Match backgroundA win at the fourth attempt in Group F has reignited Borussia Dortmund's belief that the qualifying berths are still withinreach but they face an exacting task at the home of Arsenal FC, who hold a one-point advantage at the head of thesection.

• Victory for Arsène Wenger's team would assure them of a place in the knockout rounds for the 12th successiveseason.

• The Gunners thought they were heading for an opening-day victory when Robin van Persie gave them the leadagainst the run of play at the BVB Stadion on matchday one. But Ivan Perišić had other ideas, dispatching a superblate volley to give Dortmund a 1-1 draw.

• Arsenal then beat Olympiacos FC 2-1 before giving their hopes of qualifying in first place a real boost with a 1-0 winaway to Olympique de Marseille. The return fixture in north London finished goalless.

• Dortmund's second outing in the competition produced a 3-0 defeat in France, followed by a 3-1 reverse away toOlympiacos. Their qualifying hopes were diminishing fast but a 1-0 home defeat of the Greek side has put them inbetter heart for the trip to England.

Previous meetings• These teams were also paired in the same UEFA Champions League section in the 2002/03 first group stage, thelast time Dortmund were involved. They went down 2-0 in north London but won 2-1 at home when Tomáš Rosický,now with Arsenal, scored both the German team's goals, the second a penalty. Sebastian Kehl also played forDortmund.

• Arsenal have won their last five home European games against German visitors and have recorded eight homevictories overall with just one defeat and one draw.

• Last season's Bundesliga champions have a habit of beating English opponents in important ties. They overcameLiverpool FC 2-1 in the 1966 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in Glasgow having removed West Ham United FC fromtheir path in the semi-finals with a 5-2 aggregate victory.

• Dortmund also knocked out Manchester United FC en route to 1996/97 UEFA Champions League glory, winningboth legs of their semi-final 1-0.

Match background• Including the victory over Udinese Calcio in the play-off round, the Gunners are unbeaten in 12 games in northLondon in the competition. In the group stage they had won eight in succession before the stalemate on matchdayfour and have now gone 25 home group games without defeat, 20 of which have resulted in victory. Their last reversecame on 17 September 2003 when FC Internazionale Milano won 3-0 at Highbury.

Team ties• Rosický played for Dortmund between 2000 and 2006, when he left for Arsenal, scoring 19 goals in 149 Bundesligagames.

• Dortmund's Mario Götze, Marcel Schmelzer and Sven Bender, and Arsenal's Per Mertesacker, were in the Germanyteam that shared a 2-2 friendly draw with Poland in Gdansk on 6 September. The home side included Arsenal'sWojciech Szczęsny, and Dortmund pair Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Błaszczykowski, who both scored.

• Götze and Mats Hummels were in the Germany side that recorded a 3-2 friendly victory against a Brazil teamincluding André Santos in Stuttgart on 10 August. Götze scored the home team's second goal.

• When Belgium faced Poland in an UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier in November 2006 in Brussels, Thomas Vermaelenplayed for the home team and Błaszczykowski for the visitors, who won 1-0.

• Błaszczykowski and Lewandowski were in the Polish team beaten 2-0 by Rosický's Czech Republic in a 2010 FIFAWorld Cup qualifier in Prague.

Head coachArsenal FC: Arsène WengerDate of birth: 22 October 1949Nationality: FrenchPlaying career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC StrasbourgCoaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS MonacoFC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC

• Not the most successful of players, Arsène Wenger has more than made up for that as a coach, turning Arsenalinto one of Europe's top teams.

• Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at Strasbourg and Cannes before Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of Monaco in 1987.

• Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Coach of the Year award. After reportedlyturning down France and FC Bayern München, he moved on to Japan and enjoyed tremendous success with NagoyaGrampus Eight.

• Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first non-Briton to win the Premier League in 1998,adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimedanother double in 2002, and in 2004 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten.

• Wenger nearly topped all his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only forFC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigatedby Wenger. Borussia Dortmund: Jürgen KloppDate of birth: 16 June 1967Nationality: GermanPlaying career: SV Glatten, TuS Ergenzingen, 1. FC Pforzheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Viktoria Sindlingen, Rot-WeissFrankfurt, 1. FSV Mainz 05Coaching career: 1. FSV Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund

• Having spent his early career in the lower leagues and failed to break into Eintracht's first team, Klopp turnedprofessional with Mainz, starting off a striker but becoming a no-nonsense defender. Never played in the top flightbut made 325 second-division appearances from 1990 to 2001, setting a club record, as well as scoring 52 goals.

• 'Kloppo', as he is known in Germany, was appointed Mainz's caretaker coach on 28 February 2001, helping the clubavoid relegation to the third tier.

• Duly won a permanent contract and over the next few years built Mainz into one of the strongest clubs in the 2.Bundesliga; narrowly missed out on promotion in 2002 and 2003, Mainz losing out to Eintracht by a single goal in thelatter campaign.

• Finally took Mainz into the top flight for the first time in 2004 and kept them in the Bundesliga until 2007, taking theminto the 2005/06 UEFA Cup via the UEFA Fair Play ranking – they lost to eventual winners Sevilla FC in the first round.
