Operation Overlord was the largest amphibious military operationever launched. The greatest armada the world had ever seen wasassembled to transport the Allied invasion force of over 150,000soldiers across the Channel and open the long-awaited second front against Hitler’s Third Reich. It was the equivalent of movingBirmingham to Berlin. Just after dawn on 6 June 1944, the Alliedtroops assaulted the beaches of Normandy, against stiff Germanresistance. Co-ordinated with the amphibious landings were theairborne and glider landings, carrying out their crucial orders to takekey areas, enable the vital link-up between the beaches and securethe bridgehead. Casualties, especially on Omaha Beach, werehorrendous, but the assaults were successful, and so began thearduous task of liberating Europe from Nazi occupation. This booklooks in detail at the plans and build-up to the operation, and, accompanied by photos, maps and artwork, discusses the events of D-Day in each of the key areas of the operation.

This book looks closely at the early life, military experiences and keybattlefield exploits of Saladin, the greatest hero of the Crusades. Mostchroniclers present him as a man of outstanding virtue, courage andpolitical skill. More recently, however, efforts have been made to portraySaladin as an ambitious, ruthless and even devious politician, and as a lessbrilliant commander than is normally thought. David Nicolle hereshows that the truth lies between these two extremes.
