“When  you  adopt  children,  there  is  usually  a  period  of  time   in  which  the  adoptive  parents  need  to  develop  a  sense  of  entitlement   to  be  the  parents.  Then,  during  that  fragile  time,   someone   tells  you  your  kids  are  not  fully  or  technically   Jewish  just  because   you  adopt  them  and  raise  them  in  your  Jewish  family.   That  can  be  a  real  shock  initially;  however,  we  came   to  understand  the  many  nuances  of  why  we  would  indeed  want  to  take  our  children  to  the  mikveh.  We  went  as  a  family  and  did  the  immersion  ceremony  all  together  in  a  beautiful  mikveh  in  the  Chicago  suburbs.  I’ll  never  forget  the  sound  of  surprise  or  joy  when  one  of  the  Rabbis   in  the  Beit  Din  remarked  about  my  daughter,  “Look!  She  knows  the  blessing!”  It  turned  out  to  be  a  warm  and  memorable   experience.”     ~Tess   Goldblatt

A  MIKVEH  UPON  CONVERTING  A  CHILD:    Converting   a  child   can  be  a  wonderful  experience   for  them  and  for  the  entire  family.    The  process  is  warm  and  welcoming.   A  baby  or  toddler  will   immerse  with  a  parent  who  will   say  the  brachot for  them,  while   an  older  child  may  immerse   by  themselves   or  with  a  parent.

Say hello to Gal and Shachar, our Isreali shlichim (counselors) at Camp Chaverim.

They are part of the uniqueness of our camp experience, providing campers with a daily glimpse of Israel. The Hebrew word of the day is part of their “curriculum”. Indeed, our shlichim come with a suitcase full of surprises, games, and educational materials. More importantly, they build memorable relationships with our campers and counselors.

This Hebrew Word of the Day, “metzil”, means lifeguard, one of the most significant summer jobs on our campus. Nothing is more important than water safety at our ACA (American

Camping Association) accredited day camp. Our “metzilim (plural)” log in a total of 560 hours a summer protecting our campers.

Attaining ACA accreditation status means the UJCVP adheres to the highest standards of safety, programming, and leadership. Hosting Gal and Shachar means we reach for the highest standards of global Jewish connection. Thanks to all of those who support our UJCVP Annual Campaign, as a community we are creating the best day camp possible!

Do you have the soaps, shampoos, and other toiletries that are in your hotel rooms when you travel? People in homeless shelters, centers for abused women and other havens for the less fortunate can always use these items.

Please bring them by the UJC when you can, and they will be distributed to persons in need. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Stan Glasofer at 930 -4606 or [email protected].

There are many words and phrases floating around the news these days that invoke passions and divisions in our society. These include: border walls, global warming, Hilary emails, Donald’s verbiage, Bernie’s socialism, Black Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, Settlements, Brexit, egalitarian prayer at The Wall, the US House, the US Senate, the Supreme Court, Dallas, Minnesota, Baltimore, Baton Rouge, Kiryat Arba, and many, many more. We can all come up with words or phrases that trigger strong emotions in our society and indicate divisiveness amongst groups of people, sometimes leading to seemingly irrational violence. And if we were to follow all the tweets and “breaking news” streams, we might conclude that society as we know it is spiraling into strident groups of opposing forces. And although statistics show we are living in a much safer world overall than in any time in history, the volume level of divisiveness that comes across in the media on an hourly basis is unnerving. Respect, civility, compromise, and cooperation seems to have taken a back seat to confrontation and self-aggrandizement.

Fortunately, in our Peninsula Jewish community we have moved in a different direction. Our new campus collaboration on the site of the UJC could only happen with the embracing of the concept of respect for everyone who supports Jewish community and Jewish peoplehood. For the synagogues who will physically have a home on the campus and for the congregations who are part of our greater community campus, one of the keys to our future success is our ability to respect and support the unique contributions every institution makes to the varied, colorful quilt that is our Jewish community. And by embracing

the concept that all our organizational components are strengthen by supporting a diversity that maximizes opportunities for individuals to find a comfort level of participation in our Jewish community, we are creating an environment that has the best chance of creating and maintaining a thriving Jewish community.

In many ways, our Jewish community is engaged in a potentially transformational experiment: an integrated physical campus supporting three congregations, a Mikveh, a JCC, a Jewish Family Service, and a Federation. And at the same time, we are cognizant of supporting a positive and supportive relationship with the congregations not physically housed on the UJC property. This is not an easy task we have undertaken nor is there a clear blueprint we can look to for guidance. As a small Jewish community, we are creating a model that is in many ways unique. And as we develop this model, starting with our temporary situation prior to construction, we will evolve and grow as experience warrants. The key ingredients to our success to date and our future success will be our continued ability, as a total Jewish community, to respect and honor our differences; dialogue, compromise, and cooperate: traits that unfortunately we don’t see mirrored enough in general society.

“Our new campus collaboration on the site of the UJC could only happen with the embracing of the concept of respect for everyone who supports Jewish community and Jewish peoplehood.”

“I need mayyim hayyim because I used to think mikveh was just a relic from the Old Country – “not me.” The Rabbis say, “To see a grandchild read from the Torah is to see the face of G-d.” After my grandson’s bar mitzvah, “not me” changed to “me” when I immersed for the first time. Mayyim Hayyim was a new step on my Jewish journey. I need it to enhance times of joy and to soften the blow of troubling times.” ~ Quote from a user of a modern mikveh
