Uganda Update Mukono. The company constructed an ISSB latrine together with an attached washroom and store room for a private contractor. Buikwe. In association with Caritas of the Czech Republic through Uganda Czech Development Trust (UCDT) the company constructed a 20,000L SSB water tank at St. Kizito Masinde-Magimu (Community) Primary School in Kigaya Village, Najja Sub-County, Buikwe District, Central Uganda. Key Benefits of using SSB to construct water tanks: Rainwater harvesting and the use of compressed earth construction technology offer environmentally friendly and low-cost solutions to water supply in disadvantaged communities. 40-50% Cheaper than alternatives such as plastic and galvanized steel tanks when completely installed (compare overall cost including guttering of UGX 7.5million with 14-15million for same size plastic tank). Significant use of local materials and manpower enhances community livelihoods. Improved hygiene and health situation in schools. Tanks known to be more durable and less susceptible to vandalism.

Uganda Update

Mukono.

Key Benefits of using SSB to construct water tanks:

• Rainwater harvesting and the use of compressed earth construction technology offer environmentally friendly and low-cost solutions to water supply in disadvantaged communities.

• 40-50% Cheaper than alternatives such as plastic and galvanized steel tanks when completely installed (compare overall cost including guttering of UGX 7.5million with 14-15million for same size plastic tank).

• Significant use of local materials and manpower enhances community livelihoods. • Improved hygiene and health situation in schools. • Tanks known to be more durable and less susceptible to vandalism.

Phumla. West of Kampala the company has been heavily involved in the construction of a church in a private retreat. The building was designed by Dan Andabati, who was also responsible for the training of blockmakers and project management and quality assurance during the building phase. ISSBs were not suitable for this project and it is constructed from Compressed Earth Blocks which are equally eco-friendly. The resultant building is aesthetically pleasing and exudes peacefulness and serenity.

Katuuso. The company was approached to manage the construction of an infants/primary school at Katuuso, funded by the United Future Foundation in Australia. Good Earth Technologies (Uganda) was responsible for the design of the buildings, together with the training of blockmakers and masons and overall project management for phase 1 which involved the construction of one classroom block and a toilet block. Phase 2 which consists of a second classroom block was built to an equally high standard as phase 1 by the blockmakers and masons trained by us but without any direct involvement. All the buildings are constructed with ISSBs.The Headmistress and the teachers are completely delighted with their new buildings.
