Why UKESF was Established
To reverse the decline in UK students applying for electricaland electronic engineering degrees There has been a 40% drop since 2002 !
To address the threat to UK Electronics design and technologycapability
The UK electronics industry is a world leader 5th largest globally in terms of production European leader in systems design
Home to 40% of Europe’s semiconductor design houses Electronics systems sector employs over 850,000 people
and set to grow It needs talented graduates
To help maintain and grow its market position There is a demand for good graduates!
UKESF Objectives
Working towards a sustainable supply of quality andindustry-prepared graduates
Attracting young people to degree study andprofessional careers in electronics
Connecting employers with young talent at key stagesin their skills development to: Interest them – by raising awareness in schools (pre-16) of the
electronics sector, its profile and careers Attract them – by targeting post-16 students through Summer
Schools to encourage degree study Build Relationships – by linking undergraduates with
companies through the UKESF Scholarship Scheme forsponsorship, practical work experience and mentoring
Secure Employment – for graduating UKESF scholars

What are the Summer Workshops
4-day residential courses run in summer vacations Delivered in partnership with:
Sponsoring companies; and The IET
Aims of workshops: Inform and inspire scholars about the engineering challenges in
design, technology and manufacturing Provide professional development training to complement
undergraduate degree learning Worth 21 CPD hours towards IET professional registration
Provide a visit to see electronics technology in usee.g. in an industrial, medical or entertainment setting
Provide an opportunity to network with other scholars andinspirational engineers from the sector
What happened at the 2014 Summer Workshop
Talks from industry leaders, including: Dez Cass, VP Engineering Continuous Improvement, Selex ES Richard Kirk, Chief Executive, PolyPhotonix Nick Salter, VP Platform Hardware Design, CSR
Interactive professional development sessions Project management Professional & business ethics Effective negotiation Understanding Emotional Intelligence for Optimal Performance Lean Engineering: Design for Manufacture
Work-based team projects with briefs from sponsors Visit to National Centre for Printable Electronics to see:
state-of-the-art facilities for development, prototyping and scaling-upnext generation of products and processes
Summer WorkshopsWhat UKESF scholars thought
Ricardo, University of Southampton, sponsored byBroadcom Being exposed to a diverse collection of successful
professionals gave me a chance to see what career paths arepossible.
I came away from the workshop with a fairly good vision of howI’d like my career to develop.
I was able to talk to various people at the workshop who gaveme advice and important connections.
I was surprised to find myself really enjoying the interactivesessions of negotiation and lean manufacturing.
Summer WorkshopsWhat UKESF scholars thought
Michael, University of York, sponsored by Renesas I just wanted to thank you for a fantastic week, which I'm really
glad I had the opportunity to attend. It was extremely well organised and was clearly run by a
passionate group of people who greatly cared for thedevelopment of every individual there.
It far surpassed my expectations and I took far more from itthan I thought I would have.
Now I'm back at work, I'm sure some of the skills I improvedlast week will be put to good use!
What commitments do UKESF scholars have?
You are expected to: Work for your sponsoring company for each placement that you
agree to when you accept a scholarship offer Meet with your industrial mentor at least twice a year Attend a UKESF Summer Workshop if your sponsoring
company offers that as part of your scholarship Participate in at least one activity a year, during your
scholarship, to promote electronic engineering to schoolstudents
Be willing to assist your university with promoting the UKESFScholarship Scheme to prospective and current students
Submit an annual report to UKESF and your sponsoringcompany for each year of your scholarship
2015/16 Scholarships
25 sponsoring companies Offering at least 65 scholarships
IMPORTANT Many companies award more scholarships than planned where
