Duration: 3 years (01/08/2009-31/07/2012)

Value: £1,134,442 (fEC) or £907,554 (RC contribution)

Aims and Objectives:

• To become fully connected with top universities and telecom companies in (B)4G

R&D in China.

• To build on the existing substantive collaboration among key UK-China partners

and further strengthen and broaden current research links.

• To create ultimately a UK-China Joint R&D Centre for Future Wireless

wherever they are (Anywhere)

whenever they need (Anytime)

Wireless device and traffic explosion: continued exponential growth!!

4G is not sufficient to accommodate these!

Looking Ahead

Page 24: UK-China Science Bridges: R&D on (B)4G Wireless Mobile ... · UKTI, SDI All the project partners ... IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Integrated Systems

24/40

UC4G Final Project Workshop, Edinburgh, 29-31 May 2012

Spectrum problem: scarce and expensive

Suitable spectrum resource is scarce (UHF: 300 MHz – 10 GHz).

Most suitable spectrums have been allocated/licensed to different applications.

UK 3G Spectrum Auction in 2000: £22.5 billion for 140 MHz bandwidth

Challenge 1: Limited Spectrum

Page 25: UK-China Science Bridges: R&D on (B)4G Wireless Mobile ... · UKTI, SDI All the project partners ... IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Integrated Systems

25/40

UC4G Final Project Workshop, Edinburgh, 29-31 May 2012

A large portion of the spectrum is significantly underutilized (FCC, 2002).

15-80% utilization in bands below 3 GHz and dramatically lower above 3 GHz.

Solutions:

Improve spectrum utilization – Cognitive Radio Networks (white space)

Find new spectrum – Visible light communications (400–790 THz) & 60 GHz

Spectrum Scarcity vs. Spectrum Underutilization

Page 26: UK-China Science Bridges: R&D on (B)4G Wireless Mobile ... · UKTI, SDI All the project partners ... IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Integrated Systems

Challenge 2: Energy Consumption

Time

Voice

Data

Revenue (service dependent

growth)

Traffic Diverging

expectations for

traffic and

revenue growth

Energy consumption of wireless networks is growing rapidly, with the increase

of data rates and numbers of users/area & base stations/area.

• China Mobile has 460K+ BSs (‘09) and will go to 600K (‘10)

• Environment problem: CO2, global warming, etc.

Without energy efficient techniques/architectures, the wireless industry cannot

afford the energy bill with the exponential growth of wireless traffic.

27/40

UC4G Final Project Workshop, Edinburgh, 29-31 May 2012

Other Challenges for B4G

Spectrum efficiency (2-10 b/s/Hz)

Frequency selectivity due to increasing date rates (5G: 10 Gbps peak data rate

for low mobility, 1 Gbps peak data rate for high mobility)

High data rate and high mobility requirements

Seamless coverage and support across different networks, devices, and media

forms

Interference

Diverse QoS requirements

Fragmented user experience: different devices, services, connectivity modes,

cross-industry interfaces

Sum Capacity

• 4G wireless systems promise very high peak rates.

• But, this is only for one user in one cell.

• The key is sum capacity of many users, especially in densely

populated areas.

• In IoT communications, trillions of small devices will create huge

amounts of data that will aggregate and also demand requirements for

extremely high capacity.

• In all cases, sum capacity will need to be increased enormously.

• How can this challenge be met?

Look into 2020: What does a B4G wireless communication network

look like?

• The need for increasing capacity greatly will continue for many years.

• Is the air interface for 5G still MIMO-OFDM?

• How about Large MIMO + Spatial Modulation?

• The underlying energy efficient wireless network architecture should

be reconfigurable and open suitable for ubiquitous communications

while intelligent cognitive devices can cooperate with each other and

adapt their transceiver parameters to optimise communication

performance according to changing radio environments.

IV. UK-China Joint R&D Centre for Future Wireless Networks

Why?

• Wireless communications is a, perhaps the, critical element in future

global ICT strategy (key enabler for Digital Economy), underpinning

many other industries.

• Future wireless communication techniques, e.g., Green Radio, play a

crucial role in the current trend for a low-carbon economy and deserve

intensive research.

• It is therefore extremely important to ensure that the profile and global

influence of the UK is sustained in this area.

• Sustainable and long-term collaboration between the UK and China in

future wireless technologies beyond the UC4G project period

• Complementary strengths of the UK and China

Page 34: UK-China Science Bridges: R&D on (B)4G Wireless Mobile ... · UKTI, SDI All the project partners ... IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Integrated Systems

34/40

UC4G Final Project Workshop, Edinburgh, 29-31 May 2012

Complementary Strengths of the UK and China (1/2)

Strengths of the UK:

• A long history and an excellent reputation for high quality research

• British academia has a tradition of conducting fundamental research,

which leads to a tremendous amount of innovative research results.

• Takes the lead in research on cutting-edge technologies, such as green

radio

• Effective schemes for knowledge transfer and commercialisation in the

wireless communication sector, e.g., Mobile VCE and many successful

spin-off companies like Picochip.

• Very developed and mature consumer market for wireless communications

Page 35: UK-China Science Bridges: R&D on (B)4G Wireless Mobile ... · UKTI, SDI All the project partners ... IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Integrated Systems

35/40

Complementary Strengths of the UK and China (2/2)

Strengths of China:

• Wireless communications is one of the key mid- to long-term topics

supported by the Chinese government. Therefore, it has received a huge

amount of governmental support and funding.

• Chinese academia and research institutes specialise in prototyping and

evaluations of new wireless communication systems.

• Chinese research institutes and companies are actively involved in the

standardisation of wireless communication networks.

• As a result of the high standard of the Chinese high-education system,

China can offer substantial human resources for the R&D of wireless

communications.

• China has the largest potential market for wireless communications.

Functions of the Joint R&D Centre

Provide a virtual platform for research and knowledge exchange on

future wireless networks

Promote collaboration between the UK and China (academia/industry)

Inform consortium members funding opportunities, in particular

International Collaborative Projects

Develop B4G technologies, e.g., Green Communications

Validate these B4G technologies using collaborative testbeds

Knowledge transfer, standardisation, and commercialisation
