Managers Profile: Name: Jonathan (Joe) Cocker

How long have you been involved with Pennine Juniors? 4 years

How long have you been managing a team?

This is my 3rd season as team manager

What is your football background?

I Played Open age Football with the Horse and Farrier in the Bury League (Mainly the 2nd Team very

occasionally 1st Team when they were desperate!) I also Played open aged football in the Rochdale

Saturday League for a number of Years with AFC Spotland winning eventually Promotion to the

Premier League. FA Level 1 Coaching.

What do you find challenging when managing a team? Keeping the kids under control at training!

What do you like most about managing a team? It has to be seeing the improvement of the players

particularly the players that have been with Pennine since under 7’s. Particularly the addition of 3

new players for 2014/15 season has brought a confidence out of the OLD brigade that has not been

seen before.

What has been your funniest/best/most memorable moment? Still has to be the Whites bottom of

the table playing at Westbury who were top and getting a 0-0 draw. But I’ve a sneaky feeling this

season may be one to remember!

Describe your team: Work in progress!!

What are you focusing on in training at the moment? Keeping possession and pressuring the

opposition when they have the ball. Also this year we are learning to play off sides which brings a

whole new challenge.

Tell us about your best game to date and why it was the best: Walshaw away last season won 3-2

....pure football.

What advice/tips would you give to young, up and coming footballers?

1) As with any sport taking part and ENJOYMENT is the biggest and most important aspect of doing

the sport. Winning is secondary.

2) Be disciplined, focused and listen to the coaching Staff and your parents.

3) Never give up, do your best and try and try again until it comes off.

Match reports: Opponent: Bury Amateurs Jaguars Date: Saturday 6th September 9.30 k.o. Venue: Home Matthew Moss Result: 11-2 Match report: Pennine Whites started off the season with an emphatic win over the Bury Amateur Jaguars. With early season optimism high from both teams the match started with some entertaining passing football from both sides. It was clear to see that the pre season training was paying dividends with Pennine playing some neat press and push moves and keeping things simple. Pennines pressure paid off and it was not long before the goals started to come and by half time they were 3-0 up. It was after half time that that Pennine stepped up a gear and from the off it was clear that there were going to be more goals. There were some flowing runs from Ben Huszar and Joey Oldham down the wings which the Jaguar defenders found difficult to control. There was a lot of really neat passing through the midfield which allowed Santi, Huszar and Hassan to reap the dividends and score more goals. From each kick off it was evident that Pennine were not letting up and the pressure on Jaguars midfielders and defenders was creating chaos and indecision in the team. The midfield was generally bossing the game with Sol Robinson and Andy Holyhead clearing up at the back. To the Jaguars credit they did not give up and had opportunities to get back into the game but it was the second half onslaught that sealed the game for Pennine. It would be great to give everybody a man of the match award as everybody played very well and it was excellent to see everybody talking and playing together as a team.

One game does not make a season but I am sure that a few eyebrows will be raised at the result today, there will be more wins and a few defeats but as a start to the season it could not be better and reflects all the hard work that Jonathan has put in as Manager. Match reports:

Opponent: Roach Dynamos Black (Cup Game) Date: Thursday 18th Sept 6.00 k.o. Venue: Home Matthew Moss Result: 0-8 Match report: There was going to be no Giant killing from the Minnows in this preliminary cup match as Roach Dynamos laid out their intent from the onset. With an early injury from the outset Joey Oldham saw most of the game from the sidelines after being brought down after running for goal. It might have made a difference but Roach had other ideas with some direct play and players who were physically bigger and faster up front. Pennine could not weather the storm and the goals came from through balls and long kicks which had the defenders looking at the attackers heels. There were encouraging signs from the midfield and defenders getting to terms with the offside rules which will pay dividends in the long term. Harrison Cocker played well in goal and made a lot of saves to keep the score down. From the onset it was clear that Roach would be a hard nut to crack and on reflection the result was not as bad as we thought, as they have already won 6-1 and 8-2 in the Championship, so they will be giving a few more teams a hard time. The game will no doubt ensure that Pennine will take nothing for granted and will take stock from the way that Roach could bypass our midfield and slice through the defence. We won’t be playing them every week and the taste of this defeat might galvanise them onto greater things…bring on the next match! Managers Mom no award Parents MoM Harrison Cocker

Match reports: Opponent: Seedfield Sports Club Sonics Date: Sat 20th September k.o. 9.30 Venue: Home Matthew Moss Result: 4 -2 Match report: The best way to get over a drubbing is to dust yourself down and get on with the next game and this is what Pennine deservedly did today.

From the onset it was clear that the teams were up for the contest and both teams were evenly matched playing some neat football with some excellent passing and tackling. The football was end to end and at some stage one of the teams would get the breakthrough. After some neat interplay it was Scott Santi who got the shot in. With their tails up high, Pennine moved forward with some speedy wing play from Raza. However it was not as straight as that as Sonics had other ideas and they forced Rhys in goal to make three brave saves; one a particular tricky deflection that stopped them from equalising. Pennines pressure continued and they continued to play well with some excellent passing and shots from Scott and Joey. As the game was drawing to the whistle Scott Santi stabbed in the second and gave Pennine a little breathing space for the half time break. The game kicked off in the second half and both teams continued with some entertaining football and it proved to be Sonics who were more industrious and managed to pull one back; contentiously offside but the goal stood. Oddly enough this proved an advantage for Pennine as Sonics, after this got more frustrated as they failed to come to terms with the rules and lost their positive pattern of play. The game was still evenly placed with some excellent runs up the wing by Ben Huszar causing the Sonics defence a lot of problems ,but the Pennine midfield was equally challenged by some excellent through balls which carved through the defence and caught them both napping. Pennine got a third and it was due to the precise and bullet like throw in’s from Sol Robinson that caused chaos which allowed Tyler Parry to score. This tactic continued and was a constant thorn in the Sonics side. At 3-1 a little complacency set in and this allowed Sonics to compose themselves and with some neat play in midfield, caught the midfielders flat footed and once again through the defence allowed them to score. The game at 3-2 Sonics really sensed a result was waiting and it was only a matter of time that they would get the equaliser and a possible win. However they did not contain the speed and skill of Lucas Dowd, who upped his game and carved through the midfield causing them problems with stinging shots. Sonics still caused problems and it was Rhys (with his newly acquired lucky shirt!!) that saved the day with some more brave saves from advancing Sonic forwards. Pennine eventually got the goal to clinch the game and it was once again from the accuracy of Sol’s throw in’s that allowed Ben Huzsar to move into a position to make it 4-2. Congratulations to both teams on an excellent game and one which ultimately might have an importance at the end of the season. Well done to both Managers. Mom ……..Ben Huzsar Parents MoM Joey Oldham

Pennine soon got the match under way with a couple of shots from Sol and Scott. Initially Pennine had the better of the game with some solid play at the back from Lucas Dowd and Tyler Kneale at the back. However it was Radcliffe who took the lead with a header which was well taken after some tricky play from their number 5. Pennine then realised they had a game on their hands and shots from Lucas, Raz and a stinger from Sol that fiercely struck the underside of the bar and on any other day would have rolled in. Pennine continued to play well at the back and with some neat play Scott ran through and was bundled over in the penalty area and with the resulting penalty calmly slotted it in the left hand side. This seemed to energise Pennine and some chances were missed with Foggy just missing a header in the area that would have been goalbound if he had connected. Both Raza and Scott had attempts that went wide. Eventually the pressure paid off and with some pinpoint passing from Tyler allowed Scott to break through and get the second. Pennine sensed they could increase the lead and shots from Lucas and Tyler Parry nearly got the third. However it was Scott who topped off the half with the third and his first hat trick of the season. There could have been a fourth as Pennine played some ding dong football in the Radcliffe penalty area. Radcliffe did attempt to recover the deficit and it was Joey Oldham who made three consecutive saves to keep the score 3-1 at half time. In the second half Radcliffe put on the pressure with some neat work from their number three and five but Pennine had shots from Andy Holyhead and Raza that just went wide. Rhys Mansfield was have a busy time in goal and made three of his trademark saves as the forwards rushed at him. Pennine then did some ball watching admiring the play from Radcliffe which allowed them to get a second. Shortly after this Lucas tumbled a Radcliffe forward over in the box which resulted in a penalty. At this time the game could have gone either way and fortunately Rhys magnificently saved the kick. After this Pennine came back into the game with shots from Sol, Scott and Joey, the game was opening up for both sides with some entertaining football. Joey Oldham finally made the game safe with a neatly taken lob over the keeper to make it four. After that Pennine calmly saturated any Radcliffe attempts with some solid defending and calm play seeing the game to its end. Credit must go to both teams on playing a really entertaining game of football with fast flowing and pacey football that makes early starts on Saturday well worth it for everybody. To-day was the top of the table Match of the Day in Division 2 and from the onset it was clear that Pennine would be facing stern opposition as Walshaw appeared to have a couple of lads who looked like they would dominate in defence and midfield. The game started off evenly matched with the first shot to Walshaw. It was not long before the Wolves midfielders caught the Pennine defence with a long ball to make it 1-0. Pennine upped their game and started to pose a few problems with shots from Raza, Santi and Tyler and later Raza missed an opportunity which he normally would have slammed in. However it was not all Pennine and Walshaw did push forward making Joey pull off a great save but with their midfield sensing a way through got another on the break to make it 2-0. It was looking bleak for Pennine and one wondered if this was going to be one of those days when Joey would be picking the balls out of the back of the net. However football is a funny old game and this is when Pennine started to go back to basics and realised that they can play good passing football which can really hurt the opposition. Vitalised Pennine produced attempts from Raza, Lucas and Tyler that galvanised the attack and it was only a matter of time before Pennine would pull one back. From some neat passing Tyler crossed the ball into the penalty and Lucas scuffed the ball into the net to make it 2-1. Pennine pushed forward and sensed they would get something before half time with through balls from Sol and a fierce shot over the bar from Foggy and further attempts from Raza knocking it wide. Pennine did move forward and Lucas will be thankful that we did not get his miss to download onto U Tube as we would play it at Christmas for all your family to share! The half time pep talk from Jonathan did the job as from the kick off Pennine shifted a gear and immediately good play from Raza and Sol resulted in a couple of shots, one from Sol that the Walshaw keeper superbly turned over the bar. Pennine were awarded a free kick outside the area and it was time for Lucas to make amends which he justifiably did by thumping the shot into the Walshaw goal 2-2. Pennine sensed it might be their moment and tactical switches seemed to be working with Joey galvanising the midfield and the two Tyler’s playing tenacious football. The goal did come with a shot from Sol which made it 3-2. However it was not all Pennine and Walshaw were unlucky not to equalise but some good positioning from Rhys in goal denied them. The fourth goal was an absolute delight and there are moments of magic that we encounter on Saturday mornings and this was one; with some dynamic running from Tyler passing to Sol who turned the defender and magnificently passed to Raza who poked it in to his delight as a reward for all his hard work. It was not all over for Walshaw as they pushed forward and Daley struck the ball so hard that it looked like Rhys would be carried through with it; however in Rhys as ever calmly dealt with it. It was then that Santi reminded us that he was the top goal scorer and with a confident run on the break calmly ran and slotted the ball in to make it 5-2. The satisfying aspect about this game was not the result but the resilience of the team and in particular, the way they played together. Mentions should go to the two Tyler’s,

one who read’s the game, contained the attackers and pushed forward and the other who played like Alan Hansen, (ask your Dad!), with some deft touches that were calm and deliberate and that is what makes a team! Looking forward to the next game M.o.M Lucas Dowd Parents MoM Raza Hussan

Match reports: Opponent: Chadderton Park Dragons Date: Saturday 10th October 9.30 k.o. Venue: Home Oldham Result: 0-1 Match report: This was top of the league versus bottom, what could go wrong!!!! Pennines top scorer was not available and on a smaller pitch than normal made for an interesting contest. Looking at the league positions gave a false picture of what would happen and this was going to be the Dragons day! It was evident from the kick off that both teams knew they had a game on and Dragons sensed there could be an upset on the cards. Chaddy pushed forward and made Tyler make a save after from some incisive play, but Pennine replied with a couple of shots from Tyler Parry and Raza. It was then that Dragons caught the defence napping and Dragons no.11 ran through to put them 1-0 up. Normally Pennine would make a come back with an attack but Dragons went forward again and forced another save from Joey; the first half came to a close with Ben and Lucas running through with a close offside. The second half saw Chaddy making a quick break to make certain of the game but after that it was a matter of Pennine going forward and wanting to score the equaliser. With the absence of the top scorer it was evident that there was a determination to score but they wanted to do it in spectacular fashion with shots that went way off the mark. However there are moments of what could have been and one is Tyler Parry’s overhead kick that hit the crossbar, totally wonderful and one you will remember for a long time. After that it was Chaddy messing the midfield up for Pennine and letting them come forward. A shot from Ben followed then another from Andrew reflected the determination in the team. Dragons moved forward and were just wide; Tyler went wide with a shot, Lucas just wide, a save from the Chaddy goalkeeper from Sol; more from Sol and Tyler; it was not going to happen. However it was not all Pennine, as Joey stopped one attack with a deft turn on the Chaddy defender and with a nonchalant flick up field, saw Sol snatch a shot which went narrowly over the bar.

Match reports: Opponent: Warthfold Utd Date: Saturday 18th October 9.30 k.o. Venue: Home Matthew Moss Result: 4-0 Match report: From the kick off both teams played some football that was easy on the eye with some connecting passes showing that it was not going to be one way stuff. The first break went to Joey who just shot wide; this was immediately followed by a Warthfold break which was deemed just offside. Tyler Parry almost broke the deadlock with a toe poke with some ping pong football in the Warthfold area. Next up it was Joey again with a shot and then Scott Santi made the goalkeeper pull off a brilliant save with a stinging shot. Pennines corners delivered by Tyler Parry posed problems in the Warthfold defence but Pennine insisted on playing pin ball in the area to no avail. It was time for Raza to step up with a run and shot, this was followed by a snap shot from Joey which flew in the goal behind the nets. Ben Huzsar then looked to have got the first but it pinged off the post. It was not all Pennine as Warthfold looked increasingly dangerous on the break and fortunately some good work at the back by Foggy, Haydn and Tyler Kneale kept the score 0-0. Warthfold got a break and put it over the bar. Ben continued his runs and only for a goaline clearance from the Warthfold number 11 kept Pennine at bay. It was then time for Harrison to come into the game with a fine save that proved important. Lucas ran up the pitch from a quick ball but his shot was mistimed and the teams went into the break 0-0. The game started with some tactical changes with Lucas Dowd playing a deeper role and Sol coming on to push forward with attacking runs. Warthfold pressured Harrison to make a fine save to keep Pennine on their toes. After the changes it looked good for Pennine as they pushed forward with a shot from Tyler Parry, a header from Sol and a fine effort from Andy Holyhead. Warthfold then made a push and what could have been a game changer, narrowly pushed a chance wide past the oncoming Harrison. The first goal finally came from Joey as he shot through a packed defence; after this Sol started the first of his marauding runs that split Warthfold open on the right wing. Warthfold did have one more breakaway but alas the striker hammered it over the bar. Harrison was called on to do some cool handling of the ball but the game was gradually moving in Pennines favour. Scott Santi broke but was equally marshalled by a Warthfold defender who throughout the game was a constant shadow for Scott and denied him space throughout.

Page 11: Ui2s white

Page | 11

The second goal came from one of Tyler Parry’s pin point corners that allowed Sol to slam one in from close range. It looked over for Warthfold but they did have a couple of chances which Harrison comfortably dealt with in goal and one that Haydn cleared from the back. It was then time for Pennine to move up a gear and up stepped Joey with a shot that just went wide. It was then for Tyler Parry to take over and his determination with five consecutive shots showed that this boy meant business. However Santi had other ideas and he turned his shadow and popped in a delightful shot into the top corner of the net from outside the area. Warthfold did have a couple of breaks leaving the Pennine defence flatfooted and exposing weaknesses at the back as Pennine pushed too far up the field. It was then time for Sol to continue his powerful runs up the wing which left the Warthfold defence standing and with some good interplay with Raza, culminated in the fourth after Sol struck it in with his left foot. Hungry for more it was now the ‘Sol show’ as he eagerly went for his hat trick but was denied by the keeper who bravely saved and another that struck the top of the post with such force that it lifted the goals. 4-0 at the final whistle and Warthfold will be going away thinking what if we had put away our early chances. It was a match that everybody put in a shift and can be pleased with the efforts they put in. M.oM. Tyler Parry Parents M.oM. Sol Robinson

Match reports: Opponent: Bury Amateurs Tigers Date: Saturday 25th October k.o. 11.00 Venue: Home Drinkwater Park, Prestwich Result: 11-3 Match report: From the kick off Tigers nearly caught the Pennine defence napping with an early attack but unfortunately for the Tigers this was going to be a day when they were well and truly tamed. After this early scare Pennine moved up and Scott Santi stuck a shot which deflected from the right post and forced the goalkeeper into an early save. Andy Holyhead moved up with a fine shot, followed by another from Tyler Parry. The deadlock was soon broken after some fine passing from Rhys allowed Scott to slot it past to the goalkeepers right. After this Pennine bombarded the Tigers goal with two shots from Scott keeping the goalkeeper busy. The attacking play was relentless and with crosses from Sol causing mayhem in the Tigers area. Shots from Ben and some great interplay between Joey and Ben, allowed him to strike a thundering shot into the top of the net to make it 2-0. After this it was all one way stuff with the keeper saving from Scott but more was to come from a solid shot from Sol into the net, and a coolly taken goal from Scott ghosting past the keeper to make it 4-0.

Page 12: Ui2s white

Page | 12

It was not all Pennine as Harrison was called to make a save ensuring that he was concentrating and not just being a spectator. The next goal was a header from Scott expertly taken. It was now exhibition stuff with Pennine pushing and passing with Tyler Kneale on the back wing, dodging and weaving across the pitch creating moves forward. There was some good play between Sol and Raza which allowed him to poke one in at 6-0. Pennine stepped up a gear and with only the keeper to beat, Joey made the keeper pull off a great save. The Tigers goal was peppered with shots from Sol, Tyler Parry and one excellent back heel from Joey to Scott saw him scrape the post. Tigers then stepped up to get a consolation goal with a superbly taken header to make it 6-1 going into half time. With the start of the second half Tigers started brightly, but it was not long before Pennine moved up and with a stylish back flick from Joey to Scott saw him just going wide. It was not long after that Scott added to his tally from a well placed pass from Ben put him through to make it 7-1. After this was the most bizarre moment of the match as Scott delivered an exquisite overhead kick that most of the spectators thought had gone wide, hence no celebrations however 8-1 is was. Tigers tried to get in on the action, and it was only a header from Rhys that denied them. Tigers applied themselves a lot better in the second half and could have added a second, but the Pennine goal machine continued with a solid assist from Joey to Ben ensured he whacked it in. This was followed by Joey making the keeper perform a great save to keep the score down. It was time for Raza to add to his tally with a shot into the top corner. Credit to Tigers as they kept on, and got rewarded after some tricky work on the wing with a goal that caught the Pennine defence flatfooted 10-2. Ben added to another to reach his hatrick with a toe poke which was a reward for his outstanding performance up and down the wing. Tigers had the last say, forcing one of the Pennine defenders to head the ball into his own net, but we shall not name who it was! At 11-3 it was game over but Raza finished with a shot just wide to deny him his third. Overall it was a stunning performance, and possibly the best first half this season and credit goes to all for the work they put in. Bring on the next game, as there is yet more to come from this team who are still developing and are hungry for more! MoM Joey Oldham Parents MoM Ben Huszar

Match reports: Opponent: Tournament Oldham Greenhill Date: Sunday 9th November Venue: Oldham Match report: With the Saturday game postponed it was fortunate that the team got a bit of match practice in. Seedfield Sonics managed to get a match in and claimed top spot in the division with a win over Radcliffe Blues, who are indeed suffering a bit of a blue spot with

Page 13: Ui2s white

a few hiccup results that may prove important when it comes to the last few games. However that keeps it close and interesting and that is why we get up in the mornings! The tournament was held at Oldham Greenfield and it was quite impressive given the amount of teams that turned up and a great source of revenue for Greenfield who are quite proactive in resourcing funds. The tournament provided Pennine with more than a significant challenge, as we were given the opportunity to put ourselves against higher opposition who play in other Lancashire leagues of Premier levels. This gave us a great run out and with quality clubs such as Radcliffe Borough, Dukinfield Youth, Totton and Eagley, all doing well in their leagues it proved a little eye opener for our players who encountered more skill, speed and physical play than they encounter on most Saturdays. The games were tough and as the tournament progressed Pennine came to terms with the small pitch and put in some creditable performances but were not able to make it through to the final rounds. Overall it was a great day and making sure that they got some match practice will have benefits for the next few weeks.

Match reports: Opponent: Elton sports Club Jaguars Date: Saturday 15th November 11.00 k.o. Venue: Home Close Park Result: 11-3 Match report: After a few traffic diversions it was a close run thing that Pennine managed to get a full team together; so 1-0 to the dedicated parents before the match. Looking at the pitch there was a little trepidation as the grass was so long that going back to grass roots football and the possibility of lots of hoof ball stuff. However at the kick off Elton started the brighter and were on the break from the whistle, but it was not long before Scott Santi made the keeper aware that he was the clubs top scorer with a shot. Not long after it was 1-0 from the prolific Santi to shoot past the keeper. After this it was one way traffic as Pennine mastered the conditions and not relying on the long played good passing football, with some good interplay between Joey and Raza this culminated in another Santi goal 2-0. The dominance continued and with more positive forward play Joey passed to Santi to make it 3-0. However it was not all Pennine and Jaguars pushed forward to make Harrison make a save at the other end. Raza had other ideas and after being caught offside he made amends with a fine assist to guess who? Yes! Scott Santi to make it 4-0. Well enough was enough and it was not going to be the ‘Scott Santi Show’, as Ben Huszar was introduced to make his mark! As soon as he came on he got a shot on target with a great save from the Jags goalkeeper. The substitution energised everybody and there ensued a header from Joey which was saved this was shortly followed by a fierce shot from Tyler Parry ooh! over the bar; Sol shooting wide, Huszar hitting the post. It was not long before Sol got one from a cracking

Page 14: Ui2s white

Page | 14

blast of an assist from one side of the pitch from Lucas which allowed him to slot it into the goal 5-0. It was not all one way as Pennine lost concentration and allowed the Jags to get a great break away to make it 5-1, but the Pennine goal machine continued with Raza forcing a great save from the goalkeeper. Joey shot wide and then a magic moment saw Lucas racing through the midfield after an assist from Raza to carve his way through , thumping it in the goal to make it 6-1. So far it has been all about the attack, but a mention should go to the defence with Haydn, Tyler K, Foggy all playing their part in pushing forward. The half time came with a well placed goal from a Jags corner to make it 6- 2. This was followed by Sol knocking in a scrappy goal to make it 7-2. It could have been more as once again Raza made the keeper make a great save (Come on Raza!) After this, it was mostly one way as Ben Huszar shot in off a rebound 8-2; Scott tried a cheeky shot but some unselfish work from the top scorer allowed Ben to make it 9-2. There was some outstanding play from Foggy at the back and with Harrison coming outfield allowed him to produce a magnificent cross that caused chaos in the Jags defence rebounding into the goal (your goal mate!) 10-2. Ben then spurred a fantastic run through to make it 11-2 but by then Pennine lost all shape and turned into hyenas and wanted to get in on the goal frenzy! This allowed the Jags to score a wonderful goal passing through the defence with ease to make it 11-3. For a moment the momentum was lost but Andy Holyhead took the initiative and sent Sol forward to make a shot and this was followed by Tyler Parry whacking an unstoppable one over the bar. Well it was job done; difficult pitch, but it has to be said that the Jags played with a passion that is admirable and they managed to score three goals! The team is still developing but it is great to see that they are playing passing football and remember on Friday nights please concentrate and listen to the manager, as we have a few hard matches to come; as you are now the team everyone wants to beat! Match reports: Opponent: Elton Sports Club Jaguars Date: Saturday 22nd November 9.30 k.o. Venue: Home Matthew Moss Result: 7-1 Match report: It was part two of the meeting with the Jaguars, and from the off it was clear that the Jags were not going to be an easy push over as they started the play with some dogged determination. The football was easy on the eye and it did not take long before Lucas made the Jags keeper pull off a great save. Sol was playing his usual silky skills on the wing and some neat interplay between Joey and Lucas finalised in a shot just wide of the post.

However it was that boy Scott Santi who made the first goal with a fine header after an excellent assist from Andy Holyhead 1-0. Soon after this Joey rattled the post and Sol got in a shot that the keeper managed to palm away. The football was neat and confident, and with Foggy marshalling the offsides with a maturity beyond his years, it was not long before Pennine moved up. Joey harassed the Jags defence, and with a fine pass allowed Santi to literally wallop it into the net 2-0. Pennine were eager for more and with a surging run from Lucas nearly made it three after a deflection off a Jags defender. It was not long after that, a simple mistake by the Jags keeper allowed Santi to calmly nip the ball in to get his hat trick; cool calculated stuff by the clubs top scorer 3-0. Ben was surging up the wing and causing much frustration for the Jags defence, but it was Andy Holyhead who took the game by the scruff of its neck, and pile drived a magnificent shot past the Jags keeper leaving him no chance 4-0. Pennine moved on, and there were shots from Lucas after runs across the goal by Joey. Ben had a thundering shot ricochet off the bar only to see Joey neatly collect it and hammer it into the net with a nicely taken half volley 5-0. It was then all one way as Pennine surged forward with some neat football. Santi made the goalkeeper pull off a great save; Raza put in a neat shot, another shot cleared off the line from Santi; an overhead kick from the same just wide and another from Raza exercising the keeper. However there was a carbon copy of the Jags goal from last week as they sliced through the Pennine defence to score a very well crafted and deserved goal. There was going to be no come back as the defence who had other ideas with Tyler K playing cool and solid back play, soaking up the Jags pressure. Pennine then got a penalty, and one of the seasons rare event; a Scott Santi penalty miss just wide to go into half time at 5-1. The Jags started the brighter after a pep talk by their coach; which seemed to galvanise them and create a better sense of shape and form that they took to Pennine. Rhys in goal was kept busy as the Jags broke through a few times. Pennine seemed a little ruffled and the positive passing play was not as evident as the Jags harangued them more. It was ebb and flow stuff, but Pennine kept up the pressure. Lucas struck a free kick that stung the keeper’s palms and Raza on a few occasions came close. Santi had a close header saved and Harrison was causing problems down the wing. It was then time for Lucas to really monster the midfield with a thundering run down the centre to slam in the ball 6-1; nobody was going to get in the way of this raging bull! This was followed by a shot from Joey which was going goal bound only to be saved brilliantly by the keeper. Haydn was mastering the defence at the back and with some neat interplay with Tyler K to make sure that the Jags attack was frustrated. The game was not over as there were further attempts from Ben shooting just wide; Raza putting wide after some rinky dink stuff from Sol on the wing! It was up to Sol to close the game and after some good pressure from Raza and some more dominant play from Lucas allowed Sol to slam in the final goal 7-1. Game over and with some improved play from the Jags, made for an entertaining game, but as a point we must learn to concentrate in the game and not allow the opposition to take the momentum, as there are some games coming up that might find us faulting if we allow them to break so easily

Match reports: Opponent: AFC Dobbies Date: Saturday 14th February 9.30 k.o. Venue: Home Matthew Moss Result: 3-1 Match report: Pennine returned to match action after a continental style break, our last match was on the 22nd November so it would be difficult to see which team would turn up. The meet up against AFC Dobbies would be testing as their table position hides what a tough match it would be. From the kick off both teams fought hard to come to terms with the slightly bumpy pitch and the fine art of passing was going to be at a premium. It was Pennine who made the first strikes with shots from Lucas and Joey just over the bar. It was not all one way traffic as Dobbies nearly caught Pennine on the break with the midfield looking rather flat. However it was Andy Holyhead who forged forward with a cross that had the Dobbies goalkeeper flapping which allowed Lucas to slot the first goal home to make it 1-0. There were some good touches of play between Scott, Raza and Joey all playing some neat passing football but it came to nothing. In goal Harrison decided that he would emulate Manuel Neuer in goal and with his sweeper keeper role, kept the scores level with some fine commanding one to one interventions out of his area. There was some fine running by the forwards particularly with Raz running diagonals across the area confusing the Dobbies defence. Dobbies did appear to be gaining the momentum but some fine concentrated play by Haydn made sure that it was not going to go be an easy morning for them. Dobbies forwards sensed that there was something to be had by running through the fragile Pennine defence but some poor finishing ensured that they gave up at least three excellent chances that may have put the match out of the reach of Pennine. It was clear that Pennine had a battle on and with Sol running up the right wing whilst finding the attention of the Dobbies defenders frustrating and closing down his options, it was then up to Joey to calmly collect a ball ten yards from the half way line and float it across the Dobbies defence into the left hand side of the goal bouncing off the post to make it 2-0. From Joey’s celebration it was obvious that he meant it, but just before half time we didn’t care! After half time tactical substitutions had been made and from the onset Tyler Parry made his presence felt with a cracking shot just over the bar. Harrison in goal kept up his keeper sweeper role, but he could do nothing about the Dobbies goal as the Pennine defenders lost their legs and forgot about running back and watched in admiration the striker’s heels as the score got back to 2-1.

Page 17: Ui2s white

Page | 17

Dobbies sensed a comeback and it was once again up to Harrison to save the day with his sweeper keeper actions with determined movement and presence of defence to stop the attack. After this Pennine galvanised themselves and with some organised play put Dobbies under pressure with excellent corners from Tyler Parry . It was then that Scott Santi realised that he had not scored a goal and this would spoil his record of scoring in every league match he has played in and with the most delicate touches managed to poke it home to finish the match at 3-1. This was an important match as Dobbies put up a most determined fight and went home thinking if only!! MoM Harrison Cocker Parents MoM Joey Oldham and Lucas Dowd

Match reports: Opponent: Bury Amateur Panthers (Subsidiary Cup) Date: Saturday 28th February 11.00 k.o. Venue: Away Drinkwater Park Result: 1-6 Match report: The potential of a cup upset was put on hold from the onset as the pitch was very heavy and it would prove to be an advantage to the Panthers as they were experienced at playing in these conditions and would be better suited to combating the energy sapping pitch. The match started evenly but Panthers got a quick break and from the attack they made it 1-0. Undeterred Tyler Kneale put in a shot which was excellently saved by the keeper. Panthers continued to move forward and after a bit of ball watching from the midfield the score was suddenly 2-0 unfortunately Harrison could only parry the ball into the net after a good attempt at saving it. Pennine decided that Panthers would not have it all their own way and counteracted with Lucas moving the play and just missing with some good opportunistic play. Just as Pennine looked like they were getting back into it Panthers responded with a superb free kick on the edge of the area to make it 3-0. Shortly after it could have been four, but a great save from Harrison kept it to three. Pennine then showed a bit of bite and with some good interplay from Joey allowed that man Santi to slot the ball home before half time. Lucas just shot wide as Pennine became more revitalised, but unfortunately the referee blew for half time before they could capitalise. Ben got the proceedings underway in the second half forcing the keeper into another excellent save. Panthers then made Harrison make a couple of saves to keep the scores down. Pennine were now finding the pitch heavy going and this started to sap their energy and even with Sol making some fine runs they could not get that flowing football going. Panthers got a corner which resulted in another goal as the defence lost concentration to make it 4-1.

Page 18: Ui2s white

Page | 18

Pennine however did not give up and with Ben and Sol running down the wings there was always a chance. Foggy and Tyler Parry worked well in trying to command the midfield and Joey did a fine clearance off the line, but shortly after Panthers made it 5-1 after a lack of concentration and tiredness at the back. Shortly after that Panthers ran through to make it 6-1 and ultimately closed the contest and ensured that Jonathan’s bottle of Brasso would not be needed for this piece of silverware. Overall the 6-1 flattered Panthers and to reflect it was great to see everybody keeping their heads up, battling with physically bigger and faster players and showing a disciplined understanding of offside to frustrate Panthers. Match reports: Opponent: Warthfold Utd Date: Saturday 7 March 10.30 k.o. Venue: Redvale Radcliffe Result: 9-3 Match report: It was back to the bread and butter of league football and Pennine showed their intent from the kick off with Lucas making the goalkeeper pull off a fine save. The pitch was very bumpy and the undulating surface caused Pennine a few problems and the ball bobbled and the surface did not help Pennines passing play. It was not all one way as Warthfold pushed forward but on most times they were dealt with by Haydn who was dealing with everything that they threw at him. There were further shots from Scott and Lucas with Joey putting one over the bar. The Warthfold defence was split open by some fine dribbling skills by Lucas but it came to nothing. The first goal was coming with Scott shooting wide but a good pass from Haydn allowed Scott through to make it 1-0. Foggy was playing well at the back and coordinating the offsides which constantly frustrated the Warthfold attacks. Some fine interplay from Joey put Sol through to make it 2-0. It was then that Warthfold showed some teeth and with a perfectly crafted piece from a quick throw in made it 2-1. Things were finely balanced but shots from Joey, Lucas and Haydn kept the score to 2-1. Warthfold broke through and a fine save from Harrison kept Pennine ahead before half time. The second half opened up with Warthfold using the wind to their advantage and it was not long before a shot in off the post left Harrison flatfooted to make it 2-2. Warthfold threatened to maraud the midfield but Sol neatly turned in a tap in to make it 3-2. Pennine sensed they had a game on and tried to increase the lead with shots from Rhys, Scott heading wide and Lucas scraping the post. Warthfold used the wind effectively and finally got the equaliser with a finely taken free kick that powered into the top of the goal to make it3-3.

Page 19: Ui2s white

Page | 19

It was then Warthfold sensed a way forward but then Joey moved back and in coordination with Foggy used physical play and timely tackles to frustrate the eager Warthfold forwards. A moment of sheer class from Sol with a fine tee up shot into the net made it 4-3. Joey followed this with a simple tap in to make it 5-3. After this Pennine comfortably put away everything as they moved forward with Lucas making it 6-3, Scott got the next 7-3 and Tyler Kneale whacked one in to make it 8-3. The final goal was total football with Scott polishing off a fine movement to make it 9-3, game over. All credit to Warthfold who will look back and think how this game finished 9-3 when we played so well and at no time did their heads drop or lose discipline. Match reports: Opponent: Radcliffe Juniors Blues Date: Saturday 14 March 9.20 k.o. Venue: Matthew Moss Result: 2-1 Match report: An early start at home saw Pennine depleted of Scott and Foggy; this was possibly going to be a tough match to contend with. From the onset the two teams played some good close football and competed for everything. Pennine looked a bit sluggish at the back for the first five minutes and Radcliffe dominated with some surging runs. Joey at the back managed to consolidate the defence with some good marshalling and things then tightened up and Sol got in an attempted overhead kick from a cross neatly turned by Ben. Tyler Parry got in a slightly wayward shot that would have taken the net skywards if it would have been on target and this was closely followed by a shot from Joey. Sol was gifted a chance, which he calmly missed and it started to look like it was going to be one of those days. Tyler parry stung the goalkeepers hands with a free kick which was fumbled and on another day would have been slotted away. Both teams continued to fight for every ball and the play resulted in shots from Joey, Andy Holyhead and a through run from Sol that came to nothing. Lucas forged forward and it looked like the deadlock would be broken but the finish sailed over the bar. It was not all one way as Harrison was called on to pull off a fine diving save to his right. Tyler Parry shot over once again and then Raza jinked and turned up the wing to cross to Sol who calmly slotted the ball home 1-0. Joey was called on a couple of times to get the last touch of the ball from the sprinting Radcliffe forwards. As half time was coming Sol nearly slotted one home from a corner which would have made things a lot easier.

Page 20: Ui2s white

Page | 20

The second half started with much of the same tempo, shots from Tyler’s, Raza, Joey and Sol just going wide. Pennine conceded a free kick on the edge of the area and fortunately Radcliffe blazed it over the bar and would rue the opportunity later in the game. The link up between Raza and Sol was working well and Pennine started to dominate. The forwards started looking a lot hungrier and Raza nearly took the cross bar apart with a stinging upright shot that would have normally gone in on another day. From a corner Sol made it 2-0 with a soft touch to foil the Radcliffe defence. Radcliffe got one back from a short corner and indecision at the back to make it 2-1; they then moved with more urgency and Pennine anxiously played away the last few minutes on the back foot as Radcliffe looked for that elusive equaliser. At the final whistle Pennine sighed with relief and reflected on fine performances from everybody with Haydn, Tyler Kneale and Rhys all putting in a hard shift to achieve the hard formed win. Match reports: Opponent: Bury Amateurs Tigers Date: Saturday 21st March 9.30 k.o. Venue: Home Matthew Moss Result: 3-0 (Match awarded to Pennine) Match report: Sunny weather, ideal conditions for a perfect football match were dashed when the Tigers scratched the game at the last moment leaving Pennine with an open Saturday. However the points have been awarded to Pennine with a 3-0 result. It was a shame as Pennine have been keeping up the momentum and would have preferred to play with the table topping match with Seedfield coming up next week. The highlight of the weekend was clearly the late surge from Walshaw Park with a 1-0 away win over Dobbie’s keeping the run in to the end of the season very interesting to say the least.

However it was not all bad news as Radcliffe Junior Blues turned over Walshaw Park 3-0 to stop their recent surge and with Seedfield SC due to meet Radcliffe soon, makes for an interesting finish and an opportunity for Pennine to move forward, but who knows?

Match reports: Opponent: Bury Amateurs Jaguars Date: Saturday 11th April 11.00 k.o. Venue: Away Drinkwater Park Result: 2-4 Match report: From the onset it looked like an upset could be on the cards with the manager away and three influential players not available giving the Jaguars an opportunity to bear their teeth and avenge the early season drubbing they received. If the Jaguar players took time to look at the pre match kick about and looked at the number of shots that were going wide at the other end would have given them an indication that Pennine were there for the taking. Panthers got the first break away and showed their intent. With the wind to Pennines advantage Joey forwarded the ball from his area to Raza who shot wide. It was then that Pennine started to ball watch and with timid tackling and closing down gave us a clue to what would happen and Jaguars were one up as the forwards scythed through the nonexistent Pennine defence to make it 1-0. However Pennine galvanised and nearly equalised through shots from Sol and Raza. It was not long after that Sol had the ball in the net but the referee had blown for handball. Much to Sols chagrin he blasted the free kick in giving the goalkeeper no chance to make it 1-1. It was to and fro football with Pennine going wide with shots from Raza and Sol and some good protecting and intervening from Tyler Kneale and Haydn. Jaguars ominously moved forward on the break and it was only a great save from Joey after they had been awarded a free kick just outside the area that kept it 1-1 at half time. After half time there were some changes and it looked for a moment that Pennine would take the momentum but once again Jaguars went forward and just poked the ball over the line to make it 2-1. Ben Holyhead made a good attempt which was just wide and shortly after this with the wind at their backs Jaguars left the Pennine defence flatfooted to make it 3-1. Pennine responded with shots from Raza Joey and Tyler Parry but once again the Jags broke through and made it 4-1. Things were looking dodgy for Pennine as the Jags moved forward and looked like they would score as the Pennine defence was all at sea. Sol had other ideas and made it 4-2 and for a moment it looked like they would make a comeback but Jags had done their homework, and packed the defence and midfield to give Pennine no space to press and push. This defeat was always on the cards and if other teams play with a resolute three at the back and move the ball forward over our midfield they will catch us every time. This

combined with some great individual displays, grit and determination showed that Jaguars had at last clicked to win only their third game of the season and avenge that early defeat. Oddly enough it is the Grand National at the weekend and with Pennine looking like one of the favourites to canter the league with ‘Shut the front door’ at 7/1, but on this showing look more like ‘Court by Surprise’ at 40/1. So place your bets for an interesting few weeks. Mom Haydn Hickmann Parents Mom Tyler Kneale

Match reports: Opponent: Seedfield Sports Date: Thursday 24th April 6.30 k.o. Venue: Away Seedfield Sports Centre Result: 6-3 Match report: With things hotting up at the top of the table this was a crucial match for both teams and with perfect conditions on a hot spring evening the large crowd at the match would be in for a treat. From the onset Pennine set off on the front foot and Sol was quickly testing the keeper with a stinging shot which the keeper expertly saved. It was not going to be all one way as Harrison was called upon to make a save as Seedfield broke through. Just after this Santi broke through and once again the keeper was on his toes to make a great save. However the Santi Goal machine was up and running with some great moves and pushing from Sol made it 1-0. Pennine then dominated the play and it was total domination as Joey, Sol and Scott creating havoc in the Seedfield half and a goal bonanza looked on the cards as they all peppered the goal with near misses and lobs over the goal. It was not long before Sol scored the goal of the match with a magnificent shot that left the goalkeeper grasping into space to make it 2-0. The attack was playing methodically but credit must go to the defence and midfield with Foggy and Haydn playing purposefully and with further shots from Ben, Lucas and Scott it looked like more were on the cards. However it was a pinpoint header from Foggy that put the score at 3-0 just before half time. After the break Seedfield had more purpose and the pep talk from the manager enabled them to get one back after a neatly taken free kick 1-3. Pennine came back with near misses from Scott, Raza and a header from Joey. Seedfield eagerly took the next goal from a mistimed clearance in defence to make it 2-3 and it looked like Seedfield were making a game of it. With Pennine looking irked it was up to Scott to panic the defence and make it 2-4 with a neatly taken shot. Soon after he unselfishly crossed the ball to Joey who calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-5. Raza could have increased the lead but just went wide but it was the goal machine Scott who made it 2-6 with a fierce shot that confused the keeper. Ben tirelessly ran up the wing and nearly increased the lead but it was Seedfield who pulled one back 3-6 as Pennine pushed up the put the match to the sword.

Match reports: Opponent: Chadderton Park Dragons Date: Thursday 28th April 6.30 k.o. Venue: home Matthew Moss Result: 4-0 Match report: On a bitterly cold evening Pennine hosted dragons to attempt to get revenge for the 1-0 upset at their place. Pennine started brightly with Scott starting with a fine lob that nearly beat the keeper. Harrison was called upon to make a save as Dragons showed their intent but the Pennine attack pushed forward with shots and attempts from Rhys, Scott, Sol and a header from Foggy all went wide. A neat through ball allowed Joey to break through and slot it past the keeper to make it 1-0.Most of the first half was much of the same as Pennine could not make their domination count with some fine runs from Lucas and Sol and near misses from Joey, Scott and Raza, but saying that Dragons looked dangerous on the break and had their chances limited due to some fine work from Haydn in the midfield. The second half started with Pennine pushing forward and it was only a matter of time but before that there was some good tracking from Haydn and Joey who blocked two sure fire attacks from Dragons as they looked likely to score.

Page 24: Ui2s white

Page | 24

As the game continued Pennine were not putting the chances away and for a while it looked like this inability would harm Pennine as dragons sensed that the breakaways could prove costly. As the game progressed it must be said that Pennines relentless pushing would come to something and after a barrage of runs, crosses and corners from Sol, Parry and Ben it was that man Scott to make it 2-0 with a good interception from Ben. Harrison was called on to make a couple of clearances to keep the score sheet clean and shortly after it was up to Raza to execute a super shot to make it 3-0 and game over. Pennine continued with the pressure and Tyler Parry ended the game with an expert corner that confused the Dragons goalkeeper by curling in the nearside to make it 4-0. To give credit Dragons never gave up and the scoreline flatters Pennine but nonetheless it is three more points to the eagerly awaited finale. M.o.M Joey Oldham Parents M.o.M Raza Hassain

Match reports: Opponent: AFC Dobbies Date: Saturday 2nd May 10.00 k.o. Venue: Away Ainsworth Bury Result: 5-1 Match report: On a cold blustery morning Pennine prepared to meet AFC Dobbies in a must win match for the hosts if they were going to keep up with the chasing promotion pack. The pitch had a slight incline and would be a test for Pennines passing skills. From the onset Pennine moved forward and with some nice play between Scott and Joey gave us a taste of what was to come. Dobbies nearly caught Pennine flat footed and nearly took the lead but with some poor finishing put it wide of the mark. Raza was having a good start to the game and was given a lot of space by the defenders which he used effectively and nearly took the lead with a shot just wide. The Pennine midfield was dominating the spaces and with some neat interplay from Tyler and Joey allowed Scott to make it 1-0 with a neat shot. Joey and Raza were making some fine runs down the channels and causing all sorts of problems for the home defence and after a few misses from Scott, Joey and Raza it was not long before Joey slotted one home from a fine assist from Scott to make it 2-0. There was some fine defending at the back from Lucas, Tyler K and Haydn all soaking up the front running Dobbie forwards movements. Dobbies had a few breaks but untidy finishing would be a theme for them throughout the game. The goal of the game came just before half time with a fine cross from Ben to Tyler P who moved it across to Scott who took two delightful touches to slam it past the keeper 3-0. After the break Dobbies moved forward and looked slightly sharper but with Joey delivering fine crosses from the right wing and Ben running directly at the defence this

Page 25: Ui2s white

Page | 25

allowed Scott to plunder his third after a mix up in the defence with a coolly taken attempt 4-0. Pennine should have made more of the poor goal kicks from Dobbies and it was more the surprise of getting such clear cut chances that ensured the forwards would fluff their final touches. Joey was getting the best of the wing play and from one of his pitch perfect crosses from a corner gave Foggy the opportunity to head in delightfully taken header to make it 5-0. Dobbies woke up and replied with two fine shots that just skimmed the bar and managed to hit a post as they moved forward. Harrison was called on to make a fine save to keep a clean sheet but. Dobbies did manage to get one back as the attacker manfully pushed Lucas to one side and drifted past him, not something we have seen this season much to Lucas’s surprise 5-1. Pennine did not give up and Ben had the ball in the net but it was adjudged to be offside. This was an excellent win against Dobbies who have had a good run and were feeling that the second spot was within touching distance, but unfortunately underestimated the confidence of the Pennine squad and allowed them too much space on the wings and in midfield. Match reports: Opponent: Elton Sports Club Blues Date: Saturday 9th May 11.40 k.o. Venue: Away Close Park Bury Result: 12-0 Match report: We got the opportunity to look at our next opponents before the match as Walshaw Utd pitched themselves against the Jaguars and carved out a 2-0 win against a vastly improved Jaguars team. The start of the game was delayed as the referee prematurely went home so kick off was delayed by about 40 minutes which added to the Pennine nerves. From the onset Pennine were first off the blocks with Ben going close and Scott hitting the post, it was not all one way as the Blues went close with a shot over the bar. What followed was some fine defending from Foggy and Rhys followed with shots from Scott, Ben and Joey and it was looking to be a more difficult encounter than we had anticipated. Pennine got the break with a free kick from Lucas who powered it over the line with Scott making sure but it was clearly Lucas’s strike to make it 1-0. Harrison was called on to make two clearances as the Blues tried to make amends. Opportunities came as Joey, Raza, Scott and Sol tried chances but the ineffective goal kicks from the Blues would ultimately give Pennine the opportunity to strike which came from a back header which Sol struck home to make it 2-0. After half time it was all one way traffic as Pennine displayed their credentials and ran the Blues defence ragged with goals from a fantastic cross from Sol that looped into the goal 3-0. Scott using a good assist from Joey to make it 4-0. Joey carving through to make

it 5-0. Andy Holyhead going close, the Blues keeper saving from Scott; Joey running through again to make it 6-0; Tyler Parry going close and Raza thundering a shot that nearly broke the net 7-0. The pressure was relentless and Joey lobbed the keeper to make it 8-0 and just after this Scott hit the post twice, Raza slotted in after a great assist from Sol 9-0. This was followed by some confusion in the Blues defence as Sol moved forward to make the defender put it into his own goal 10-0. Ben Holyhead was rewarded for his efforts with a couple of bravely taken goals to make it 11-0 and 12-0. This game defined the season as Pennine worked relentlessly and did what they do well play simple football and punish opponents who give them space.
