Garden Club Anne Holway

We were all saddened by the recent death of Joan Gillard who had been

a long standing committee member and hosted our meetings for many years.

We are hoping for a sunny day when we visit the gardens at Ugborough House by

kind invitation of Emily and Matt on Saturday 8th April at 3 p.m.

Our Annual Flower and Produce Show is booked for Saturday 9th September so

please make a note in your diaries.

Coffee Drop-In Centre

(tel. 07882286421, or 01752 894348.)

We are all looking forward to those first signs of Spring at

The Brook, particularly that first flush of grass……

A huge thank you to Sian Holway and to the staff of The

Anchor, for organising and hosting another successful fund

raiser in the guise of a Curry Evening, which raised a fantastic £535 for funds.

Thanks also to all those who donated raffle prizes. We are privileged to have such

dedicated supporters.

Don’t forget keep looking out for anyone who might be able help us out in any of

the many jobs that are necessary to run our successful group.

Ugborough Bell Fund –Juliet Collis

The Bellringers would like to thank everyone who came and supported the Big

Breakfast in the Village Hall on Saturday 11th March. A total of 220 breakfasts

were served and we raised a magnificent total of £1,612 on the day with some Gift

Aid as well. We would also like to thank the breakfast sponsors who provided

delicious local produce including Aune Valley Meat, Ludbrook Butchers, Moby Nicks,

Co-op South Brent, Waterman and Dunwell Farms. A special mention goes to Nick

Henry for his long stint at the sink, to Katie Smart for making the drinks, to Steve

Lloyd for manning the toasters and to Liz Slater who took charge of the hoover

for the clear up, just as the ringers were all flagging.

We have been notified this month of two successful grant applications for a total

of £1,100, which combined with the Big Breakfast funds now brings our appeal

total to £49,000 which is 70% of the target. Onwards and upwards!

The children have relished this month’s focus on literacy and language. World Book

Day saw the children dress up as characters from some of their favourite stories

(which ranged from The Cat in the Hat to Snow White!) Also the children joined

forces with Key Stage 1 to attend Room on the Broom at the Theatre Royal

Plymouth. This musical version of the well-known Julia Donaldson’s book captivated

the children. Our annual book sale (of preloved books for all ages) completed the

week, which along with hamper raffle, raised nearly £150.

Our ‘Race Night’ fundraiser was also a big success. Held on the cusp of Mothering

Sunday, the ‘Ladies’ Day’ themed event, saw lots of wining, dining and equine-ing!

Thank you to all involved for support of, and your contribution to, these events, as

well as all involved in the much acclaimed Panto, in February.

As a charity we rely on these events to sustain the quality experiences that

preschool can provide for the children and we are very grateful for your support.

With that in mind, a date for your diaries is that of our annual summer shindig and

fundraiser: Ugfest 2017 – Saturday 17th June.

Having celebrated Shrove Tuesday with pancakes and St David’s Day by making

Welsh cakes the children are of course now looking forward to Easter and all that

it brings! The last week of our spring term will see our Annual Egg Hunt in the

grounds of Ugborough House (thanks again to Matt and Emily) which the children

always enjoy!

Ugborough Local History Group- Merryl Docker

There has been a change to our programme this month. To welcome the

spring/summer season we are having a talk on 'Piers of the South West' by

Tim Phillips. Join us as we wallow in nostalgia of our childhood love for the

excitement of our seaside piers. See you on Wednesday 26th April at 8 p.m. in

Ugborough village hall. Non members very welcome at just £2 on the door.

dates in the future will be arranged to suit those who cannot attend on this

occasion.

Beryl’s Bookworms – Sue Johns

The Gustav Sonata by Rose Tremain.

Tremain, a favourite author of ours, didn’t disappoint in this tale

of a lifelong friendship between Gustav and Anton, set in

Switzerland during and after WW2. The abject unhappiness of Gustav throughout

his childhood, with the poverty, loss of father and unloving mother, contrasted

sharply with the precocious musically talented Anton of wealthy, loving Jewish

parents. The very different life journeys the friends embarked on was the

essence of the tale – and in particular the circumstances and characters that

dictated their fortunes. Gustav’s ‘stiff upper lip’ attitude to whatever life threw

at him was at odds with Anton’s lifelong disappointment in his inability to overcome

his debilitating nerves in the concert hall.

We all agreed that Tremain’s sensitivity and perceptive description of every

character allowed us to be transported to a Switzerland struggling to remain

neutral in a war torn Europe. This is a bleak novel and inspires pity for its

characters, we concurred, but it was compulsive reading and certainly entertaining.

The sonata inference clearly links the musical equivalent, several sections all

related, yet each with their own unique character.

To the delight of some members this book had a beginning, middle and end - almost

chronologically!

We were not all waxing lyrical, however – and there were a couple of dissenters to

buck the trend – and to those, the ending in particular, felt somewhat contrived

and ‘twee’…

Despite this, our average score was 4.3 out of 5 – with three members moved to

award the perfect 5.

Next Month: The Rosie Project by Graham Simsion.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Gym and Dance show at Ivybridge

Community College. It was so lovely to be part of Red Nose Day for Comic Relief on

24th March when the children made a donation to wear mufti. So many smiling red

noses and faces - well done!

Safari Supper -

Thank you to everyone who supported the PTA 2017 Safari Supper We raised an

amazing £740 which will be shared with Pre-school, Breakfast Club and After

School Club and Messy Church.

Beacon Federation Governors- Sue Roberts (Chair of Governors)

Are you looking for a stimulating and worthwhile challenge?

Do you want to make a difference for the next generation?

Do you have experience in business, education, law or child development?

Are you active in the local community or a successful fund raiser?

Are you good at working with people and getting things done?

If any of these apply to you why not consider becoming a school governor – the

most important voluntary role in Education today? Your skills could be just what

we need!

You do not need any previous experience - there is plenty of training available.

We meet monthly, serve for a 4-year term and are a mix of parents, members of

staff and people from the wider community. You do need to be able to visit the

schools during the day from time to time. All governors also need a satisfactory

enhanced DBS disclosure.

From time to time we have vacancies on the Governing Board and anyone who

shares our commitment to achieving the best for the children at Ermington and

Ugborough is welcome to apply. You can see more about what we do on the

Beacon Federation website www.beaconfederation.com.

If you think you might like to find out more about becoming a governor please

contact the school office at Ermington (01548 830459) or Ugborough (01752

892489) or email [email protected] . We’d love to hear from you!

Ugborough Sustainable Saturdays –Sarah Scanlon

Thank you so much to all the Producers, Shoppers and Coffee drinkers who

attended USS this month. It has been a bumper time and we are really delighted

to see so many people turning out on a Saturday morning to get together and

socialise in the Village Hall. We are really lucky to be living in a community that

cares and shares so much (Brilliant Big Breakfast event!)

A few comments from some people at USS last week:

“I come for my fortnightly indulgence”.

“When I pop into USS for a Coffee and a sit down, I see lots of people that I don’t

usually see during the week, it is lovely”.

“I would miss it if Ugborough was without USS now. I shop, I relax and I feel I can

face the week ahead of me”.

"I love coming to USS and being a producer. It is so lovely to see regulars and they

are pleased to buy my products. It is a win-win situation”.

“It is great to see all the young families getting together over a drink and see

them growing up”.

And finally , “ Wow, it is so busy in here. I saw the banner as I was cycling past and

had to come in to see what was going on. I will be back!!”

Clerk: Sarah Woodman Tel: 01364 661127 Email: [email protected]

Website: ugboroughparishcouncil.org

The public session of the March Parish Council Meeting concentrated (separately)

on travellers and budgets. The Hillhead ‘Travellers’ attended the meeting to query

the DCC protocol (conditions of occupation), to refute abuse allegations and to

confirm that SHDC was not currently taking enforcement action against them – so

progress has definitely stalled.

The budgets reflect increasing need for services, coupled with a reduction in

central Government support. DCC will be increasing its precept by 4.99%, with

most of that increase going to Child and Adult Services. The SHDC budget would

result in a £5 increase in Band D Council Tax, with no reduction in front line

services.

Planning applications - Parish Council recommendations are given in bold below:

Retrospective change of use of existing building to a mixed use of

agriculture and equestrian at Land adj 3 Leigh Close, Bittaford Ref

as their new website has come online.

Parish Council assets will receive a facelift Councillors Holway and Beable will

tidy up the burial ground shed; Bittaford bus shelter will be weatherproofed; and

the Parish Council will arrange for the conduit to be redecorated.

Highway matters, as usual, formed the focus for discussion. Following on from

the February meeting, DCC Highways had responded that: The blocked drain

outside Moorlands, Wrangaton would not be easy to fix as it lay on private land and

would necessitate closing access to the golf club; No funding was available for a

pedestrian refuge on the road by Wrangaton bus stop, although it could be funded

as part of any future development; Car parking outside the former Wrangaton Post

Office was reducing visibility, but the solution of double yellow lines as far as

Bewley Garage would be unpopular with residents; and a long term solution was

being sought for rubble on the lanes at Ludbrook – obstructions to the highway

should be reported at https://new.devon.gov.uk/roadsandtransport/report-a-

problem

The shared mobile flashing speed sign for Ugborough, Ermington and Yealmpton

has received the go-ahead, thanks to Locality funding from Devon CC. Each Parish

will use the sign for a two month period.

Bittaford phone box has now been decommissioned and will be available to

Bittaford for a community library. If you would like to help with the conversion,

please contact the Clerk.

The Annual Parish Meeting is on Wednesday 19th April from 7.30 p.m. at

Ugborough Village Hall, and will focus on the Community First Responder service.

Ugborough’s Open Space Strategy will be presented – and this is an opportunity

for you to find out what’s going on in your Parish and get involved in local issues.

Come along!

National Grid is carrying out an overhead power line refurbishment scheme, which

will result in a number of road closures from May to June. For more details, have a

look at http://www2.nationalgrid.com/uk/in-your-area/projects/landulph-to-

exeter/

The Joint Local Plan consultation is running until 26th April. The Plan will provide

the overarching strategy for the area, setting out where development will take

place, what areas should be protected, and how the area will change through to

2034. Unfortunately, too little notice was given for the March consultation

events, but you can view the Plan and submit comments by going to

http://plymouth.objective.co.uk/portal/planning/jlp/

The next Parish Council Meetings will be held a week later than normal, on

Wednesday 12th April, starting at 7.30 p.m. Agenda and minutes will be displayed

on the noticeboards and website.

St. Peter’s Church, Ugborough

From our Priest in Charge- Rev’d David Sayle

The Easter season is a time when Christians rejoice in the knowledge that their

risen Lord has overcome death and in so doing brought HOPE to the world. But for

others, Easter is simply a holiday period and a time for giving chocolate eggs and

hopefully enjoying the beginning of Spring.

In the days following Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (which we celebrate on Palm

Sunday), he is at his most vulnerable. In his humanity Jesus must have felt those

tensions and the vulnerability that looking ahead can bring.

Our modern day life is full of so many different tensions within families, work life

and the events of Holy Week and Easter offer a message of hope. The tensions are

no less real but the truth is that there is always hope.

Changes in life and the loss of securities, that from time to time we all experience,

can be traumatic but they can also be a time to discover that all is not lost. The

Easter message is that, even after death, there is resurrection. Jesus had to face

terrible suffering to enter into a new life. He had to lose his own life and be

resurrected on the third day in order to bring life and hope to all creation.

The Easter message resonates down the centuries and can bring a special meaning

to all those who are feeling at their most vulnerable in difficult times. This hope is

the truth of the resurrection and it is one that we are all called to share.

So however you celebrate Easter may you have a Happy, Joyful and Hope filled

time,

David

Thy Kingdom Come

The Archbishop of Canterbury has launched an international prayer campaign,

‘Thy Kingdom Come’, which runs between Ascension and Pentecost (25th May –

4th June), and seeks to build upon the success it enjoyed last year.

It's encouraging everything from worship nights to prayer walks and overnight

prayer vigils. In a video, which can be viewed at www.thykingdom.co.uk, the

Archbishop said: "Following Jesus has been the core point of my life and that's one

reason I want everyone to hear His voice calling to them, and to learn what it is to

find His love, His call, His direction, His purpose."

The Three Rivers Mission Community will once again be joining this initiative, so

please look out for further information in future Newsletters. In the meantime,

please do take a look at the website and why not join the Pledge2Pray?
