In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2003, 37% of those questioned indicated improvement in their company’s performance — up 3% from the third quarter, and 8% from the second quarter. Expected sales performance over the next three months also rose, from 34% in the third quarter to 42% in the fourth. Confidence in the manufacturing industry’s performance in the next 12 months rose by 8% to 37%. This buoyant outlook is reflected across the UK. In the Midlands, 81% of those questioned expect their companies manufacturing capacity for the next three months to remain constant or increase, as do 77% of those surveyed in the North of England. Confidence levels are high across all areas for manufacturing performance, with 81% of respondents in the South East expecting consistency or an improvement. These results are comparable with the Confederation of British Industry’s latest quarterly industrial trends survey, which shows manufacturing output increasing for the first time in three years and the strongest in eight. During January, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply also reported that manufacturers expect growth in business activity for the first time in two years. John Ling, IMechE Technical Manager, said: “Engineers and all those involved in manufacturing will be encouraged by these results. However, this is not a time to be complacent. The increasing cost of manufacturing in the UK is driving companies to consider moving their production overseas, which will take with it all the associated benefits.” The results of the quarterly survey were gathered in February 2004 from 967 senior IMechE members working within the manufacturing industry. Donaldson Torit will incorporate PGI’s Durapex nonwoven fabrics, used for filtration media, in its first fit and replacement bag-house product line. PGI designed Durapex fabric specifically to meet the US Environmental Protection Agency’s National Ambient Air Quality Standard that sets a limit for particulate matter of 2.5 μm. Durapex is made with PGI’s proprietary APEX technology. This uses web forming and ‘hydro-entangling’ techniques to create a tightly controlled pore-size distribution. Donaldson says that the resulting fabric possesses high filtration efficiency and greater strength than traditional needlefelt materials. The contract was awarded by the District of Columbia Water & Sewer Authority for the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. It involves installing and starting up the complete filtration system for phase 1 of the filter upgrade. The project will provide the plant with a system that incorporates air-water backwash. Leopold will rehabilitate 40 dual-bay filters, totalling 80 filter cells and providing a total filter area of over 7700 m 2 (83 200 ft 2 ). The plant’s average flow capacity exceeds 1470 million litres (390 million gallons) per day, with a peak capacity of over 3200 million litres (850 million gallons) per day. The job includes demolishing existing filter equipment; repairing concrete; installing the company’s Universal Type S Underdrain with Integral Media Support (IMS) Cap, media and an air header piping system; and removing existing wash-water troughs and replacing these with fibre- glass reinforced plastic ones. The Underdrain with attached IMS Cap takes the place of gravel in the filter media configuration. The filter rehabilitation will replace existing media with over 4300 tonnes of anthracite and in excess of 4500 tonnes of silica sand. Modelling, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), will be used to verify proper flow characteristics within the filter system before rehabilitation is begun. Leopold, along with its contracting partners Archer Western Contractors Ltd, C&E Services Inc, Langley Traffic Services Inc and Duffield Hauling is scheduled to complete the project by mid-2007. Once completed, the Blue Plains wastewater facility will be able to better serve the needs of local residents and ensure that the surrounding environment is as clean as possible for local wildlife, plants, and people to enjoy.
