Support people with HIVCare and support for peopleliving with HIV is reflectedin one of the scoutingprinciples: duty to others.Scout law 3 and 5 encouragesscouts to be helpful andrespectful. Have you been
supportive to people living withHIV? In what way?
Through discussions, skits and role-plays, SV journalists said, peopleliving with HIV need love and care to beable to live positively with HIV andAIDS. Living positively meansaccepting your situation and takingcare of yourself to avoid re-infection.
Scouts said care andsupport involves: Talking and playing with them Being friends with them Donating extra items such as clothes
to those who are needy Helping them with work at home and
school Reminding those infected to take
their medicine Not discriminating them Not calling them names Giving them morale that they still
have a life Telling them to avoid drugs and
practice abstinence Offer them opportunities such as
being leaders at school Raise awareness to other people on
how they should be treated
Avoid stigmatizinglanguageStigma refers to saying or doing things
that make people feel bad. Somewords or phrases you use maystigmatise people living with HIV. Avoidsome of words when referring to them: HIV victim Casualty He/she looks positive

MY POINT IS...Scouts Voice journalists debate on what to present during group work. This was during the Editorial workshop at Rowallan Scout Camp in Nairobi.
Uyu ni carrier Hatari Red wire
Two years ago I had fears about peoplewho are HIV positive. But now I havegot enough knowledge. I know HIV isnot transmitted by sitting near someonewith HIV, eating with them or beingwith them in the same class. Now I willtreat them as brothers and sisters. I will
also create awareness among otherpeople so that they can avoid HIV. Weshould help AIDS orphans with things
like clothes and school fees. We need tohelp these people because any of us canbe infected. If it is not you, and it notyour parents, it may be your relative, friend or neighbour.Mary Wanjiku,Class 8, 13, Maragi Pri. Sch,

I used to fear people with HIV but now Idont. Even if I had someone with HIVin our class, I would not isolate her. I
will care for them because they needlove just like us.Naomi Wanjiku,12, Class 7, Myandarua Boarding
