Forthenextyear,thisapproximate12-by-15spaceiswhatUniversityfreshmenwillcallhome,andwhenapproachingthetaskofdecoratingit,theprocesscanbedaunting.
Althoughtheoutcomewasasuccess,LeahTeach,afreshmanpre-businessmajorfromMarietta,saidstartingwasthehardestpart.
“Itwashardtofindcutestufftofitthebedsandfigureoutwhatkindofroomwewanted,”shesaid,“butoncewehaditallpickedout,itwaseasytofindthelittleac-cessoriestogowithit.”
TeachlivesinRussellandsaiddecorat-ingherdormroomwasimportantformakingthespace“homier.”
“Everythingiswoodormetal,sodeco-ratingitreallyhelped,”shesaid.

Thebesttimestothriftforfurnitureareduringthesummerwhenleasesend,aswellasaftereachsemesterconcludes.It’sbestnottowaituntilthefirstweekofclasstolook,asdemandisrelativelyhigh.

“It’scrowded,butit’safuntime,”saidBrentBall,ahistorymajorfromFreeHomewhohasattendedover20gameswhileattendingtheUniversity.“Justmakesureyouknowwhatyou’redoing.”
Likeanyschoolwithabig-ticketfootballteam,gamedayfestivitiesbeginoutsidethestadium,oftenhoursbeforekickoff.Thatgivesfansplentyofactivitiestodo–andplentyofthingsnottodo–beforeheadingintoSanfordStadiumalongsidethe92,000-plusvisitors.

Yes, spin those wheelsAthens is a biking town, go ahead and join the revolution
Tired of waiting on the bus? Wish you could add a little more excite-
ment to your trips to and from class? Whether walking on the street, or riding
the bus, you have probably seen people fly by on their way to class.
Biking in Athens is an alternative mode of transportation, but it is quite popular amongst students. There are many benefits that riding your own bike has as opposed to walking or riding the bus.
“Riding my bike helps me get to class much quicker along with the benefit of exer-cise,” freshman Robert Seibold said.
Along with expediency, and health ben-efits there are additional benefits as well.
Paul Quick recently spoke to many first year students about Biking Safely in Athens and believes biking in Athens is the best way to commute around the city for stu-dents.
“I see biking in Athens as very economi-cal for students, especially those who do not have a car,” Quick said. “This city is a very compact college town and has made it part of their infrastructure, allowing cycling to become quite popular here. With a Uni-versity whose culture often promotes ben-efitting the environment, it is no surprise that Athens has become a biking town.”
In addition to the main roads like Lump-kin, Baxter, Milledge, and Broad, there are a few off road areas like Dudley Park and Athens - River Green for those who want to bike and not worry about the hustle and bustle that is Athens traffic.

Programs such as the Bike Recycling Program give access to those unreached by other forms of public transportation an op-portunity to ride a bike as a new way to get to and from work or school.
There are a few safety risks when bik-ing amongst cars and buses. Some sugges-tions by direct.gov are to wear a helmet, always signal your intentions, and equip your bike with reflec-tors when necessary.

Accordingto“AWalkingTouroftheUniversityofGeorgia”byProfessorEmeritusofHistoryNashBoney,LumpkinHousewasbuiltin1844byWilsonLumpkin.
AsGeorgia’sgovernorfrom1831to1835,LumpkinwasappointedbyPresidentAndrewJacksontooverseetheremovalofCherokeesbywayoftheTrailofTears.Lumpkin’spoliticalcareeralsoincludedstintsasaU.S.SenatorandU.S.Congressman.Heretiredfrompoliticsin1841,andrecruitedIrishstonemasonEd-wardLillytobuildanewhomeonhislandinAthens.LillybuilttheLumpkinHouseoutofClarkeCounty’snaturalbedrock,knownasAthensGneiss.
In1907,theLumpkinHouse—andwithitthe736acresthatbecameSouthCam-pus—wasdeededtotheUniversitywithonestipulation.Ifthehousewasdestroyedormovedfromitsoriginallocation,thatacreagewouldonceagainbeownedbyLumpkin’sdescendants.
Thus,oddasitmaylookcomparedtothebrickfacadesofthechemistryandbiologybuildingsacrossthestreet,theLumpkinHouseisnotgoinganywhereanytimesoon.
Thomas-Carithers HouseTheThomas-CarithersHouse,locatedat
thecornerofSouthMilledgeandBaxter,hasquiteastorytotell.
AccordingtotheCarlVinsonInstituteofGovernment’swebsite,thehousewasbuiltin1896byAthensarchitectWilliamWin-steadThomas.Thearchitecturalstyleisthereasonstudentsmayhearthebuildingreferredtoasthe“WeddingCake”house.
ItisnowthehomeofsistersintheAl-phaGammaDeltasorority,whohavelivedtheresince1939whenthepropertywasboughtfromCarithers’widow.Thesoror-ityhasrenovatedit,addinganelementtothestoryoftheWeddingCakeHouse.

Every year for the past decade, Athens has been voted a top 25 art destination by AmericanStyle magazine — and for good reason.
The Georgia Museum of Art has come a long way since its days in a University library basement, and has since become the official state museum of art.
Newly renovated, the museum now boasts a sculpture garden, permanent and temporary galleries featuring world-renowned artists, a gift shop, library and study rooms.
Some recognizable artist names that visitors can expect to see include Georgia O’Keeffe, Winslow Homer and Andy War-hol.
“There’s close to 500 [works] in our permanent collection galleries,” said Jenny Williams, director of public relations. “And there’s anywhere from eight to ten other spaces that are filled with temporary exhibi-tions, so close to 1,000 works.”
Across from the museum is the new La-mar Dodd School of Art visual arts building, which features two contemporary galleries, project spaces and art-covered hallways.
The galleries feature sculptures, paint-ings, textiles, jewelry, photography and more from international, national and local artists.

Another gallery worth visiting is the Athens In-stitute for Contemporary Art, which receives about 800 visitors per each two-month run.
The repurposed 2,200 square foot warehouse displays artwork by lo-cal and national artists ATHICA also hosts events such as readings, film screenings, kids crafts, music and dance.
ATHICA’s website ad-vertises the gallery as an “alternative” art gallery “dedicated to exhibiting challenging, provocative and innovative contem-porary art in a non-com-mercial setting.”
Another engaging gal-lery experience that has recently emerged in Ath-ens is the studio meets lounge concept.
Local businesses AR-Tini’s, Pints and Paints and Sips n Strokes have combined two of the biggest trends in town: alcohol and art.
Patrons can admire paintings on display by local artists while painting their own masterpiece; and all art supplies are included in the cost.

Althoughtheridetocampusmightseemmorecrowded,therearemorebusesontheroad,ac-cordingtothemanageroftheUni-versity’sCampusTransitSystem.
RonHamlin,theCampusTransitManager,saidthatheaddedtwonewbusesand40newdrivers.Theadditionwasaimedataccom-modatingtherecordhighnumberofstudents,accordingtoHamlin.
CampusTransitemploys120studentsand20full-timedriversnowcomparedto80studentsand20full-timedriverslastyear.
Thebusesmightfeelbusierbe-causeofthelargefreshmanclass,accord-ingtoastudentbusdriver.
ItaliaTran,achemistrymajorfromLawrencevillewhohasdrivenbusessinceFebruary2011,saidcampustransithas,ingeneral,addedmorebusestotheOrbitandMilledgeAvenueroutes.
“Therewasashortageofdriversinthesummerandthespringtoo.”Transaid.“Ibelievewe’veaddedmorebusestoeach
route.”Transaidthatdespitethebusierbuses,
thelengthofhisshiftshasn’tchanged—theyhavejustgottenmorechaotic.Hesaidhehopesthatpeoplewillunderstandthatbusdriversaredoingeverythingtheycantomovestudentsbetweenclassesef-ficiently.“Peopleshouldbemorepatient.”Transaid.“Peoplewantthebusdriverstohurryupbutwereallycan’tbecausewehavetostayonschedule.”

Studentsparkedintheselotswillberequiredtomovetheirvehiclebefore5:15p.m.ontheFridaybeforeahomefootballgame.Anyvehiclefoundinthelotat5a.m.ongamedaywillbetowed.
Freeparkingongamedaywillbeavail-ableforstudentsintheparkingdecks,excludingtheHullStreetandTatedecks.
ThenewIntramuralFieldparkingdeckwillalsoofferfreeparkingongamedays.
TheEastdeck,whichwasformerlyforpermitholdersonly,hasbecomeapaylotwiththesamestandardratesastheTatedeck.

Theendgoal?Deliveringprogrammingoutsideofthemainstreamoffilms.TheideabehindCinéistopromote“adult”movie-going,focusedmoreontheexperi-enceofwatchingwell-mademoviesandpromptingdiscussion.Thetheaterisade-cidedalternativetothetwomegaplexstylemovietheaters,whosebusinessmodellendsitselftothebox-officecycle.
Nowfiveyearsold,Cinéhasestablisheditselfasacommunityinstitution.
ItregularlyplayshosttoAthensgroups’eventsinitslabspace,liketheWUOGProminApril,doesartopeningsandmaintainsworksinitsmainlobbyandpremieresanassortmentofeducationalandcommunityfilmfestivals.
SinceJanuary,thecinémahasalreadyhostedanoirfilmseries,EcoFocusFilmFestivalandaFrenchfilmseries,inaddi-tiontoitsregularscheduleofprogram-ming.Cinéoftenbringsinspeakerstoprovideinformationonafilm’scontentorcontext.
Cinéhasalsomadeitselfapartofafilmpreservationeffort,andtothebestofitsabilitiesbringsinprintsof35mmfilmwherepossible.
