    PAPERII

Note : This paper contains fifty (50) multiple-choice questions, each question carryingtwo (2) marks. Attempt all of them.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow, based onthe passage you understand :

Indias underdevelopment was not traditional or inherited from the precolonialpast. India of the eighteenth century was undeveloped and not underdeveloped. On aworld scale, it was not less but perhaps more developed than many other nationaleconomies, as most of the world development has occurred after the eighteenth centuryand basically after 1850. In fact, there was not much of a gap between the economic

condition of Mughal India and that of pre-industrial Europe and Japan. The basicfeature of colonialism in India in its long history since the 1750s was the appropriationby Britain of the social surplus produced in India. Also while the forms of surplusappropriation underwent changes through different stages of colonialism directappropriation of surplus, employment of our boys, unequal exchange, profits of industrialcapitalism and interest on public debt - the fact of surplus appropriation remainedconstant and basic. There were of course, many changes and some of them were positivefor example, the development of the railways - when seen in isolation. But these changescame within and as part of the colonial framework and became, therefore, part of theprocess of underdevelopment. Colonialism is best seen as a totality or a unified structure. The newly developed institutions and evolving structures formed an interconnected

and mutually reinforcing network, which survived and brought into being the colonialstructure.

    1. Why was Indias underdevelopment not traditional ?

    (A) India in the 18th century was undeveloped

    (B) India did not inherit underdevelopment from the past

    (C) India in the 18th century was not underdeveloped(D) India was not a poor nation

    2. Why eighteenth century India could not be called underdeveloped ?

    (A) World development occured after 18th century(B) India did not lag behind other nations

    (C) Most other nations developed after 1850

    (D) Indian economy was comparable with contemporary Europe and Japan

    3. Which of the following is the basic feature of colonialism ?

    (A) unequal exchange

    (B) appropriation of social surplus

    (C) interest on public debt
