HOW TO CREATE A CV THAT WORKS

Learn how to present yourself for success and get the job you

always dreamed about

Page 2: Ultimate cv guide

You’re in the right place if:■You have a job, but it’s not really your

‘Dream Job”

■You’re in a job but you want to advance your career

■You’re struggling to get any job at all!

Page 3: Ultimate cv guide

Here’s what you’ll learn by hanging around■The one thing that every employer wants

to see in a CV that 90% of applicants don’t include

■How to make your CV stand out from everybody else’s

■How to get interviewed for a job that requires experience, when you have no experience

Page 4: Ultimate cv guide

Here’s how the call is going to run…

■Webinar will run for 1 hour

■We’ll cover a lot of information – make sure you’ve got something to take notes on, and maybe turn off your phone and Facebook so you don’t get distracted.

■There is a box that you can type any questions into, I’ll answer them at the end

3. Frame & Stick

Who Am I?I’m Frank Ansell.

I graduated with a BSc in Astrophysics

In 2009 when the GFC hit the world, I was unemployed and had no experience

Ended up working night shifts in a call centre. Pretty lame.

Page 6: Ultimate cv guide

Eventually…I managed to get hired as a mechanical engineer, designing energy efficient buildings.

After the Christchurch earthquake I was responsible for some major commercial projects.

Page 7: Ultimate cv guide

How did I do it?■I had no relevant experience, and the wrong

degree

■But I was able to get into my dream career

■I found a system for getting in front of the right people, and showing them how I was the right person for them to hire

■If you follow these steps, you can get into any career you want

Page 8: Ultimate cv guide

The 3 biggest mistakes that I made!

1. Didn’t stay focused on the end goal.

When I got rejected, I gave up and tried something else.

I didn’t persevere.

Page 9: Ultimate cv guide

The 3 biggest mistakes that I made!

2. Mainly looking for jobs that were advertised

I spent way too long looking for job ads, and applying for anything that looked interesting.

Page 10: Ultimate cv guide

The 3 biggest mistakes that I made!

3. Didn’t spend enough time looking for jobs.

Realistically, I should have been able to get an interview every week. Probably would have taken 1 - 2 months to get a decent job.

Instead it took me 9 months!

Page 11: Ultimate cv guide

The crucial fact most people don’t know about CVs

Most people think that a CV is designed to get you a job - WRONG

An employer advertises a job, gets loads of CVs sent to them

Page 12: Ultimate cv guide

They can’t interview everyone – it would take too long.

They go through the CVs and whittle down the applicants to a manageable number.

Maybe 3-5 people get an interview.

The crucial fact most people don’t know about CVs

Page 13: Ultimate cv guide

So the CV is just there to screen out anyone who doesn’t have the exact right qualifications and experience.

And then they conduct an interview to make sure you aren’t a dickhead.

Page 14: Ultimate cv guide

The one thing that every employer wants to see in a CV but 90% of candidates leave out

■Your previous jobs and length of time you were there

■Include the specific ROLE that you did

■Then explain what you actually had to do in that role.

Page 15: Ultimate cv guide

Does a funny man tell you he’s funny?

Page 16: Ultimate cv guide

Example – let’s say you worked in retail sales: Retail sales representative 2012-2014

I was responsible for greeting customers as they entered the store, identifying their needs, and then educating them on our product range. I had a daily and weekly sales target to meet. I was the highest grossing sales rep in our store for 6 of the 18 months I worked there.

Try this next time you send out your CV!

Page 17: Ultimate cv guide

The Secret to making your CV stand out

• If you’re sending in your CV like everyone else, then you’re just getting in line

• If you get in line you’ll never get AHEAD

Page 18: Ultimate cv guide

There are other (better) ways to get noticed

■Making your CV stand out is all about the DELIVERY

■There are other ways to get an interview

■Then the CV doesn’t matter much anyway

Page 19: Ultimate cv guide

Other ways to get an interview■Introduction from friends or

family■Introduction from a

colleague■Networking event■Cold call or email■Literally knock on the door■Send some “lumpy mail”

■Think like a marketer or advertiser

Page 20: Ultimate cv guide

Lumpy Mail

“Now that I’ve got my foot in the door…”

“Here’s where you’ll be putting the other CVs once you’ve read this …”

Page 21: Ultimate cv guide

Lumpy Mail

Page 22: Ultimate cv guide

Remember:■The general rule is, you should never send your CV

in front of you, but always leave it behind you.

■In other words, you want to contact the employer and introduce yourself somehow, and then take your CV along to the interview (or email it in once you’ve booked the interview).

■You should be able to interest them enough with your introduction to get an interview.

Page 23: Ultimate cv guide

“I’ve got no experience”

Page 24: Ultimate cv guide

You need experience, but you have no experience?■Whatever your background, you have some kind of

experience.

■The key is to show how your previous experience can be suitable for the role you’re applying for.

■This is why it’s important to research the role that you’re applying for!

Page 25: Ultimate cv guide

Example:■You’re applying for a sales role:

■You don’t have sales experience but you could talk about a time that you went door to door collecting money for charity. Or when you sold raffle tickets to raise money for your sports team.

■Draw on your experiences from school, part time jobs, sports, social clubs, hobbies, anything you’ve been involved in.

Page 26: Ultimate cv guide

Or, get experience in the right industry■Even if it’s not the right role.

■I knew a Landscape Architecture graduate who couldn’t find a job and ended up working in retail.

■After a couple of years she gave up her retail job and took a paycut to work at a garden centre selling plants.

■6 months later she got hired as a Landscape Architect because she was able to show that she had INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

Page 27: Ultimate cv guide

Summary

■Your CV won’t get you a job, it can only get you an interview at best

■Ideally you should try to contact the hiring manager directly to book an interview – don’t just send in your CV

■Make sure your CV includes CLEAR EXAMPLES of your previous experience, explaining what you’ve actually done.

Page 28: Ultimate cv guide

Please, please remember…■This is NOT just theory

■ This is exactly what I did to get into my dream career when I had no experience and a “useless” degree

■ You can do exactly the same if you’re struggling to get your dream job

Page 29: Ultimate cv guide

I’m not sure why you showed up today…■It may be because you’re fed up with working a boring job

■Or you want to use the qualifications that you studied hard to get

■Your current job isn’t enabling the lifestyle that you want

Page 30: Ultimate cv guide

If you only take away one thing today…■Discovering how to apply for jobs like this changed my whole life

■I was ready to give up and answer phones for the rest of my life

■If you’ve finished university then YOU ALREADY HAVE all the experience and qualifications you need to get your dream job

Page 31: Ultimate cv guide

So, the obvious question is…■How do I figure out what job I want, write my CV, get

it to the right person, and then ace the job interview to get my dream career?

■You have a choice…

■You can do it slow… using trial and error and some of what I’ve taught you today

■Or, you can do it quickly by joining my Dream Job in 30 Days course

You’re not just following a process!■ Applying for a job isn’t about

following a set process, like applying to open a bank account

■ If you follow all the steps and do nothing wrong, that’s not enough to guarantee that you’ll get hired.

■ When applying for a job, it’s more important to STAND OUT.
