near Ostpark. People reported hearing police sirens in various parts of the city. (DW)

Trump’s drawing of Empire State building sold for $16,000Los Angeles

A sketch of the Empire State building in New

York drawn by President Donald Trump was sold by a Los Angeles auction house Thursday night for 16,000 U.S. dollars.

The 12-inch-by-9-inch (30-cm-by-23-cm) black marker depiction of the famous skyscraper was listed by the Julien’s Auction as a highlight artwork in Street, Contemporary & Celebrity Art auction in the company’s Beverly Hills showroom and online.

The drawing was estimated at 8,000 to 12,000 U.S. dollars, but

the result ran higher. Julien’s Auction finally announced the 16,000-dollar record on its official tweeter page.

Los Angeles Times reported earlier that the picture signed by Trump was created by the president for a charity auction in Florida during the time he opened his Mar-a-Lago estate as a private club in 1995.

It is not the first time that Trump’s drawing was sold out in an auction house. In July, a drawing of the Manhattan skyline by him in 2005 cost a collector 29,184 U.S. dollars in Los Angeles-based auction house Nate D. Sanders. (Xinhua)

Riyadh

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrived in

Riyadh yesterday to attend a landmark meeting between officials from Saudi Arabia and Iraq aimed at improving relations between the two countries and countering Iran’s growing regional influence.

The chief U.S. diplomat flew into King Salman Air Base a little more than a week after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a strategy to contain Iran and compel Tehran to agree to close what he charged are flaws in the multinational 2015 deal designed to prevent Iran developing nuclear weapons.

Tillerson’s only official meeting yesterday was a working dinner with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir. He was stopping in Saudi Arabia on the first leg of

a six-day trip that will also take him to Qatar, Pakistan, India and Switzerland.

His talks in Sunni Muslim-ruled Saudi Arabia and in Qatar were expected to be dominated by the topic of Shi‘ite-dominated Iran’s growing regional influence.

Iran-backed militias have helped turn the tide of Syria’s civil war in the government’s favour and they have played leading roles in Iraq’s battle to recapture Islamic State’s self-declared “caliphate.”

This week, they aided Iraqi security forces in seizing the oil-rich area of the northern city of Kirkuk as part of an effort to crush a bid for independence made by the Kurdish minority.

Washington and Riyadh also allege that Iran is supporting Houthi rebels in Yemen against pro-government forces

that are supported by a Saudi-led military coalition backed by the United States. Yemen’s grinding civil war was expected to be high on Tillerson’s agenda.

On Sunday Tillerson is due to attend the inaugural session of the Saudi-Iraqi Coordination Council, a body whose creation was promoted by the Trump administration to bolster relations between Saudi Arabia, Iran’s main regional rival, and Iraq, whose majority Shiite-dominated government has close ties with Tehran.

During his visit Tillerson is also expected to explore the possibility of renewing a push to end a diplomatic and economic boycott of Qatar by Saudi Arabia and other U.S. Arab allies, although he has conceded he is not optimistic. (Reuters)

Tillerson lands in Riyadh at start of Gulf, South Asia tour

Washington

Donald Trump has said he plans to allow the opening

of a trove of long-classified files on the assassination of former president John F Kennedy.

The president tweeted to say he would allow the release “subject to receipt of further information”.

The files are scheduled to be opened by the US National Archives on 26 October, but the president is entitled to extend their classified status.

Kennedy was shot dead by a sniper in November 1963 in Dallas, Texas.

The National Archives has already released most documents related to the assassination, but a final batch remains under lock and key.

“Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened,” Trump said in a tweet.

Congress ruled in 1992 that all JFK documents be released within 25 years, unless the president decides the release would harm national security.

The archive contains more than 3,000 previously unreleased documents, and more than 30,000 that have

been released before but with redactions.

It is unclear whether Trump intends to allow the release in full, or with redactions.

Kennedy assassination experts do not think the last batch of papers contains any major bombshells, according to a Washington Post report.

But the files may shed more light on Lee Harvey Oswald’s activities in Mexico City in late

September 1963, shortly before the assassination.

Oswald was arrested in Dallas on the day of the shooting and charged with the president’s murder. He denied the charges, claiming he was a “just a patsy”.

He was famously gunned down by nightclub owner Jack Ruby while in police custody two days later, and the plot to kill Kennedy became the most

powerful conspiracy theory in American history.

“The American public deserves to know the facts, or at least they deserve to know what the government has kept hidden from them for all these years,” Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics and author of a book about Kennedy, told the Associated Press. (BBC)

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan Ankara

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan showed no retreat

from a diplomatic row with the United States on Saturday, castigating Washington for what he said an “undemocratic” indictment against his security detail.

His comments may further dash hopes of a quick resolution to an on-going diplomatic crisis between the NATO allies. Both Ankara and Washington have cut back issuing visas to each other’s citizens as ties have worsened.

“They say the United States is the cradle of democracy. This can’t be true. This can’t be democracy,” Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul.

“If arrest warrants are issued against my bodyguards in absentia ... in the United States, where I went upon invitation,

excuse me but I will not say this is a civilised country.”

A U.S. grand jury in August indicted 15 Turkish security officials over a brawl between protesters and Erdogan’s security personnel during the Turkish president’s visit to Washington in May. Erdogan has said the indictment was not binding for Ankara.

The row deepened after Turkish authorities arrested two U.S. consular staff, both Turkish nationals. In May, a translator at the consulate in the southern province of Adana was arrested and two weeks ago a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) worker was detained in Istanbul.

Both are accused of links to last year’ failed coup. The U.S. embassy has said the accusations are baseless.(Reuters)

Zimbabwe spinners Graeme Cremer and Sean Williams

shared seven wickets as the West Indies were bowled out for 219 on the opening day of the first Test at Queens Sports Club yesterday. Cremer claimed 4 for 64 and Williams took 3 for 20, with most of those wickets coming in a dramatic hour in which the West Indies lost their last seven wickets for 45 runs. Top scorer Shai Hope was left stranded on 90 not out as he ran out of partners, with opener Kieran Powell’s 56 the only other score of note. Zimbabwe then made a positive start to their reply, with Hamilton Masakadza and debutant Solomon Mire carrying them to the close of play on 19 without loss.

“When they were 170-odd for three we were not expecting them to be bowled out 45 runs later,” said Williams.

While the West Indian total was certainly below par, it came on a pitch that took turn from the moment that spin was introduced in the first session of the game.

At that point the visitors were already two wickets down after seamers Kyle Jarvis and Solomon Mire had struck, and were battling to inject any momentum into

their innings as Chris Mpofu bowled a couple of stifling spells up front.

A 75-run stand for the third wicket between Powell and Hope led the West Indies recovery, but Zimbabwe remained patient and never let the scoring accelerate.

That allowed the hosts to take control once again when Cremer made the breakthrough, as Powell was brilliantly caught at short leg by Craig Ervine.

Hope added 64 for the fourth wicket with Roston Chase, but the collapse began after tea when Chase was d i s m i s s e d by Sikandar Raza, with Ervine completing the second of his four catches. Jermaine Blackwood was superbly stumped by Regis Chakabva as Cremer returned soon after, and the remaining wickets went down in a flurry as Williams took 3 for 2 in four overs.

“Between Cremer and I, we just tried to keep the squeeze on as much as possible, especially to Hope because we knew his hundred was coming up and we didn’t want him to have any strike,” said Williams.(AFP)

Grigor Dimitrov continued his march toward a

maiden Nitto ATP Finals appearance with a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over sixth seed Fabio Fognini yesterday to advance to the Intrum Stockholm Open final.

The seven-time ATP World Tour titlist has reached three finals this season, and gone on to capture the trophy at each event (Brisbane, Sofia, Cincinnati).

“It’s another final. That’s

all I can ask for,” Dimitrov said. “It’s very tricky playing against Fabio. After such a good first set from me, he took the lead in the second, so I had to uplift myself a little bit, trying to stay as positive as I can, and it was a great tie-break as well.”

Dimitrov did not have it easy against Fognini, though. The flashy Fognini made it clear from the first ball that he wanted to control the pace of play from the baseline, being especially aggressive on the

forehand side. That cost him dearly in the

fourth game of the opening set as after a quick start — he earned two break points in the third game — Fognini conceded serve with a loose service game that he lost with a wild forehand into the net.

After Dimitrov held to close out the opener, dropping just one point on serve, he looked to be in complete control when he broke to begin the second set with a running forehand from deep behind

the baseline to which F o g n i n i r e s p o n d e d with a drop shot into the net.

But the Italian began to cut down on his mistakes to battle back into the match, breaking back and then moving ahead a break himself with a 4-2 lead. But Dimitrov hit a tremendous backhand down the line winner to get back on serve and would not slip up again, closing it out in straight sets. The Bulgarian

extended his FedEx ATP Head2Head series advantage over the Italian to 4-2, winning for the fourth time in their past five matches. It was the end of a week of valiant efforts for Fognini and two match points on Friday against third seed Jack Sock in the quarter-finals. (atpworldtour)

Dimitrov reaches Stockholm final

Tsonga surges to fourth finalAntwerp

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will play in his fourth ATP World

Tour final of the season at the European Open in Antwerp.

The Frenchman ended the run of home favourite Ruben Bemelmans yesterday 6-3, 6-3 in 73 minutes.

“Today was a good match.

I played pretty good. Ruben had played a few good matches before and he was pretty confident, so it was not easy. I played well and had to play my best tennis to win,” Tsonga said.

Tsonga broke twice in both sets, converting all four break points, and erased two of three break points to roll past the Belgian, who was playing in his first ATP World Tour semi-final.

Today will mark Tsonga’s first title match since May, when he won the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon.

The right-hander will meet Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who ended the career-best run of 19-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece with a 6-3, 7-5 win. The #NextGenATP Greek was playing in his first ATP World Tour semi-final.

Schwartzman started slow in both sets, falling behind a break. But the World No. 26 rallied to reach back-to-back European Open finals. “I think I took every chance I had today,” Schwartzman said. “I returned really well.”

Schwartzman fell in last year’s title match to Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The 5’7” Argentine won his maiden title last year at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open. It will be his first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against Tsonga.

“It’s going to be a really tough match for me. Tsonga is a big player, big guy. He has played in a lot of finals. He has won many titles in his career,” Schwartzman said. “I’m going to enjoy the match here again in the final, try to win and try to play good tennis. (atpworldtour)

Julia Goerges lifts Kremlin Cup titleMoscow

The fourth time was the charm for Julia Goerges

this season.After three unsuccessful

finals earlier in the year, the German claimed her first singles title of 2017 at the VTB Kremlin Cup yesterday, dispatching Russian hope Daria Kasatkina, 6-1, 6-2. Goerges captured the third singles title of her career, and her first in over six years.

Goerges was overcome with tears of joy after the victory, which she sealed with her fourth ace of the match. “It just feels amazing,” she said during her on-court interview. “It’s been six years now, and I’ve been working hard for

this moment here, and I’m just so happy and so emotional now. And at the same time, it means a lot that I can share this moment with Dasha.”

With the victory, the World No.27 will re-enter the Top 20 next week, which will also qualify her for the WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai. She also hit four aces during the match, making her only the third player ever to serve over 400 aces during a single season since 2008.

Goerges will also move into position as the top-ranked German player on Monday, displacing Angelique Kerber, who has held that spot since May 14, 2012 -- 284 consecutive weeks.

Goerges put on a clinical display in the first set, utilizing her powerful forehand to race to a huge early lead. The German broke Kasatkina for 2-0 with a forehand winner on break point, and assumed a d o u b l e - b r e a k advantage at 4-0 when another strong forehand forced an error.

After Goerges held to w i n h e r fifth

consecutive game, Kasatkina had a quick consultation with her coach, and was able to use that advice to quickly hold her service and get on the board for 5-1. (wtatennis)

Refreshed Muguruza braces for big hitters in SingaporeSingapore

Garbine Muguruza feels fit and fresh ahead of the

WTA Finals with the Spanish world number two keen to bank on her experience of previous visits to Singapore to emerge from a group containing the tour’s hardest hitters in the round-robin phase.

The Wimbledon champion starts her campaign today against Latvia’s French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, the pair taking to the Singapore Indoor Stadium court after a

White Group opener between Czech Karolina Pliskova and American Venus Williams.

“Honestly, I had no preference about who I played,” the 24-year-old told reporters of the draw yesterday.

“Lately I have been playing with the big hitters and I felt a little bit better than maybe in the past, because every aggressive player is complicated to face.

“But I have improved that side of my game, and, yeah, it’s good that I’m going to play with them again.” (Reuters)

x Lewis Hamilton completes practice sweep in Austin

Austin

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton underlined

his domination of the United States Grand Prix weekend with fastest time in final practice yesterday.

It completes a clean sweep of practice sessions for the championship leader, who was 0.092 seconds quicker than title rival Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari.

Hamilton will clinch his fourth world title if he wins the race on Sunday and Vettel finishes lower than fifth.

Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas was third and Kimi Raikkonen fourth.

Although Vettel was slower than Hamilton, the session marked a major step forward for Ferrari after a terrible day for the German on Friday.

Vettel had a spin, was half a second slower than Hamilton

and then did no race-simulation work on Friday afternoon, and Ferrari changed his chassis ahead of final practice after being unable to find a problem that he said made the front axle “feel like jelly”.

But Saturday morning brought a revived Ferrari,

Vettel and team-mate Raikkonen competitive from the outset.

In the end, there was about 0.1secs between each of the drivers in the top four, and 0.277secs covered the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen

was fifth quickest, but 0.739secs off the pace and facing a 15-place grid penalty for using too many engine parts.

Carlos Sainz continued his impressive debut for the Renault team, just 0.042secs off team-mate Nico Hulkenberg as the pair took seventh and

eighth places behind the Williams of Felipe Massa.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was struggling in ninth place, 0.6secs off Verstappen after a wayward fastest lap, and ahead of the Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon.

M a s s a ’ s team-mate Lance Stroll was 12th, ahead of the McLarens of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne, the Spaniard complaining that his set-up “didn’t work”.

N e w Z e a l a n d e r B r e n d o n H a r t l e y ended the

session 15th for Toro Rosso on his F1 debut, but there was no benchmark for him because Daniil Kvyat suffered a technical problem and could manage only six laps.

Unusually, there are four hours

before qualifying at 22:00 BST (16:00 local) as the schedule is changed in the hope

more people at the track will attend the Justin T i m b e r l a k e

concert in the e v e n i n g .

FIFA U-17 World Cup

Brewster hat-trick against USA fires England to semi-finalsGoa, India

Rhian Brewster scored a hat-trick to fire England

into the semi-finals of the Under-17s World Cup after defeating USA.

The Liverpool hotshot was joined on the scoresheet by Morgan Gibbs-White to seal an historic place in the last four against the winner of Brazil and Germany.

After knocking out Japan earlier in the week Steve Cooper’s men proved too strong for the Stars and Stripes in Goa and made the perfect start.

The Young Lions made the breakthrough with just 11 minutes on the clock and it was as a result of some fine play from Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

He beat several Americans down the right before sending in a low cross that goalkeeper Justin Garces could only parry away – but Brewster was on hand to volley home the rebound.

Three minutes later the same duo combined again to double the advantage.

Foden slipped a splendid throughball into the path of Brewster and he produced a cool chip over the advancing

‘keeper to make it two.Joel Latibeaudiere thought

he had added a third moments after the restart but the City teenager’s header was harshly ruled out for pushing inside the box.

But shortly after the hour mark England did inflict a killer a blow through Gibbs-

time tuned provider as his low cross was turned in by the Wolves man at the near post.

Thoughts were turning to the semi but Cooper’s side suffered a scare with 18 minutes left on the clock as the States got themselves back

into it.Josh Sargent gave his

side hope of an amazing comeback when he prodded home – but it proved to be a false dawn.

England retained possession well throughout the closing stages as they edged closer to full time. (thesun.co.uk)

Mali beat Ghana 2-1, through to semisGuwahati, India

Mali remained the last team standing from

Africa as they prevailed over Ghana 2-1 in a FIFA U-17 World Cup quarterfinal match played amid uninterrupted rain that caused waterlogging.

Hadji Drame (15th minute) and Djemoussa Traore (61st) scored for Mali, while Kudus Mohammed (70th) reduced the margin for Ghana at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.

Last edition’s runners-up Mali started on an attacking note with Lassana N’diaye finding the ball at his feet in a dangerous position on two different occasions, but Ghana’s defence was equal to the task.

On the lookout for a goal, Mali were rewarded for their attacking play when Drame

put them ahead with a beautiful strike, giving Ghana goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim no chance.

This was Drame’s third goal in the competition.

While two-time former champions Ghana struggled to play their natural game in the puddles of water, Mali seemed to thrive in these conditions and went into half time with a one-goal advantage.

Mali doubled the lead, quite deservingly so, in the 61st minute through Traore. A gaffe by Danlad, who raced off his line to make a clearance, ended up handling Traore’s shot into his own net.

There was a glimmer of hope for Ghana when Mohammed converted a penalty after Sadiq Ibrahim was felled by Fode Konate. (indianexpress)

Batshuayi brace lifts Chelsea

London

Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to score

twice as Chelsea fought back from behind to win a six-goal thriller against Watford.

Chelsea were on the back foot for much of this contest at Stamford Bridge but two goals from Batshuayi, either side of an 87th-minute header from Cesar Azpilicueta, snatched the champions a much-needed 4-2 victory.

For a while, Chelsea looked on course for a third

straight Premier League loss when Abdoulaye Doucoure and Roberto Pereyra’s goals put Watford 2-1 up before Batshuayi and then Azpilicueta instigated the turnaround. Batshuayi added his second in stoppage time.

Chelsea also had the officials to thank after Pedro’s opener, a superb long-range strike, came from a corner that should not have been given.

That will be of little significance to Antonio Conte,

however, whose relief was palpable when he celebrated Azpilicueta’s goal by diving in amongst the Chelsea fans. This was his team’s first victory in four matches in all competitions.

They were certainly flattered by the scoreline as Watford dominated for large spells and Marco Silva will rue his side’s wasteful finishing. Richarlison squandered two excellent chances, the second of which would have put his team two to the good.

Chelsea’s victory means they leapfrog Watford in the table, who started the game above their opponents in fourth. Any early Chelsea nerves were settled by an opening goal that began with a large slice of fortune and ended with a brilliant long-range strike.

Assistant referee Andrew Halliday awarded a corner when the ball clearly came off Hazard’s foot last and Chelsea took it quickly, Hazard playing to the edge of

the box where Pedro whipped

his shot first time off the far post and

into the corner.The champions were

temporarily buoyant and Cesc Fabregas should have doubled their advantage when played through one-on-one soon after but his chipped finish plopped into the grateful hands of Heurelho Gomes.

For large parts of the first period, however, Watford

were the ones in control and it was no more than they deserved when Doucoure equalised just before the break.

Jose Holebas trundled over from the opposite side of the pitch to launch a long throw into the box and while David Luiz met the header, the ball dropped down for Doucoure to drill in his fourth league goal of the season. Watford came out all guns blazing and could have scored three in the first 10 minutes. (espn.in)
