PresidentOliver “Knowledge” KinzonziMy name is Oliver Kinzonzi, I am standing for the position of yourpresident. I study economics with politics. I am very passionateabout my subject because of its relevance to the way that societyfunctions. I believe it has helped me develop skills in which alongwith my experience of being engaged in the unions activities willequip me for this role. Things have been quiet this past year andthere is a sense of disappointment with the SU. My plans are tomake significant improvements and along with my commitment topromote the interest of the students, I propose to do so in thefollowing ways;

The employment of a well established Marketing Company, toconduct an intense field research venture to collect informationon the preferences of the students, so that I can ensure that the union’s resources aregeared towards meeting these needs. This guarantees that the students have a voice.

I want to stand up for students that feel that their lectures on their programme are markingtheir essays in a harsh manner. Also to support students on applications for extenuatingcircumstances and irrational capping of grades.

Too many students are going straight home after their lectures. It is my intentions allocateas much of the Unions resources in facilitating the networking process, in which studentscan meet one another and share interest through strengthening clubs and societies, anddelivering a comprehensive entertainment package.

I propose to increase our affiliation with other Universities so that when we have our ballsthey are on a much bigger scale.

Rather than out sourcing specialist job to external individuals I want to look at thepossibility of creating more jobs for students.

I also support student car parking.

Any Questions on delivering these policies contact me; kinzonzi@gmail

VP Race and Diversity OfficerQuincy OkpokporMy name is Quincy Elo Okpopkor, I’m a final year student of theUniversity of East London and I’m very pleased to be in a diverseenvironment, if nominated for the above role and these are my ideaswhilst in post,

I will liaise with the different society within this university to promotea social and diverse environment amongst students and staff.

We are all members of different groups and we need to understandthe consequences on how we treat each others. Under the school ofsocial science, I’ve learnt about the importance of race across avariety of contexts.

If elected, I will aim to improve the quality of goals and interest ofthe student while abiding to the constitutional code of conduct of the Union.

I will ensure that there will be tolerance for us, the students of all ethnic backgrounds and willpromote social activities involving ethnic groups in their union.

To ensure that all work abides to the Uelsu constitution and equal opportunity policy.University life can be wary at times; I will aim to improve the quality of experience amongstsocial groups by creating educative social events such debates or quiz games, film nights andmore. As an officer of the union, there will be review on the parking made available for students whichcan be negotiable between students and this university.

Also as an officer of the union, there will be a review for matters of extenuating circumstancesand appeal against decisions.

Finally, quality is the reason for experience; hence I will aim to improve unity, equality anddiversity for us- the students which make up the bodies and voices of this university so pleaselet’s sing with one voice.

Thanks

VP Academic & Welfare OfficerAndy PattonIf elected, in my role as Academic and Welfare Officer for theStudent’s Union, I will endeavour to represent all students at UELto the best of my ability. My main aim will be to devote as muchtime as possible to helping students with concerns about theireducation and general welfare.

Studying at university and coping with the pressure to succeed canoften be very stressful, and I hope to become a well known figurewho students can contact for help and advice, whether by phone,e-mail or in person.

Aside from the duties of the position, as a sabbatical officer I willstrive to create transparency within the Union so that studentsknow exactly what is going on and when. I wish to publicisemeetings and events on both grassroots and electronic levels, ensuring that the amount of students informed of such events is maximised.

In the past I have been a keen volunteer, not just at UEL but in the wider community, and forthis reason I believe I have the experience and motivation required to successfully organise, and carry out, awareness campaigns and events specific to my role.

I’ve been a student at UEL for the past three years and have experienced the bad as well asthe good. My reason for wanting to stay on for another year, as a sabbatical officer, is that I feelI can really make a positive difference to the education of my peers. I’m not running for thisposition because I want a good C. V, or to get the odd pat on the back, but because I careabout the way that the university is run and the students who study here.

I’m not promising miracles, but I do promise to listen.

VP Communications OfficerJoseph CesareWe all know how easy it is to fall into the same old counter-productive habit of simply doing the bare minimum of what isexpected. Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be much reason to gothe extra mile. I know it’s hard work being a student, even withoutself-imposed extra work. But I’ve found that a lot is possible with alittle help from the people around you.

I hope many of you have seen the uYELLnews, the official unofficialUEL student publication, because this is what I have to show for myown self-imposed pursuits.

What started out as an idea in my head, turned into over 15students collaborating towards one common goal: to have theirvoices heard, every month, regardless of their course of study oracademic history. As Editor-in-Chief, I have provided effectiveleadership, choosing competent staff, arranging funding, and coordinating the publication anddistribution of our paper.

What I’ve found through all of this is that UEL has an unending supply of creativity andintelligence, but often lacks an accessible way for these resources to be fully utilised.

The media on campus needs help from its students!

If we don’t want to hear about the establishment’s successes but about our own, then we needto ‘yell’ about our own achievements loud enough for them to hear us. If we want to make theschool media fit us, then we not only must take the initiative to let our voices be heard, but electa Vice President of Communications who will listen.

If elected, I, Joseph Cesare, promise to provide the leadership necessary to create media thatwill act as vehicles for the voices of UEL students across all campuses and fields of study.

VP Communications OfficerJake SmithAnother Student Union is possible. Elect me as Vice PresidentCommunications Officer and I will fight for more representation ofstudents, a student union that fights for students rights. I will workto unite students and create an active student body. TheCommunications Officer should help represent the student voice, three years studying Journalism will help me in editing andproducing the student newspaper ReFuel.

Elected as Officer without Portfolio in the AGM of October 08 I havestrengthened and helped lead our campaigns, taking students andbanners to; Another Education is Possible demanding freeeducation and grants for all, National Climate March, Stop thesiege in Gaza (STW) demonstrations.

I’ve also represented UEL students at the Unite against Fascism(UAF) conference and will be building Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) events in the nearfuture as well as representing UEL students at National Union of Students (NUS) demandingfor more representation and less bureaucracy.

Within the University I’ve pushed campaigns raising awareness and activism on campus settingsocieties up such as Stop the War, Love Music Hate Racism and Fair Trade. I want to makesure these societies continue to grow, and continue to fight for a better union. Please let mededicate myself full time to you, the UEL students.

16

Students with Disabilities OfficerJack KavanaghAs Students with Disabilities Officer I will go to great lengths topromote understanding, acceptance and accommodation ofDisabled Students on Campus and in Halls. I will work hard to bringgreater attention to the issues faced by disabled students in auniversity environment and to pressure the management to betteraccommodate their needs. I will also work to make the Union morerepresentative on a general level and will make all effort torepresent any student, disabled or not, who has needs the aid ofthe Students’ Union. I believe that the Union does not properlyrepresent its members, the student body, and lacks the respectamong students to have any significant power outside of that whichis granted by the university management. I believe that this state ofaffairs is in desperate need of change and that the only way it canbe changed is a concerted effort from both the Students’ UnionExecutives and the student body.

17

LGBT Officer Micheala Baily

I believe I would be the ideal candidate for this position because ofmy participation in the lgbt society and experience at representinglgbt issues on local and national levels. If elected my key aimswould be:

• Providing a voice for lgbt students• Influence decision making within the union.• Enhance the support services for lgbt students• Make the union more accessible for minority groups• Raising the profile of national NUS campaigns

I feel strongly against unjust discrimination that lgbt students stillface today in our education system and wider society, the fact thatwe still live in a country that has specific legislation against the lgbtcommunity.

Equality and diversity are fundamental to the student experience. We know that minority groupsface barriers getting into education and furthermore during their time here. I feel I would be ableto voice lgbt concerns and raise issues that affect us, helping provide a better environment foreveryone.

We need to push for stronger lgbt campaigning, stronger representation and better equality forall minority groups.

19

Sports OfficerLiam TwomeyAs a student who is actively involved in the university rugby team,I have a personal interest in the development of sport at UEL. At themoment we only have a handful of sports teams, who most peopledon’t even know about and until this election we have not even hada sports officer, a position I personally fought to create. What Iintend to do if you elect me to Sports Officer is:

1) Help promote sport within UEL, by liaising with theuniversity to move sport to the forefront.

2) Engage the sport’s governing bodies to encourage them toinvest in sports development at UEL.

3) Create a ‘school spirit’ and sports awareness, something which is non-existent atpresent.

4) Start the preparation for UEL’s involvement in 2012.

5) Campaign to increase sports funding.

Officer without PortfolioFrancesca BaileyWelcome to all students both old and new.

As an active student and a member of the African CaribbeanSocieties promotional team I have brought student concerns to theuniversity which they actively took on board and sanction thechange. Being able to understand the currant needs of UELstudents I work in fund raising, campaigns and events

. At present the Student Union is going through its own changeswhich I know I can help in making some positive input. If elected Iwill ensure that this new phase in the redevelopment of the uniondoes not conflict with the essence of the student movement.

Raise levels of participation in equality issues and student input.Promote an increase the levels of awareness to the different student unionsSupport all campaigns that are working on human rights issues.

The ExecutivePositions

R.O.N. stands for ‘Re-open Nominations’. This option allows student voters that didn’t prefer any of thecandidates running in this section of the student elections. The elections for this position would be re-run ifR.O.N. was sucessful in the election, allowing new students to apply, making potentially a wider choice.

As an active student I benefit from being able to understand thecurrant needs of UEL students and will guarantee their voices areheard at the very highest levels. At present the NUS is goingthrough its own political changes and I will if elected ensure thatthis new phase in the redevelopment of the union does not conflictwith the essence of the student movement.

Greater student input Raise levels of participation in equality issues.Promote an increase the levels of awareness to the differentstudent unionsCampaign for greater levels of representation for black and minorityethic students.Support all campaigns that are working on human rights issues.

Although we are in recession there is still room for a decrease in the costs it takes to be ahigher education student and strongly believe in the reduction of fees for working class families.

How 2 Vote !When casting your vote, please DO NOT place a ‘tick’ or a ‘cross’ in the box next to

candidates’ names. You must place a number in the allocated spaces next to thecandidates’ names indicating your order of preference for each candidate

or your vote will be counted as spoilt.

For example: If Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy were running in an election against each other

for UEL Cartoon Officer, and you preferred Mickey Mouse as your most preferredcandidate and Goofy as your second most preferred candidate,

then you would order them like this:Donald Duck ----—————————————- 3 Goofy —————————————————— 2Mickey Mouse -----————————————- 1R.O.N. --————————————————— 4

R.O.N. stands for ‘Re-open Nominations’. This option allows student voters that didn’tlike any of the candidates running in this section of the student elections to ask for the

elections for this position to be re-run again so the choice could be widened so new students could apply.

When voting, DO NOT mark the form other than your numbered preference for eachcandidate otherwise it will count as a spoilt vote. For example if you put a ‘1’ next to

Mickey Mouse and also put ‘that mouse is fly man!!’ next to that, your entire vote would be discounted.

Also when your are voting DO NOT take the voting form outside of the voting area, doing so could invalidate your vote as you are then susceptible to canvassers influencesduring the voting process which may be deemed unfair. Candidates and canvassers are

not allowed to enter the voting area (which will be marked around the ballot box).

Voting details are available on ‘www.uelsu.net’ and all SU receptions. Voting days are on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th March 2009,

with the count on Wednessday 25th March 2009. Participate in your union!
