The UK Asian Film Festival (UKAFF) now in its 21st edition is growing from strength to strength thanks to the zeal and dedication of the team at Tongues on Fire.

I feel really proud and privileged to be part of this unique and inspiring enterprise.

This year’s programme has been curated with imagination to honour the Revolution taking place in South Asian Cinema with new perspectives to current affairs. The MeToo movement is gathering momentum in South Asia, particularly in India and Pakistan, to send a loud and clear message to the world on the need for women’s empowerment.

The Young Curators initiative, the Cinema and Creative Arts Lunch, the richly deserved tribute to Sridevi and a host of powerful and entertaining initiatives promise to make UKAFF truly memorable. Last but not the least, I am particularly pleased to note the recognition and celebration of Pakeezah as one of the masterpieces of Indian cinema. Old is truly gold. I look forward eagerly to the programme and to interacting with you, our audience, and our celebrated guests. All my good wishes to the festival team, our volunteers, partners and audiences for a brilliant and successful festival.

Welcome to the 2019 UK Asian Film Festival, it is a special one for us as we enter our 21st year. We would like to look back to the beginning and celebrate how much our small festival has evolved. The journey would not have been possible without our committed team who continue to maintain enthusiasm and passion for cinema. Their hard work and support is what has grown UKAFF in to becoming an integral part of the cultural scene over the years

Our amazing programme this year includes independent films, documentaries and discussions. These events allow audiences to engage with the vibrant film makers like the Ramesh Sippy, legendary actors like Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman and the new wave of talent like Radhika Apte attending.

We are particularly proud to celebrate the new generation of cinema enthusiasts. They were invited to our BFI young curators workshop. In which they learnt to critique and analyse films, and selected one to be screened at our youth gala during the festival. UKAFF has always encouraged a focus on women and in 2019 we continue to do so. This is at the heart of our festival and specifically now when there a worldwide shift around the narrative of women. While things are changing there still is a troubling blind spot when it comes to women in the industry and we are glad to seek out and celebrate talent in this area. A successful film engages the audience and they feel connected to the individual stories.

Over the years, the programme and events have been able to shine a light on less familiar topics and perspectives in the South Asian community. These stories spark off conversation on many topics including mental health, sexuality and violence against women. I am proud that our festival can bring out this dialogue and with your support we can continue to do so.

Come and celebrate some excellent films this year. Highlights include our opening film Hamid at The May Fair hotel and our selection of feature films and short films at the Regent Street Cinema. Pinky Memsaab is being premiered on Saturday 6 April and is part of the selected collection travelling across the UK to Leicester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Manchester. Finally our Closing Gala will be an evening of glitz and glamour at BAFTA 195 where we will honour the 2019 talent.

Join us in being part of the magic of cinema!

the cinematic journey of

zeenat aman Wed 27 March, 6pmTHE MAY FAIR HOTEL, LONDONincludes reception, talk and screening of Hamid

The UK Asian Film Festival will be opened by the trendsetting actress, beauty queen and reigning star of 1970s - the revolutionary Zeenat Aman - who will also share her extraordinary journey in Indian cinema with British presenter Anushka Arora.

In an era when heroines were obedient wives and lovers on screen, Aman was drawn to more unconventional roles. No one can ever forget the disenchanted pot-smoking hippie in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, the opportunist who leaves her unemployed lover for a millionaire in Roti, Kapda, Aur Makaan, the girl who falls in love with her mother’s one-time lover in Prem Shastra, a disfigured temple singer craving for love in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, and a woman married to a caustic cripple but involved in an extramarital relationship in Dhund. Equally, her conventional films like Chori Mera Kaam, Dostana, Lawaaris and Qurbani are considered to be landmarks in Indian cinema.

Eight year-old Hamid learns that 786 is God’s number and decides to try and reach out to God, by dialing this number. He wants to talk to his father, who his mother tells him has gone to Allah.

Using his father’s old mobile phone, Hamid tries different combinations to reach God. One fine day, the phone call is answered by Abhay, a hard-knuckled soldier. Hamid’s phone call, though surprising at first, intrigues and humours Abhay. These two, unknowingly and unintentionally, change each other’s world for the better.

Sun 7 April, 5.30pm BAFTA 195, LONDON

With a vibrant career spanning 75 years, UKAFF are delighted to celebrate the vibrant career of the legendary director and producer Ramesh Sippy.

Sippy is best known for directing one of the most iconic films in Hindi film history, Sholay, featuring the greatest star cast of it’s time: Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Amjad Khan in his most iconic role as the dacoit Gabbar Singh.

Sippy’s first film job came at age nine, when he played Achala Sachdev’s son in Shahenshah (1953). His directorial debut Andaz (1971) was a blockbuster starring Shammi Kapoor, Hema Malini and Rajesh Khanna in lead roles. Subsequently, Malini propelled her to superstardom playing dual roles in his Seeta Aur Geeta (1972). He directed Dimple Kapadia’s successful comeback to films after 12 years since her debut film Bobby. Saagar (1985) is a changemaker for heroines returning to leading roles after marriage and children.

In 1987, Sippy pioneered a change in Indian television when he directed the successful television serial Buniyaad based on the Partition of India. He was bestowed with a Padma Shri in 2013.

Satyajit Ray in his book ‘Our Films Their Films’ says of her “In her very first film Shabana Azmi establishes herself as the finest dramatic actress in the country.”

Azmi is also highly respected as a social activist and tireless campaigner for the rights of women, slum dwellers and the underprivileged. She heads the Mijwan Welfare Society an NGO that works for empowerment of the girl child in rural India. The north Indian state of Punjab was said to have produced enough food to feed the entire country during the Green Revolution. However, the overuse of chemicals introduced to enhance production has poisoned the water with carcinogens and created an infertile soil addicted to chemicals. As the land is dependent, so are more and more farmers becoming addicted to drugs, which help them to work longer hours in the fields. The expense of the chemicals and drugs forces farmers to take loans from ‘Arthis’, the rich middlemen who increase their interest rates without warning. Over 50,000 farmers have committed suicide in the last ten years, by drinking the toxic chemicals that are murdering Punjabi soil.

_______________________________________________Director: Avani RaiCast: Raghu Rai, Avani RaiIndia, 55 mins, English, Hindi with English subtitles

Tue 2 April, March, 3.30pmREGENT STREET CINEMA, LONDONIncludes Q&A with director Avani Rai

Raghu Rai is known as the ‘father of Indian photography’, and the title is well deserved. In his 50-year-long career, he captured portraits of Indira Gandhi, Mother Theresa and the Dalai Lama, documented disasters, street life, political events and captured powerful forces of nature. His works have become iconic.

His daughter, Avani, joins her father on a photography trip to Kashmir, India’s gaping wound, and documents him as he merges with his subject until, in his words, he himself becomes the sensor. Through her own camera lens, Avani tries to (and succeeds in) understanding her father, who could never express feelings except through a camera. Photographing each other, they create a sensitive, vulnerable, warm and intimate dialogue that casts Rai’s impressive works, showcased throughout the film, in a personal light.

DOCUMENTARY

Kaifinama looks at the life and art of the Urdu Progressive poet Kaifi Azmi. Kaifi Azmi was both a poet for social change as well as one of the foremost lyricists in the Hindi film industry. Not content to limit himself to fine writing, he worked ceaselessly throughout his life as a catalyst for change among the disenfranchised. The film looks at his small-town roots, his commitment to socialism, his wide-ranging body of work and the enormous changes he brought to the life of the village where he was born. This extraordinary journey is documented through extensive interviews with him and his wife Shaukat Kaifi as well as insights from his children - Shabana and Baba Azmi - and reminiscences by his friends and colleagues. Kaifinama thus is both the definitive film biography of Kaifi Azmi and a history of the times he illuminated with his genius.

Based on the story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia who set her husband alight after ten brutal years with him. Sentenced for murder in 1989, she was released after a three-year campaign to bring a significant shift in the way homicide law is interpreted in cases of domestic violence in the Asian community.

To celebrate this momentous year, UKAFF in association with Southall Black Sisters (SBS) is screening four films, one for each decade of SBS history, carefully curated to reflect the central political themes that have informed the work and campaigns of SBS and reflect the migrant experience in this country. SBS is one of the UK’s leading organisations for black and minority women. They have been in existence since 1979. In her debut film, director Vandana Kataria fearlessly grapples the monstrous culture of an elite boys’ boarding school in India.

The boys are abuzz with excitement over the Founder’s Day production of The Merchant of Venice. Drama teacher Murali takes a shine to Shay and casts him in the lead role, while bully Baadal is relegated to understudy – and he resolves to take Shay’s role at all costs.

• £500 would buy new sports equipment to benefi t the children andtheir neighbours in the slum

• £1,000 would ensure the children who live in the hostel have access to running water and electricity for six months

• £4,000 pays for the wages of fi ve teachers for a full year

• £8,000 feeds all 120 children two meals a day for six months

Should you wish to contribute to DMU Square Mile India, please email [email protected] and a member of the team will be in touch. All funds raised directly benefits the children of the Gandhi Ashram hostel and hundreds of children from the slum.

DMU SQUARE MILE INDIAIn February 2016, De Montfort University (DMU) launched DMU Square Mile India, which supports children across five community centres in Ahmedabad, India.

Funds raised support more than120 vulnerable children who live in the Gandhi Ashram, a hostel located next to Ahmedabad's largest slum, Rampair No Tekro. They are provided with two meals a day, clean water, clothing, medical attention and equipment for school.

Without our support the Ashram would be unable to support the children’s health, education and wellbeing, meaning they would have to return to the slum.

Without access to education and food, the children would be required to undertake hazardous jobs and would be deprived of their childhood.

This project is supported by many DMU staff and students, who fundraise and donate monthly to the Sqaure Mile India fund.

We also welcome support from local businesses, in order to ensure these children have a happy life.

If you would like to support DMUs work to help improve the health and wellbeing of these children, please consider the following:
