What is Ultrafiltration Rate?
Q: What is Ultrafiltration Rate?
Answer:
The ultrafiltration rate measures the rapidity with which
fluid is removed at dialysis per unit (kg) body weight in
unit (hour) time. It is under control of the dialysis facility
providers and is monitored throughout the hemodialysis
session.

Why Is Ultrafiltration Rate Important in ESRD Treatment?
Q: Why is Ultrafiltration Rate important in
ESRD treatment?
Answer:
• Ultrafiltration rates have been shown in numerous
studies to be associated with both Mortality and
Recovery Times in ESRD Patients.
• High ultrafiltration rates have been associated with
symptoms such as low blood pressure and dizziness.

How Is Ultrafiltration Measured?
Question: How is Ultrafiltration measured?

How Is Ultrafiltration Measured?
Q: How is Ultrafiltration measured?
Answer:
Ultrafiltration is measured by directly measuring the
amount of fluid removed during a dialysis session or
measuring the amount of weight lost during a dialysis
session. This amount is then divided by the weight of the
patient and the time on dialysis

What Are the Values/Outcomes Expected?
Q: What are the values/outcomes expected?
Answer:
Actual performance is not being assessed with this
measure. CMS wants monitoring and accurate reporting of
measured Ultrafiltration Rates during hemodialysis
treatments.

Why Is CMS Collecting this New Data Element?
Q: Why is CMS collecting this new data
element?
Answer:
Ultrafiltration Rate is an important quality indicator that
has been shown to affect patient outcomes such as
mortality. CMS believes monitoring ultrafiltration rate is
an important aspect of delivering quality dialysis care.
1. For 2018, the following data elements will be required reporting in CROWNWeb for all hemodialysis sessions, (example: 3 times per week*) during the week of the monthly Kt/V draw:
• Pre-Dialysis Weight
• Post-Dialysis Weight
• Delivered Minutes of BUN Hemodialysis
2. Additionally, once per month, the Number of Sessions of Dialysis delivered by the dialysis unit to the patient, in the reporting month, will be required in CROWNWeb
3. The Ultrafiltration Rate will be a reporting measure that will use CROWNWeb as its primary data source for PY 2020
