going forward together

You can see by the smile on my face, that I enjoyed the launch event for our new Hackney centre hugely, and you can read more about it on pages 4/5. For me, the reason the new centre is so exciting is that it represents so much of what Fairbridge is all about.

The fantastic new facilities, housed in a bright and welcoming building, offer a real contrast to the struggles young people in many of our most deprived communities face. There is also, already, a real positive energy about the place – the kind of environment only passionate staff can create.

But, perhaps most importantly, the new centre also acts as a glowing testament to what can be achieved by working in partnership. The huge impact Fairbridge has on the lives of young people only becomes possible by harnessing the enthusiasm, skill and support of a wide range of partners, something we discussed at our roundtable event in Manchester late last year (pages 8/9).

In 2010 I look forward to continuing the vital partnerships we have with both the statutory sector and our trust, individual and corporate supporters, in fact all the readers of this newsletter. Without them, Fairbridge wouldn’t be able to deliver the real and lasting change for Britain’s vulnerable young people that we know is so vital.

people and staff who’ve made these events so special. This new centre will allow us to increase the number of young people we can help in North East London, so we’re grateful to everyone who’s made it happen.”

Pauline Spearpoint worked her magic on the interior design while the gift of £5,000 worth of furniture from Reed Smith meant the centre was fully furnished. By giving their time, staff from RBS, State Street and Kleinwort Benson Private Bank all helped out with the finishing touches – thank you to you all!

for hackneyit had salsa, poetry, a celeb chef, a treasure hunt and lots of smiles. here’s why the opening of the new hackney centre was a stylish success...

After years of waiting, months of planning (and too many hours to mention of building flat-pack furniture) the Hackney team have finally moved into their new premises. The early part of 2010 saw them host two launch events to celebrate their new home.

At the daytime shindig, they welcomed Hackney Mayor, Jules Pipe, who unveiled the amazing mural, watched a salsa performance, ate tasty canapés prepared by young people and went on a tour of the centre guided by a treasure map.

Shiny new centres don’t come for free and Hackney’s much needed new home wouldn’t have happened without the £50,000 donation from LandAid, which President Mike Slade was proud to hand over. At the evening event, it was also announced that the main training room would be named after LandAid, in recognition of their gift.

Centre manager Chris Murray said: “I couldn’t be more proud of the young

An inspiring and thought-provoking selection of images, videos and music were created by young people from both London teams in a series of photography and digital media workshops.

By providing the young people with the freedom and skills to capture a snapshot of their lives, they hoped to challenge negative perceptions of youth.

The project, called ‘How we see it’, culminated in an event at Tate Modern, where all the photos were displayed and a number of the young people who’d taken part in the course spoke to an impressed and inspired audience.

Last autumn our President, Damon Buffini, chaired a high level roundtable discussion with senior figures from the worlds of politics, media and business. The discussion centred on ways business and the third sector can work more closely together in a bid to make a real and lasting difference to the lives of young people. The highlight was

the contributions of the Fairbridge young people Jonny Poole and Steven Myers (read more about him opposite). They gave the audience a rare insight into some of the challenges facing young people growing up in Manchester and the ways in which Fairbridge has helped them to overcome the barriers they faced.

REPoRting FoR DutyThe recent publication of our report: ‘Engage: Scaling up business engagement with young people’ led to Damon and Andrew co-authoring an opinion piece in The Times about the issues it covered. So why did we write it and what’s it about?

... why?Fairbridge is keen to ensure that the wealth of knowledge we acquire working successfully with thousands of young people each year is captured and helps to inform decision making across the sector and in government. Hopefully it will provide a plan for how we, and other charities, can work more closely with corporate partners in the future.

... what? The report outlines the ways in which businesses and the third sector can work more closely together to deliver improved outcomes, not only for marginalised young people but also employers and employees.

Steven’s storyFairbridge’s tall ship, Spirit, is supported by Bibby Line Group and the challenge it offers the young people is often shared by their staff, who gain team building skills on board.

Steven’s story: “I was referred to Fairbridge by my Early Intervention Team worker because I have an illness called psychosis. On the access course I took part in loads of activities which were fun and helped to improve my communication skills. Since then I’ve gained a food hygiene certificate and many more including First Aid, but my main achievement with Fairbridge is the two weeks I’ve spent on Spirit. I felt really good and relaxed out at sea. I enjoyed the whole time I was on the boat and there wasn’t one bad thing about it. Fairbridge has helped me in lots of different ways. I now have the communication skills and certificates to help me and Fairbridge keeps pointing me in the right direction.”

the wheel dealBeing first to the chequered flag wasn’t the only goal when

these Fairbridge young people built and raced boxcars

At Fairbridge we love it when businesses want to get involved with specific courses; it always adds to the learning. When the West team

challenged the guys at the howies shop in Bristol to a boxcar race – they jumped at the chance, and their involvement led to a great

development opportunity for the four young people involved.

The course saw them taking on the task of building their own four-wheeled racer during a construction day

which took place upstairs in the howies shop. The actual race was held at Arnos Vale Park.

“i was referred to Fairbridge by my school and i’ve been coming for about five months. Because my attendance has been good, i was chosen to take part in the boxcar challenge. i like cars and motorbikes so it really appealed to me.”

“i’d never done any building work before so using the saws and stuff was difficult. We designed the car and learnt to measure up and use all the tools. Fairbridge teaches you stuff while you’re having fun.”

“Race day was great. When we were driving the car, a few people fell off. i didn’t but my teammate Andy fell off once and crystal from the other team fell off every time! i think that must mean our car was better designed.”

“We raced against each other and my team, the howies team, won four out of the six races. victory!”

“i’ve been on loads of other courses with Fairbridge and i’m going to be using the skills i learnt on the boxcar build on a Dig it course, building a shed for the centre’s allotment. i’m hoping to be a gardener in the future so these skills will come in useful.”

Been at Fairbridge: Nine months

Role: Development Tutor (Scale 2)

Wanted to work with young people because: I wanted to help them with their development and getting them on the right path.

Favourite activity: I love climbing but dance and drama are areas I want to do more of. I recently delivered a course where we made a music video which worked brilliantly.

What makes it tough: Trying to get through to young people with a lot of problems and encouraging them to stick with us is tough, but when it works it’s worth it.

Best bit: I love seeing what the young people get out of doing the activities, watching them enjoy it and progress gives me a buzz.

Favourite moment: The music video course was a first for us and I didn’t know if they’d enjoy it. But seeing their confidence grow was amazing. They went from being super-shy to fighting to be in front of the camera!

hobbies: Street dance and climbing.

three words to describe your job: A fun, fulfilling challenge.

Been at Fairbridge: Four years

Role: Development Tutor (Scale 2)

how he came to Fairbridge: I came to Fairbridge as a young person after coming

through 8 months of drug and alcohol rehab. After volunteering for a year I eventually landed a job as a DT and I’ve been here ever since!

What he does: If we’re running a course I help get the kit ready. We go through the young people’s personal development plans and make sure they’ve got a goal, then help them achieve that goal during the activity.

Favourite activity: Football is my passion but I’m learning more and more about climbing, which I love.

What makes it tough: The stories you hear from the young people can be quite emotionally draining.

Best bit: Activities are never the same because every person is unique and reacts differently. I’ve got a job I love doing, so I think I’d best hang onto it!

What would make your job easier: If the number of hours in the day was quadrupled.

three words to describe your job: Very, very rewarding.

Been at Fairbridge: Three years

Role: Development Tutor (Scale 5)

What he does: I manage and work with the other Development

Tutors to create opportunities for young people

to challenge themselves, which will hopefully help them outside of Fairbridge.

Favourite activity: I love gorge walking and coasteering. I think they can challenge people in ways they never imagined and it’s a great opportunity to see everyone as an equal.

What makes it tough: You have to manage your personal time and energy so that you don’t burn out – we try to be there for the young people all the time and can’t be having a bad day.

Best bit: Seeing people achieve something they never thought they could and surprising themselves.

Favourite moment: Seeing young people from our centre actively enjoy overtaking CEO Andrew Purvis in the Nike 10k run! I knew they’d be dying for the next 5km but they had such big grins on their faces.

Dream job: Full time overseas expedition leader.

hobbies: Changing nappies, making a mess with DIY and taking part in adventure races.

hooRAy! Fairbridge came 43rd in the times 100 Best companies list on our first attempt, and out of the charities we came 3rd. knowing how passionate our staff are, we’re not surprised at all!

In April 2008 we received a £3.8 million grant from the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Over three years the grant from the ‘Youth Sector Development Fund’ is being spent on bringing in 49 new frontline staff to our centres in England. In the past year, nine of our teams have grown to the ideal size of 12 staff. Development Tutors make up two-thirds of these ideal size posts.

Fairbridge is growing!

on song for successDeck the halls with fabulous performances and funds for

Fairbridge! it’s the annual christmas concert! And it rocked!

St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge played host to 2009’s Christmas Concert organised by our volunteers in the Special Events Committee. The dramatic setting was matched by the amazing talents of the Eton College Chapel Choir and their barbershop singers, The Incognitos, who were joined by young people from Fairbridge in Kent for a special performance.

Over 600 people packed into the pews to enjoy the festive atmosphere and join in the singing. Thanks to their generosity, we raised £21,000.

As well as musical numbers, the crowd also got to hear about the Fairbridge experience from Jenna and Karl, who joined Fairbridge CEO Andrew Purvis on stage (more about Karl later).

“i owe it all to Fairbridge”karl , 23, Southampton

“I came to Fairbridge in April 2009. I’d been in jail for a year and had no self esteem or confidence. I did an Access course, which involved doing trust-building exercises and shared activities. Within three days I had grown close to the group, who’d all been strangers to me before – I really surprised myself.

Afterwards I took part in a course leading a group of under 16s, something I’d never have thought I could do. Other courses I chose helped me work on my patience and determination to see things through, something I struggled with in the past.

The most amazing thing I’ve done so far was going on the tall ship, Spirit. Sailing her from Portsmouth to Plymouth was hard work, but I learnt a lot about myself. You can’t run away from your problems when you’re stuck on the boat, so you have to deal with them.

During my Access course I made a list of where I wanted to be in the future, and now I’m well on my way to achieving everything on my list. I have a job and I’ve started to rebuild my relationship with my parents, I’m also about to be a dad myself! Now I’m a man with bags of confidence and self esteem and I owe it all to Fairbridge.”

Poetry with purposeEton Choir weren’t the only people performing at the Christmas Concert. Cherene from Fairbridge in London sang a beautiful version of Angels by Sarah McLachlan and then Brendan, Sarah, Lee and David from Fairbridge in Kent took the stage and brought the house down with their own composition, Respect.

They’d spent the previous five days working with performance poet Kat Francois to produce their final work. “It pushed me past a boundary that I’ve been struggling with for ages,” admitted David. “I’d do it again if I had the chance.”

A film about their experiences will be shown as part of the Fairbridge Film and Animation Awards 2010 in April this year.

turning the airwaves orangeit doesn’t get much bigger than interviewing the PM on national radio – good job Fairbridge young people were on hand to make it happen

Fairbridge West’s Fliss, Shazin, Sophie, Vince and Kaya beat off fierce competition to win a place on U Takeover, a pioneering radio project from BBC 1Xtra and BBC Blast.

The project aimed to inspire and develop opportunities for young people not in full-time education, employment or training. Under the guidance of industry professionals and BBC mentors the young people got to try their hand at everything from technical production through to devising and producing a radio show. After a two-week work placement at the BBC 1Xtra studios they helped take over the airwaves on 26 September last year.

The group took the editorial lead in creating and producing 18 hours of continuous content, both pre-recorded and live, including a grilling for the PM. Tim Davie, Director of BBC Audio & Music, was impressed, saying, “The stories of the participants fill me with hope that the effects of these initiatives can be more than merely temporary.”

What did they get out of it?Fliss, 18 who was living out of a car when she first came to Fairbridge, took up the mic to quiz Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the subject of homelessness. “I know how tough it can be to try and get help. That’s why I raised the question,” she said. Fliss has since moved into supported housing and is applying for a number of apprenticeships in media.

Shazin, 24 told us, “It’s not every day that you get the chance to do something like this,” but she did so well during her placement that she’s gone on to secure a paid position as a trainee with 1Xtra!

When eight corporate teams descended on the Adelphi hotel in liverpool to take part in our Zero to Hero challenge there was some serious competition on the cards

When Fairbridge sets a challenge, we like to make it one worth doing. That is why Zero to Hero forces corporate teams to use every ounce of their entrepreneurial skills. They’re given £500 and are tasked with transforming it into £5,000 over four months.

The Merseyside Zero to Hero was a first: instead of just one team, eight different companies sent representatives to do battle. When you’ve got staff from RBS, Baker Tilly, Coutts, Grant Thornton, The University of Liverpool Management School, NatWest, Bibby Line Group and Cammell Laird in the mix – things are going to get competitive. The launch event in November gave them all a real insight into Fairbridge when they took part in some team building activities.

Despite the economic climate the teams have been coming up with amazing money-raising ideas and the current total raised is around £50k. Cammell Laird created a calendar and sold advertising space while Bibby Line Group hosted a successful Christmas fair.

The task culminates with a big celebration event where the winners of the challenge will be announced.
