ENGLISH: Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance.* Grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies,* and protect Your community by Your cross. First Antiphon: My God, my God, look upon me, why have You forsaken me? Why can’t my sinful words reach You, my salvation. Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Saviour, save us. When I cry to You during the day, O my God, You do not listen, and there is no rest for me at night. Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Saviour, save us. Nonetheless You are there in the holy place, O Israel’s boast. Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Saviour, save us. Glory be to the Father. . . Only Begotten Son. . . Third Antiphon: The Lord is king; the peoples tremble; he is throned upon the cherubim; the earth quakes. Tropar of the Exaltation, tone 1: Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance.* Grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies,* and protect Your community by Your cross.

The Lord in Zion is great, he is high above all the peoples. Save Your people, O Lord..... Let them praise your great and awesome name; holy is he! Save Your people, O Lord..... At the Little Entrance: Extol the Lord, our God, and worship at his footstool; holy is he! Save Your people, O Lord..... Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen. Exaltation Kondak, tone 4: By your own choice, O Christ our God,* you were lifted on the cross.* Grant your mercies to your new community* that bears your name.* By your power gladden the faithful people* and grant them victory against enemies.* May they have the help of your instrument of peace,* the invincible sign of victory. ENGLISH: Instead of: Holy God, Holy Mighty. . .: To Your cross, O Master, we bow in veneration, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection. УКРАЇНСКІ: Замiсть Трисвятого: Хресту твоєму поклоняємось, Владико, і святеє воскресення твоє славимо. Prokimen, Tone 7: Exalt the Lord our God, and bow in worship at the footstool of His feet for it is holy. Verse: The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble. Epistle: A reading from the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians. (1: 18-24) Brothers and Sisters! The message of the cross is complete absurdity to those who are headed for ruin, but to us who are experiencing salvation it is the power of God. Scripture says, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and thwart the cleverness of the clever.” Where is the wise man to be found? Where the scribe? Where is the master of worldly argument? Has not God turned the wisdom of this world into folly? Since in God’s wisdom the world did not come to know him through “wisdom,” it pleased God to save those who believe through the absurdity of the preaching of the gospel. Yes, Jews demand “signs” and Greeks look for “wisdom,” but we preach Christ crucified - a stumbling block to the Jews and an absurdity to Gentiles; but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Alleluia Verses: Remember your congregation which you acquired from the beginning. But God is our king before all ages; He has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth. Gospel: John 19: 6-11; 13-20; 25-28; 31-35 At that time, after the high priests and elders decided to put Jesus to death, they led him to Pilate saying, “Take him! Take him! Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said, “Take him and crucify him yourselves; I find no case against him.” “We have our law,” the Jews responded, “and according to that law he must die because he made himself God’s Son.” When Pilate heard this kind of talk, he was more afraid than ever. Going back into the praetorium, he said to Jesus, “Where do you come from?” Jesus would not give him any answer. “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate asked him “Do you now know that I have the power to release you and the power to crucify you?” Jesus answered: “You would have no power over me whatever unless, it were give you from above. That is why he who handed me over to you is guilty of the greater sin.” Hearing these words, Pilate then brought Jesus outside and took a seat on a judges bench at the place called the Stone Pavement - Gabbatha in Hebrew. (It was the Preparation Day for Passover, and the hour was about noon.) He said to the Jews, “Look at your king!” At this they shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” “What!” Pilate exclaimed, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests replied, “We have no king but Caesar.” In the end, Pilate handed

Jesus over to be crucified. Jesus was led away, and carrying the cross by himself, went out to what is called the Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha). There they crucified him, and two others with him, one on either side. Jesus in the middle. Pilate had an inscription placed on the cross which read ‘Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews.’ This inscription, in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, was read by many of the Jews, since the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. Near the cross of Jesus there stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Seeing his mother there with the disciple whom he loved, Jesus said to his mother, “Woman, there is your son.” In turn he said to the disciple, “There is your mother.” From that hour onward, the disciple took her into his care. After that, Jesus realizing that everything was now finished, bowed his head, and delivered over his spirit. Since it was the Preparation Day the Jews did not want to have the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, for that sabbath was a solemn feast day. They asked Pilate that the legs be broken and the bodies be taken away. Accordingly, the soldiers came and broke the legs of the men crucified with Jesus, first of the one, then of the other. When they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. One of the soldiers thrust a lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. This testimony has been given by an eyewitness, and his testimony is true. Instead of “It is truly right. . .”: My soul, extol the venerable cross of the Lord. O Mother of God, you are a hidden paradise which mysteriously brought forth Christ by whom a life-giving tree of the cross has been planted on earth. Today this cross is being exalted, and we, adoring it, glorify You. Communion Hymn: The Light of Your face, O Lord, is raised over us. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! __________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________ WORD OF LIFE - September 2014 (Focolare Movement)

‘Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.’ (Rom 15:7) These words are some of Paul’s final guidance in his letter to the Christians in Rome. This community, like many others spread throughout the Graeco-Roman world, was composed of believers who came partly from pagan and partly from Jewish origins. Therefore their mindsets, their cultural backgrounds and their spiritual sensitivities were very different. Such diversity gave an opening to judgements, prejudices, discrimination and intolerance towards others that were certainly not in accord with the mutual welcome that God wanted them to have. To help them overcome these difficulties, Paul found there was no better way than to make them reflect upon the grace of their conversion. The fact that Jesus had called them to faith, giving the gift of his Spirit, was tangible proof of the love with which he had welcomed each one of them. Despite their past lives and the difference in their backgrounds, Jesus had welcomed them together into one body. ‘Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.’ Paul’s words remind us of one of the most moving aspects of Jesus’ love. It is the love that, during his life on earth, led Jesus always to welcome everyone, especially the most marginalized, those most in need, the furthest away. It is the love that led Jesus to offer his trust, confidence, friendship to everyone, breaking down, one by one, the barriers that human pride and selfishness had built in the society of his time. Jesus was the manifestation of the Father’s totally welcoming love for each one of us, which we, in our turn, ought to have for one another. This is the first thing God wills from us. For this reason we can give the Father no greater glory than by trying to welcome each other in the same way that Jesus welcomed us. ‘Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.’ How can we live the Word of Life this month? It draws our attention to one of our commonest forms of selfishness and, let’s face it, one of the most difficult to overcome: the tendency to isolate ourselves, to discriminate, to marginalize, to exclude the other because he or she is different and could disturb our tranquillity. Let’s try to live this Word of Life first of all inside our families, associations, communities, groups at work, by ridding ourselves of our judgements, discrimination, prejudice, resentment, intolerance towards one neighbour or another. These things come so easily and so often, chilling and spoiling human relations. Like a pall of ill will, they block mutual love. And then in society in general, let’s resolve to witness to the welcoming love of Jesus to any neighbour the Lord puts next to us, especially those social selfishness most easily tends to exclude or marginalize. Welcoming the other, the one different from us, lies at the basis of Christian love. It is the starting point, the first step to building the civilization of love, the culture of communion, that Jesus is calling us to above all today.

Eparchy of Saskatoon Family and Life Office Bulletin: September 2014

“The future of the world passes through the family” Familiaris Consortio, 79

September 2014: In our Bulletin Insert for May/June 2014 we spoke about how much parents matter in the lives of their children, not just to provide for their material, social and psychological well being but also for their ‘spiritual’ well being. Research repeatedly confirms this—but the question still remains as to how parents can pass on the faith to their children in a world where the culture does not support a Sacramental/Liturgical worldview. The other problem that arises is the practical concerns of all family members in living their faith in today’s world. STRONG CATHOLIC FAMILIES, STRONG CATHOLIC YOUTH is an Eparchial initiative that is being kicked off in Saskatoon on September 19/20, 2014. It is not just another program but a whole new way of looking at ourselves as “church” - beginning at the level of the ‘Domestic church’, and working towards the Vibrant Parish. Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth will introduce a process for changing the way communities of faith partner with parents so that the Catholic faith can be more effectively passed on to the next generation of disciples. Strong Catholic Families events: a. Inspire parents to embrace the responsibility for the faith growth of their children and family as a domestic church, and b. Motivate parishes/schools to support and equip parents and families in passing the faith

onto their children and deepening the practice of faith within their homes. The Diocese of Saskatoon and the Eparchy are joint sponsors of the kickoff event in Saskatoon. Don’t miss this opportunity! (For those outside of Saskatoon-Strong Catholic Families will be coming to your parish or a parish near you, soon.) For more information check out the Eparchy website or the Family and Life Office: http://www.skeparchy.org/familyandlife/?page_id=903

Eparchial SOBOR For those of you who were able to attend the Eparchial SOBOR in May you may be wondering why you have not seen anything online or heard about the follow up to the participant questions and responses. Please

accept my apologies for the delay and be advised that the Q and A promised (as well as the questions asking for personal responses) should be received or seen on the eparchial website before the end of the month. The SOBOR itself is a three-part process that included the “Families Evangelizing Families” event, the Eparchial Survey and the Parish Pastoral Plans. A document that synthesizes all three is being prepared and will be ratified at second SOBOR Meeting in October of 2014. Thank you for your patience - it has been a very busy summer.

Exaltation of the Holy Cross: A Family Tradition Worth Revisiting… In a world where no one understands suffering, the incredible beauty and victory of the Life Giving Cross makes no sense whatsoever. As Christians we know that the meaning of the Cross is that through it Christ

defeated death, so it is the symbol of our salvation. However, the fact that the Cross of Christ has profound impact on our daily life is often missed. All humanity is subject to suffering. But in Christ that pain is given meaning and hope. Scripture often talks about the paradox of our faith wherein joy can be borne from sorrow. In Romans 5:3-5 the apostle Paul says “We glory, then in our afflictions, because we know that affliction begets patience, and patience makes for proving, and proving hope; nor does hope put us to shame, because the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Sprit who is given to us.” As St. John Paul II reminds us, in his Apostolic Letter on Human Suffering, “In Christ’s cross it is not only that the redemption is completed through the passion; but human suffering is itself redeemed.” Christ suffered for us out of Love, in this great love our suffering is linked to love, and in love, life and hope abound. So proudly display the crucifix of Christ in your home and icon corners. Decorate it and venerate it on this feast. Everyone suffers, but because of our faith we are not alone. Christ is with us in all our suffering, He endures it with us and in the Cross of Christ the ultimate victory is found. Remind your children that all our suffering can have meaning as we can, in love, unite our sufferings with Christ’s. “To your Cross O Master we bow in Veneration, and we Glorify Your Holy Resurrection!” ____________________________________________________________________________________________
