What is Fatigue?
© 2011 ANSYS, Inc. October 12, 20116
Fatigue is the progressive and localized structural damage that occurs when a material is subjected to cyclic loading.
ANSYS® nCode DesignLife™What is fatigue?
© 2011 ANSYS, Inc. October 12, 20117
Fatigue is:
Failure under a repeated or otherwise varying load which never reaches a level sufficient to cause failure in a single application.
The nominal maximum stress values are less than the ultimate tensile stress limit, and may be below the yield stress limit of the material.
The initiation and growth of a crack, or growth from a pre‐existing defect, until it reaches a critical size.

Wheel– ANSYS calculates stresses for 18 static analyses as tire loads rotate
around the wheel.– DesignLife produces stresses histories at every node on the wheel model,
and predicts the number of revolutions of the wheel that will cause it to crack.
Wind Turbine– ANSYS calculates stresses for 6 separate load cases. ( force in the X,Y,& Z
directions, and moments about the X,Y,& Z directions on the hub of the wind turbine)
– DesignLife pairs the stresses from ANSYS with predicted load and moment histories for multiple wind conditions. The stress histories for the various wind conditions are assembled into a 20 year schedule, and a factor of safety for 20 years of operation is calculated at every location of the component.

Aircraft Control Valve– ANSYS calculates the frequency response of the valve due to
accelerations at its mounting location.– DesignLife uses that frequency response and calculates the hours of
operation prior to cracking when subjected to a swept sine acceleration test.
Turbocharger Housing– ANSYS calculates the stress history due to a 30 minute thermal cycle, and
the stresses due to a 40 Hz mechanical excitation.– DesignLife superimposes the thermal and mechanical stresses into a
720,000 point time history and calculates the turbocharger housing’s life in hours of operation.

ANSYS® nCode DesignLife™ANSYS nCode DesignLife Standard
Standard Package includes:
Description Applications
Stress-Life Enables fatigue life calculations to be made using the stress-life approach. Includes the ability to interpolate between material curves depending on the temperature. Python scripting can also be used to add new or proprietary SN methods.
High-cycle fatigue (long lives) where nominal stress controls the fatigue life.
Strain-Life Enables fatigue life predictions to be made using the local strain approach. Includes the ability to interpolate between material curves depending on the temperature at each location.
Wide range of problems including low-cycle fatigue with the local elastic-plastic strain controls the fatigue life.
Dang Van analyzers
Enables Dang Van safety factor calculations. The Dang Van criterion is a method of predicting the endurance limit under complex loading situations. The output from the analysis is always expressed as a safety factor not a fatigue life. Specific material parameters are calculated from tensile and torsion tests.
Engine and powertrain-type applications where there are very large numbers of loading cycles.

FAQs!
© 2011 ANSYS, Inc. October 12, 201122
ANSYS® nCode DesignLife™FAQs!
Q. What is the difference between ANSYS nCode DesignLife Standard and nCode’s standalone product?
A. The ANSYS product is integrated within the Workbench 2.0 framework, otherwise, they are identical. (Prior to the 12.1 release, the ANSYS version could only read ANSYS files, but now it can read all FE codes that the nCode version supports.)

ANSYS® nCode DesignLife™FAQs!
Q. Where will customers get their fatigue properties?
A. ANSYS nCode DesignLife contains the complete nCode DesignLifeMaterial Library integrated into Engineering Data.
Additionally, nCode has a materials testing service that customers may wish to use for unique materials or conditions.

ANSYS® nCode DesignLife™FAQs!
Q. What is the difference between ANSYS nCode DesignLife and the ANSYS Fatigue module?
A. The ANSYS Fatigue module is very limited in what it can do. No critical plane capability and therefore no non‐proportional non‐constant amplitude loading. Loading is limited to a single time history or a specific 2 load case option. ANSYS Fatigue cannot analyze multiple events (It has no “duty cycle” capabilities). Also, it does not support vibration, spot‐weld, or seam‐weld…

ANSYS® nCode DesignLife™FAQs!
Q. Are there any Fatigue capabilities that ANSYS customers use that are not available in nCode DesignLife or its modules?
A. Currently, ANSYS nCode DesignLife does not perform the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel fatigue calculations as specified by this code. This will be in the R14 release.Notably:• Through thickness integration of stresses• Linearize stresses to determine equivalent membrane and bendingstresses• Consistent method of stress recovery for solid models
