Visual identity guidelines

This document provides guidelines on how the visual identity and tone of voice for UKEssays.com is to be applied.These guidelines must be adhered to for all corporate communications, literature, online and promotional items.

Please ensure before commencing design work that you consider the following:

• Check that the correct fonts are being used. • Check that the logo is being applied in the correct manner. • Check that the correct colours are being used.

The guidelines allow for flexibility for individual creative designs.

Effective and consistent application of the UKEssays.com visual identity will play a key part in developing the brand long-term.

Do not attempt to scan or redraw the logo – electronic copies are available.

The UKEssays.com icon can be used on its own as a graphic element, such as a subtle watermark on a letter header. But it must be accompanied by the full logo or within a document that contains the full logo.

To allow flexibility within your design, all of the Helvetica font set can be used, from italic, light and condensed.

UKEssays – Tone of voice overview

Inject passion – Avoid stuffy business waffle and bring your enthusiasm into your writing. For example, ‘I’m really pleased you decided to come back to us.’

Bold headlines – Think about messages that will capture your reader’s attention and use bold headlines to draw them in.

Avoid clichés – Things like ‘I’d like to take this opportunity’, ‘please find enclosed’, have been said time and again. If you think you’ve heard it somewhere before, try to avoid it.

Check the energy – Do your words flow smoothly? Did you read to the end without effort? If you have to read anything twice, give it an edit.

Clear purpose – Are you clear about the purpose of your piece of communication? Is there one distinct message that comes through clearly?

Talk about positives – For example, emphasise what we ‘can’ do, rather than what we can’t.

Less is more – Be brief. Keep sentences short, 15-20 words on average.

Everyday words – Use straightforward, everyday words. Minimise industry jargon because we can’t assume everyone will understand.

Picture your reader – Who are you writing to? Try to imagine them sitting across the table from you.

Think about their concerns – What might they be thinking about as they pick up your communications?

‘I’ and ‘we” – Use ‘I’, ‘you’ and ‘we’ to sound personal.

Active language – Use active language like ’I will email you’,not ‘an email will be sent’

Be honest – Be open about mistakes and be clear what you intend to do about it. We are all human.
