CELLS4LIFE COLLECTION PROTOCOL

Please read and follow these instructions carefully

Cells4Life couriers operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

To activate the courier service please call the dedicatedcollection line with your customer number. This number can befound on your kit box and the accompanying dispatch letter.

• In the event of a complicated delivery, failure of collectionor for immediate technical advice during delivery, please callto speak to a medical advisor, available 24 hours a day.

• The collection kit contains materials for the maternal,umbilical cord blood and/or tissue collection. Please ensure,where possible, ALL samples are taken and returned via ourmedical couriers.

• Please note it is the responsibility of the partner or husbandand not the midwife or doctor to arrange for the courier tocollect the sample.

Tear open the sealed Cord BloodCollection Kit packagingas shown.

Using the sterile gauze, removeexcess fluid and debris.

Using the chlorhexidine swabs,liberally disinfect the proposedneedle insertion point.

Insert the needle from onecollection bag into the umbilicalvein close to the cut end. If bloodflow becomes poor or stops, usethe second collection bag insertingthe needle into the umbilical veinclose to its origin at the placentato maximise blood collection.

Allow blood to drain into thecollection bag by gravity flow.Agitate bag occasionally to mixblood and anticoagulant. Milkingthe cord and manipulating theplacenta will help flow.

Lock off the blood line with theattached clamp and knot for extrasecurity. Cut off needles anddispose in sharps bin.IF TWINS ARE DELIVERED ENSURE THEBAGS ARE CLEARLY IDENTIFIABLE

Take maternal blood sample usingthe needle and vacutainer provided.Only one needed for multiple births.If it is not possible to obtain amaternal sample then a sampleshould be taken within 7 days ofbirth and sent to us.

Select an undamaged length ofumbilical cord aproximately 10-15cmlong and cut using scissors provided.

13 Wash gloved hands thoroughly or replace gloves.

Place cord on clean tissue usingforceps and remove excess bloodand debris using sterile gauze.Suspend the cord over tissue withforceps and using sterile gauze‘squeeze’ out as much excess bloodfrom the cord as possible.

Obtain sterile pot and remove lid.Place lid upside down on cleansurface and place cord in pot usingforceps.

17 Empty NORMASOL salinesachets into the pot,enough to cover the cord.Carefully replace lid andcheck for leaks.

18 Write client’s customernumber and date on sideof pot.

Remove security seal and gauzefrom BioPouch. Place collected cordblood and/or tissue with thematernal sample into the BioPouch.Seal as per instructions onBioPouch.

Complete CollectionSummary Form (overleaf).Place form and BioPouchinto kit box and seal usingsecurity label. This is alegal requirement.

21 Activate the courier ASAP bycalling the dedicated couriercollection line and provideyour customer number. Thecourier will provide an ETA forthe collection of the blood.

IT IS THE PARENTS’ RESPONSIBILITY TO CALL THE COURIER ANDMEET THE COURIER TO HAND OVER THE SAMPLE.
